The ipad 1 still looks best in my opinion. I really don't like the looks of the ipad 2...

It's funny that people only think of taking photos or scanning documents when it comes to the back camera.

How about some kind of tour guide? You point the iPad at some building and it recognizes it (together with GPS and compass), giving you information about that building?

Or a routing device, where you lift your iPad and point in the direction you are walking, so the iPad can show your next exit in that small town with lots of tiny alleyways?

In both cases a better back camera would also help in analyzing the scene. It may not need to be 8MP, but from an economies of scale POV it would make less sense to stick with a lower spec cam if one is already using a higher spec cam on another device selling in the millions...

The could well be other use cases for an improved back cam I currently don't think of.

In both cases you dont really need a camera at all, since the device only needs your position and the direction in which you're looking to determine what you're (probably) looking at.

why are so many people expecting Apple to increase the price, this is not something Apple like to do, they recently like saying in their keynotes things like "and how much would this cost? 4 TIMES LESS THAN YOU EXPECTED!" *crowd cheers* or "how much are we going to charge for all these features? NOTHING!" *crowd cheers*.

They doubled the cores and RAM in the iPad 2 plus made it thinner, lighter and added cameras and lowered the price. with the iPhone 4, they gave it 4 times the amount of pixels, doubled the RAM, improved the processor and graphics, added an 8MP stills and HD video camera, and kept the price the same.

so whats to say they won't double the RAM, and the cores in the iPad 3 and give it a retina display for the same price?

If I see you taking a picture with a tablet, I will take that tablet and smash it. Taking pictures with tablets is the STUPIDEST thing in the world. "Hey look at that flower, let me pull out my tablet and take a picture!". Just wow....

Front cameras are a different story, but rear cameras.....just wow.

EDIT: Let the downvotes pour in.

Seems like Apple is going all out on this iPad.
Retina display,
8mp camera
Quad core
and LTE?
Either the price will increase or I don't think we'll see ALL these upgrades in 1 generation.
Time will tell though :)

Add a gig of RAM and that is one serious package!

Yeah after not upgrading the memory on the iPhone 4S, we better see it here. In the current state, the 512mb is working fine, but with a gig to play with

It'll probably be used to great effect for the OS and developers.

Still think a camera is too impractical for a device this size. Fair enough for a 7" tablet. 8MP 1080p camera would be pretty damn good though regardless. Perfect for youtube vids etc and streaming them to an updated AppleTV.

Agreed ... and before someone down-votes you, I gave you a point.
Far too early for Retina, Quad-Core, LTE and RAM.

It all draws too much battery. I certainly go WiFi-only, I have tethering and GPS in my pocket...

128G would be nice, but I can live with 64...
Why? The Sony Vita and Asus Transformer both have quadcore ARM based cpus.

Or maybe, just maybe, your sitting on the train watching some videos, then out of nowhere a fight breaks out between two people. You then quickly switch to your camera app and record the whole thing. Boom, police evidence, helping the community, etc. Not entirely stupid.

This is all hypothetical of course.

I get that that the iPad isn't the most ideal device for taking pictures but I think it would be great if there was also a flash added to accompany those 8MP.

When you want to saturate market share, and have $96B in cash and liquidity you can do what you want for a predetermined period of time. Say, 1 year?Remember, it's Tim now.

Or, have the iPad 2 stay on at $349 for the 16g Wi-Fi.

It will be nice to have options. Not everyone needs or wants Retina. :apple:

On the other hand, they could look to be reading, and actually taking pictures of you? IMO, the camera on the taper is about taking pictures holding the iPad on your lap in a horizontal position. ;)

Yes the camera on the back is perfect for taking pictures of people while you pretend you are reading. I just wish I could see the screen at the beach! :D

I glad to see them go with the 8MP camera from the iphone, makes sense when you throw in the retina display.

I'm having my doubts they can do all this at the same price point but as a "pro" version with 32GB storage I'd gladly pay $599.

but most people will probably pull out their cell phones, so you'll just look dumb standing there with a 10-inch tablet in your hands holding it out filming something.

I'm also entitled to my opinion.

