Japanese blog Mac Otakara claims to have information from an Asian supplier that the next iPad will have a screen of the same physical dimensions as current iPads, and will support the Smart Cover but may be thicker.
According to Asian supplier which provides part for next iPad, next iPad has same size of screen, but case may be thicker by unknown reason. Current iPad cases, which covers backside, will not be compatible with thicker next iPad.

Also the source told, front rounding corner will be same with current iPad, then Smart Cover will be good companion with new iPad.
Though the site doesnt specify, the above image may be of prototype case for the iPad 3.

Mac Otakara has occasionally offered accurate information in the past, although several of its claims also failed to come true. Back in August, the site claimed that the iPhone 4S and iPad 3 would debut at a media event in early October with availability set for late October. iPad 3 rumors had been swirling at the time, but were later discounted as reported indicated that Apple will be pushing the iPad 3 with Retina display back to an early 2012 introduction.

Thicker is fine IMO. The iPad 2 is almost comically thin. If it is going to be thicker, it better be for a reason, though. Like a retina display or larger battery, LTE support, etc.

I wouldn't mind. There comes a point where products can be too thin to the point where you cannot comfortably hold them. I wouldn't mind if Apple sacrificed design for features. As long as it isn't an eyesore.

Nope. Just like every other iOS device release. It'll have underwhelming specs, aside from the one "revolutionary, unbelievable, legendary" feature that isn't really that new or exciting. And everyone will love it...

Also...

The iPad is getting thicker, and Leon is getting laaaaaaaaarger!

***NGH***

Not Going to Happen.

I don't think they will go for a thicker Ipad.

That rumour is old last rumours said it would be the same as the current model.

Jony Ive won't let this prototype out of the door. He never settle for thicker.

Do you want a Retina Display ?

You do ?!!?

Well think before you comment

Battery life is important. In fact it is more important then your fashion statement

Its thicker because they installed an air bag in case of a water landing there for it acts as a floatation device. The airlines paid Apple to do this. They are planning on charging you a carry on baggage fee because of the size change.

Oh yes, the iPad 2 had horrible specifications when it was released in March. 1GHz dual-core A5 chip, twice as much RAM as the original iPad, the addition of two cameras, etc.

Anyway, I don't think very many people would care if the next iPad were slightly thicker, as long as the feature set was worth it.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A405 Safari/7534.48.3)

I can't believe they didn't even mention LTE support. Of course it's going to be thicker, just like the LTE smartphones

I find nothing wrong with it being thicker as long as it means it'll be just as light and comfortable to hold..

I've got a Playbook now, and I love the flat surface, It's 0.9mm thick but easy to hold on to..

Looks like a case for the first iPad, especially with the lack of a camera hole.

When was the last time apple came out with anything that was bigger than its predecessor. Apple will never let a thicker product come to the light of day. Its possible that what we have been hearing about is a prototype that apple created to see how big they would have to make the iPad with the current technology on the market today(ie. retna display and LTE). Apple has never been one to compromise on appearance so why would they start now?

It's really hard for me to believe these rumors that the iPad 3 will be thicker. It's just so un-Apple like. I'd rather like to believe in this recent analyst report that Apple is going away from IPS for the next iPad in order to continue the trend of thinner.

This is what I want to see - how their marketing guys are supposed to market if it will be thicker :p

The iPhone 3G is larger then the original iPhone in 2 of 3 dimensions (the 3rd being the same).

Not going to get thicker. Tech gets smaller which means they can fit more in the case. They don't need to make it thicker.
