Why the heck do we need a back camera on a tablet. I wish they realeased version with only front face camera with 2 or 3 magapixels and no camera at all in the back. I dont see the point taking photos with 10 inch big thingy. Espesially when we have good camera on iphone and photo stream.

I think this is going to be one of the biggest improvement from generation to another generation out of all iDevices! Can't wait to see what iPad 3 will actually offer!
Thanks Steve, for bringing us the most innovative device!
It's going to be pretty great. I only hope that the iPod touch will be updated this year, or perhaps alongside the iPad, with top notch hardware.

its neat to have the option... better to have a camera than having nothing.

iPad 3 is the one.
I'd like Apple could make the inners helium refillable, so that it will be lighter and also can float in the air.

Quad-core is not happening people, mark my words. You will have to wait for the iPad 3S for that.

Agreed ... and before someone down-votes you, I gave you a point.
Far too early for Retina, Quad-Core, LTE and RAM.

It all draws too much battery. I certainly go WiFi-only, I have tethering and GPS in my pocket...

128G would be nice, but I can live with 64...

Don't see how they can do a quad-core, retina display, bigger battery and an 8MP camera and still keep the price points the same. I'll believe it when I see it.

When you want to saturate market share, and have $96B in cash and liquidity you can do what you want for a predetermined period of time. Say, 1 year?Remember, it's Tim now.

Or, have the iPad 2 stay on at $349 for the 16g Wi-Fi.

It will be nice to have options. Not everyone needs or wants Retina. :apple:

Can't wait to see idiots using their iPad as a camera everywhere. 8 MP? Jesus. I doubt it but who knows.

On the other hand, they could look to be reading, and actually taking pictures of you? IMO, the camera on the taper is about taking pictures holding the iPad on your lap in a horizontal position. ;)

FaceTime with the grandparents and filming the kids, for example

Mmm oooh yeah...

  • 2048x1536 264 PPI IPS display
  • Quad-core Cortex A9 or A15
  • PowerVR SGX643MP1 or MP2
  • 1GB LPDDR3 RAM
  • 8MP rear camera, 1080p video, 3MP FaceTime camera

That's what I'm hoping for.

I'll better lower my expectations, otherwise I might be disappointed.
8MP camera would indeed be very useful for scanning documents.

But what's kind of underemphasized in this discussion is the RAM.
I really hope they don't save on the RAM.
I'd definitely be willing to pay more for 1GB of RAM, but it's not the most marketable feature nowadays.

(I was recently asked "the i7 still has GHz?" :D)

If these features turn out to be in the next iPad, we can't expect it to cost 499$ for the lower end, can we?

I have iPad 1, iPad 2, and probably getting iPad 3. I am also a photographer and the camera would be great to use when I don't have my dslr.

LOL WUT? The i7 still has GHz? LOL ROFL!

I'd pay for more RAM too, but it's likely not necessarily. Would be cool though, with 2GB RAM.
It's irrelevant what it looks like, it's just useful sometimes. You'd not hold it like that though  lol

How often does apple make a generation-leaping, revolutionary change in it's annual product upgrade?

Almost never.

Quad core, 8MP camera, retina display, LTE? Pick 1 of the 4. And next year pick another 1 of the 4. My best Guess is quad core this year. I will buy it anyway, and so will you.

My vote is that LTE will be on the iPad 4G next year. Catchy.

Haven't you been reading the news lately? Retina is happening. They have to upgrade the camera anyway, why not use the one that's already been developed for the 4S? Quad core, i agree, is probably coming next year, same with LTE.

The purported image of iPad 3 is questionale - especially with the apparently small size of the home button - i say its just some dodgy ps work

8MP + Retina + HD video is a recipe for 16GB = useless. Can't wait to see the storage sizes in the new iPad. 32GB for $499 would be welcome.

I'll better lower my expectations, otherwise I might be disappointed.

Very wise.

I think the rumors are getting too good for reality.
Yeah, retina screen is almost certain, better processor is a must and certain.
Everything else is pretty much a hope and assumption.

8MP camera, if quality, would put this device in another price bracket, I believe. Too much prime tech being packed into a $499 package?

If there is such a combination, it might be in the $699/$799 models or even a $899 model. If this thing came out with all that and 128GB storage, it'd be a kinda pro model which might be worth $899.

Seems like Apple is going all out on this iPad.
Retina display,
8mp camera
Quad core
and LTE?
Either the price will increase or I don't think we'll see ALL these upgrades in 1 generation.
Time will tell though :)

These things are why it's truly the one that matters. LTE, Retina, and an 8mp Camera are *massively huge* upgrades that make a big difference to say the least. The way I look at it, it's more like ipad1, iPad 1S, and the true iPad 2. ;)

Stylus

According to the Patently Apple site there were couple of patents filed by Apple pointing to a stylus device;

http://www.patentlyapple.com/patent...ge-steps-towards-a-graphics-pen-for-ipad.html

http://www.patentlyapple.com/patent...-docking-system-work-with-ordinary-paper.html

Now mind you, filing patents doesn't guarantee the product will come to fruition but at least you know they thought about it or may be working on it.

Love how the newspaper its being reported on is called: "Apple daily news", I remember I used to read that paper all the time in Hong Kong :D

Now ... to buy a iPad 3 or to be happy with the iPad Im using right now ... time will tell

Definitely also digging this RAM upgrade. Slightly worried they won't go all the way to 1GB, but with the resolution increase and all, I suppose it's called for.

1GB would make Safari tab killing a rarity, allow more open apps, scale proportionally with the new resolution, and open the hardware to more future software additions. The list essentially goes on and on, and I think the last point is especially important to the multitasking department. Fast app-switching or not, being able to use multiple apps on-screen at once is very essential in some situations, and every Windows 8 tablet will support it. Would also differentiate the iPad a bit more from iPhone/iPod Touch, using its extra screen estate for such a feature - and it really, really calls for some extra memory. Wouldn't hurt games either, of course.

I see it as a domino effect:

The display is the most expensive part and consensus is very clear Retina is a go.

If the iPad3 is going to continue to impress w/ it's non-laggy performance then it's going to need a lot more power HP to run the 2x resolution display and allow developers to write apps that can really show it off. Apple designs the iPad processors and Samsung fabricates them, so there is a huge cost savings right there compared.

Cameras are cheap and the iPad 2s 1MP camera is comedy or tragedy or both. It will be upgraded out of necessity. I'm dubious too about an 8MP, 4 or 5 seems more likely b/c it gives Apple more upgrade space in the future and leaves millions more $ in Apple's pocket. Most consumers are not going to fret over 4/5MP vs 8MP.

Battery life will not be improved, but a beefier proc and higher res screen will take it's toll on it. So Apple will equip the iPad3 with a battery that will give similar life as the iPad2: 8-10 hours.

It's rumored that Apple has ordered 65-70 million iPad 3s. That is a lot of pricing power. So I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility that Apple can keep parts cost down enough to maintain margins @ the current price points.

I really want an iPad 3. The new specs sounds awesome. And that retina display will be amazing when reading books and surfing the net.

But, what I want even more is a new redesigned MacBook Pro, a new 1080p enabled Apple TV and Mountain Lion.

2012 is going to be expensive, indeed.
