Do you honestly need to use an iPad at those locations?
I guess you're not a commuter.

I certainly don't need to be online every single nanosecond that I'm on Caltrain/BART/MUNI, but it's convenient to be able to get there some of the time. Right now, you don't have that option with a WiFi-only device.

Which is why you will see a boatload of notebook computers equipped with USB cellular modem dongles and quite a few iPads (and a bunch more people just diddling with their smartphones).

Of course, a lot of those folks with cellular 3G notebook modems probably have them paid for by their employer.

The fact of the matter is that local US transit agencies are way behind much of the rest of the industrialized world in providing accessible wireless networking.

While the rumored specs sound great, my fear is that Apple may have to substantially increase the price of the iPad 3 due to the cost of the components for the new tablet.

Between the cost of the 9.7" 2048x1536 touchscreen, quad-core A6 CPU/GPU, and needing more system RAM and dedicated video RAM, it would not surprise me at all that the iPad 3 for the low end 16 GB Wi-Fi version could be as high as US$619 to US$649. Small wonder there are rumors that Apple intended to keep iPad 2 production going, probably with the 16 and 32 GB Wi-Fi only versions.

I would have a hard time believing it would be thicker, but it's definitely more likely now than it would have been a few years ago. Steve Jobs would never have let a regression like that happen.

Actually you would be wrong about what Jobs would have let happen. IF it was as slight as this is alleged to be (2mm tops) and was truly necessary then yes it would met with even Jobs approval.

I do hope the quad core part is wrong. I'd rather see the new chip with A15 dual core, which should be blazing fast. It'll especially help with web loading speed and javascript performance, bringing the experience closer to PCs.

A quad-core chip based on Cortex A9 architecture would be faster than a dual-core chip based on A15 architecture. I highly doubt Apple will go ahead with A15 based design without extensively testing it first. I could be wrong though.

Ive just got the funds for an ipad 2.. do i buy now or wait..will it be March?

No one can really say if it will be March, April, next October or even in 3 weeks. So the way to answer the question might be to simply ask do you really need it right now. If you don't have some pressing need for an iPad right this moment for school, work etc then don't buy it. But if you do, then get it. You can always pass it on to a family member or sell it on craigslist or whatever to try to recover some of the cost. Or if you think you might get into app development you could always keep it as a testing unit.

A15 chips, from what the makers are promising, are blazing fast and likely to easily triumph the quadcore A9s for the most tasks even with just two cores, especially for the tasks we normally use iOS devices for, such as web browsing and games.

4G is a no brainer. For new iPad and new iPhone. Apple falls too obviously behind without it. Plus Verizon just said that they will not support new products that are NOT 4G, going forward. The speculation about 4G is finally going to end.

Oh yeah, Verizon will totally dictate Apple their terms, because that's how they got the iPhone on their network in the first place
The reality is, even if Apple decides not to include LTE in the next gen iPad or iPhone, Verizon will happily welcome these product to their network, and then brag about their sales.

At such a high resolution, shouldn't Apple consider to re-design iOS??? The grid pattern with huge icons was nice back in 2008 on a tiny iPhone screen. But today it's just ridiculous, claustrophic even.

There is far more space on the screen for a Mac-like dock. Once again, icons are way too big now, and the static background just makes me feel depressive. the UI isn't even using 1% of the iPad's GPU and CPU power. If Apple doesn't re-invent the UI, Microsoft will have easy game with Windows 8. It already has the #1 killer app: Office.

Get ready for a significant price increase :(

Actually, I wonder if Apple will continue to offer a model of the iPad 2 for a lower price, like they've done with the iPhone 4 and the AT&T iPhone 3GS. New iPads will fill in the current price model.

With all these Retina rumors it would hard to bet against it at this point

The Retina Display in the iPad rumors started the moment the display was announced for the iPhone. it didn't appear last year either (which prompted folks suggesting the whole iPad 2.5 in the fall which also never happened).

Apple is big on launching tech that others haven't and sometimes folks question the need for but this could be a time when they don't do that. If the parts are there in mass and quality then they won't push it. Or they might be looking at a slightly better quality display, supporting 1080p and such (say a 1200p display) but not a full on 'retina display'

Not buying the quad core rumor. The A15 SoC is just not ready (promised for early 2013), and Apple will not completely switch to Tegra after all the work they put in the A4/A5 chips.

Not going to happen people.

Its an A6 not Nvidia Tegra why would Apple even waste time with Nvidia? Or is it a different Tegra?

I thought the rumor was that the next gen chip will have 3D internal with 28mm manufacturing. Either way we all know Apple will blow the pants out of us when it happens just wonder if they will do it with a Steve Job like style or just here it is have a nice day.

That the rumors.:apple:

The one benefit of LTE is that I find it is faster than most public hotspots. I tend to keep the 4G signal going and just turn off wifi when I'm out of the home or office.

A15 is all speculation. The design doesn't even go into production until late this year with first product hitting in 2013.

I'd presume that the A15 would only be faster than a Quad A9 for applications that aren't multiprocessor aware beyond dual core processor. At a presume 20% speed advantage per clock the A15 would have to clock MUCH higher than a Quad Core A9 to best it in many circumstances.

This reminds me of C-Spire, which just got the iPhone. Before they got the iPhone, their main advertisements were about Android. Every billboard that they had in the area showed a picture of Android blasting through an Apple.

Now that they have the iPhone, most of their billboards talk about how well the iPhone is doing on their network. I don't even see any more Android ads/billboards anymore.

Well said, but as many members on this site tells us, more ram will decrease battery life.

That is true, although it is stand-by time that is hurt ... not run time. I'd be willing to give up a (small) bit of stand by time for a more useful device.

No interested until the web browsing is greatly enhanced. Browsing on iPad 1 and 2 has been horrible. Wiser to buy an Air and get access to the entire Internet.

Nah, it's going to be $499. Instead, 16GB sounds too small compared to the rest of the specs. 32GB should be the minimum. Heck, there are cheap 16GB USB memories that is cheaper than 4GB one only a couple years ago.

Yep, at this point I'm leaning more towards getting a device with the Windows 8 metro interface since it's light years ahead of iOS, which itself is incredibly out-dated. Hopefully a major revision is in the works.

Whatever iOS 6 will be, it'll be out before Windows 8.

And what do you mean by outdated?

Its age is a good thing for the number of apps, but what do you think are the downsides?
