I don't know anything technical about display resolutions, but how would 1080p or a 720p video look on a Retina Display?
Would it become pixelated at all?

No the pixels are much smaller on a higher PPI screen so if there is any pixelation from a resolution difference they are quite unnoticeable.

Having finally taken the iPad plunge this Christmas (received a 32GB iPad2 from my wife), my knee-jerk reaction here is to be bummed that a new one is here already. However, my brain tells me that its not gonna kill me to live with the iP2 for a while until something even cooler than the iP3 comes along. Gotta love the tech cycle.

Yup because even now I could see the iPad 4 being a barn burner with a couple of likely features.

Faster Wifi- 802.11ac

Faster ARM processor A15

Much faster Graphics- PowerVR Rogue

Better Battery- 15 hours?

The end is never in site lol

Whatever iOS 6 will be, it'll be out before Windows 8.

And what do you mean by outdated?

Its age is a good thing for the number of apps, but what do you think are the downsides?

First of all, from an aesthetic standpoint Metro looks more fresh & modern. iOS was modern-looking for its time but it's starting to show its age.

Social network integration in Windows Phone & Win8 is second to none. There's no need for separate apps. All your conversations be it SMS, Facebook, Linkdn can be accessed in the People's Hub.

Inter-app communication or file / data sharing between apps (Win8 Contracts feature) is head & shoulders better than iOS. I don't think iOS even has this right now.

Another thing is MS Office. One billion people worldwide still use this software. If you get a tablet running Win8 on X86 processor you can run prior versions of Office plus you can bet MS will develop a Metro version of Office. People who need to run Office and share documents with others that use Office will more than likely gravitate towards a Win8 tablet. It's not guaranteed but it's definitely a selling feature.

Granted there's Office for the Mac and there are rumors of Office coming to iOS but those are only rumors at this point.

Win7/Win8 Metro looks flashy but a bit too busy. I'm wondering if the basics could be shown to a computer neophyte within 10 minutes, getting them to the point where they are.

There will always be a portion of the tech populace that likes flashy, widgets and a degree of complexity but the products that cover the widest range of users is what is going to generate the most appeal.

I'd like to see Apple deliver a sandbox friendly way to have applications communicate. That's about the only thing that I care about Win7/Win8 at this point. Metro looks flashy but also a usability mess right now.

You guys who want more RAM, you need to consider that it takes battery life to preserve the RAM contents when the iPad is OFF. Below is a great article (from Microsoft!) explaining why portable devices with more RAM struggle to even come close to the iPad. The individual memory cells need to remain energized so the states of the various applications can be preserved. I really don't think Apple's being cheap here, I think they're (as usual) trying to create the best overall user experience.

This is true, although I'm not convinced doubling the memory to 1Gb would make much difference. The iPad2 doubled the RAM, and I don't think standby time decreased by much. Even if it does, the standby time on e iPad is so good, I'm okay with it decreasing a bit.

I personally think one reason Apple is stingy with RAM is to encourage developers to be efficient which helps older devices from becoming completely obsolete. I'm a developer, and I can confirm that most developers will use up as much resources as they can get away with.

until apple decides to reign in on freemium garbage that is overtaking the app store, I won't be buying anymore ipads.

Family plans might make cellular access more valuable on iPads

For those of you that say that there is no need for cellular access, I think that shared data plans may make them much more useful. Verizon is talking about plans that can be shared amongst devices and even amongst family members.

I was wondering if I needed cellular access on my next iPad, but if I could share a data plan between my iPad / iPhone and with my wife's devices, cellular access would be much more valuable to me personally.

I really hope apple bump the gfx chip considerably if the new retina screen is going to be 2048x1536 then its going to need some serious power

Retina display? Not a chance. I bet not until iPad 5 or 6. Why now when the competition hasn't closed the gap.
Sorry, there are a bunch of 720p media tablets from Apple's competitors. None of them have gained any traction, but to say that the competition hasn't closed the gap on hardware specifications is completely false.

Faster Wifi- 802.11ac

I have my doubts that the iPad will get 802.11ac wireless networking access anytime soon because 802.11n can already handle over 50 mbps data transfer rates rather easily, more than enough for HD video streaming even in near-uncompressed form. At my brother's house that has Comcast cable modem Internet, I was able to download apps and stream video at the 25 mbps PowerBoost initial and 15 mbps sustained over 802.11n with no problems.

".....but the products that cover the widest range of users is what is going to generate the most appeal. "

I agree with this. Right now in the tablet space that product is undoubtedly the iPad but a Windows 8 tablet / ultrabook running on an Intel-based processor could trump that for the simple reason that a user will be able to run all the legacy apps they currently rely on plus the new Metro-style apps. MS has also done a great job with the WinRT developer runtime for Metro apps. Any apps developed for Metro will run on a desktop, laptop, tablet unmodified. Only Windows Phone right now is not running on top of the Win8 architecture.

I'm also curious to know why you feel Metro is a usability mess. It's one of the best reviewed UI's Microsoft has had this decade (other than maybe Windows 7).

This will be my first iPad. Like you my iPhone 4S is grandfathered from my iPhone 3GS on AT&T. But I was going to go with Verizon for the iPad since they offer more GB in their plans. But now you got me worrying since I'm used to GSM on AT&T. I'll never go off GSM on an iPhone I like to have phone and Internet same time. But wouldn't have to worry about that with an iPad. Are the Verizon iPad a lot slower than the AT&T ?

When AT&T has good coverage and towers that are not overloaded it is about twice as fast. But I only really used the iPad data plan when traveling and 85% of the time I found myself in places where AT&T's lack of coverage (despite two or three bars on the iPad) meant I could not load a single web page in less than five minutes. I have never regretted getting a Verizon iPad. Also, getting 1GB for $20 is much better than 200mb for $15.