Does this help answer the "will iPad 2 cases fit iPad 3?" threads?

Who cares how you look like while taking a picture with a tablet? Are you that self-conscious?

I'll be taking pictures with my iPad 3 and I won't give a damn what anyone else thinks.

I'm not self-conscious, I'm just saying if I see you taking pictures with a giant 10-inch square I am going to point and laugh, because it makes people look dumb.

I've noticed that Apple has never marketed the iPad to be a "picture taker". They've only mentioned FaceTime. I wonder if this time they will emphasize how good the camera is to take photos. If so, I sort of agree with you that the iPad doesn't really fit into the "photography" category considering its size.

I want to make my point clear that I do love the iPad and I really like having a front-facing camera, but a rear camera is just stupid in my opinion. I've never once used the rear camera on my iPad.

And taking pictures with a phone is not stupid? I could laugh at a lot of people every day who take pictures with a 3 megapixel smartphone camera while I take out my Lumix LX3, but I don't because it's their decision, you should not judge or laugh at them.

By the way, I think it would be interesting to film a video with the iPad, edit it directly on the device and upload it to YouTube. Still a dumb idea? I don't think so.

I'd love to see an iPad without any camera. It's just useless and another reason Apple can charge you more.

....and when the iPad 1 came out these very forums were filled with "where's the camera? Apple are trying to make higher profits by not including one".

Taking your logic one step further; do you really think Apple would go to the effort of sourcing parts and installing micro sized optics into their units so they can charge us more?

I think if anything it would much easier for them to leave it out.

Considering MOST phones today have pretty good cameras (Samsung Galaxy S II, iPhone 4S, etc.) that take really good photos, as well as being pocket-sized and really good replacements for point-and-shoot cameras, that's entirely different, but it's your opinion.

I've used an iPad to edit video, and it's really good, and if the iPad got a REALLY good camera that shoots REALLY good video (which it doesn't, and even the 4S is okay at the most), then it would be more practical as a video camera, but like I said, if I see you just waving a tablet in the air I'm going to think you look dumb.

I call BS..At least on the photos. I can't believe Apple would put a high end camera on the back, and not include a flash. Also, take a look at the position of the lens on the back. In the inset photo showing the 3 devices you can just see the edge of the plastic black bar for cellular service on the ip3. If u draw a line from the bottom edge of the black plastic over to the lense, it looks as if it would cross over the top 3rd of the lense. Now look at the position of the lense on the pic of the flat laying "ip3". It looks to be in a much different position. The entire lense looks much higher, where if u drew a line from the bottom edge of the black plastic it would almost go beneath the lense. Maybe just the angles, but I say Photoshopped.

Really a great point. I don't even feel the need to reply as it displays an outstanding and deep understanding of the market, so thank you for this brilliant lesson about MacRumors' forums.

As if "micro sized optics" of 1 MP were something new and expensive. It's something a lot of people consider an "important feature" and then only 5% actually uses.

In the end, I expect the iPad 3 (I'm way more tempted to call it iPad 2S) to include the following:

1. From the front, it looks essentially identical to the iPad 2.
2. From the rear, it has a re-positioned cellphone antenna and you can see the larger lens for a (most likely) the five megapixel camera sensor from the iPhone 4 (I think the iPhone 4S' sensor is too expensive for the new iPad).
3. It will be 1 to 1.5 mm thicker to accommodate the new display and larger battery pack.
4. Display is pretty much the 2048x1536 9.7" touchscreen, probably an IPS model.
5. CPU will be new "A6," probably with ARM architecture two Cortex A15 and two Cortex M4 cores.
6. Will have upgraded GPU unit.
7. Will have 1 GB RAM.
8. Storage capacity will be 32 and 64 GB.
9. Will support 802.11n Wi-Fi (maybe 2.4 and 5 GHz now?) and 3GPP LTE in data mode, thanks to new Qualcomm MDM9600 chipset.

Pricing will be US$599 for 32 GB Wi-Fi, US$649 for 32 GB Wi-Fi plus cellphone data, US$699 for 64 GB Wi-Fi, and US$749 for 64 GB Wi-Fi plus cellphone data.
