So I notice a lot of people are calling 3D a gimmick. But why so? 3D is meant for the realistic factor of seeing things with a depth of field rather than 2D.

3D still needs to be perfected especially with non glasses one but the tech world have to start somewhere.

I say give it time. Soon we can see things like 4K screens with good implementation of 3D.

I know that 3D is here to stay but thats a good thing. Let them perfect it and lets see where it can go.

Do you mean, even if it was as I suggested, passive 3D with Polarised glasses.

No funny screens, no flickering glasses.

Just looks exactly as normal, BUT if you bought a 3D game or 3D film and wore the passive 3D glasses, only then would you notice anything?

Anything that involves wearing any form of glasses is an absolute NO in my book.
How`s that supposed to work on a mobile device? It`s a total PITA in your living room never mind on the go...

Yeah, I know the 3DS doesn`t require glasses but the whole thing feels as much of a kludge now as it did 20 years ago.
I`d like to be proved wrong but so far 3D still sucks (imo).

Do you think this is the right path and if apple will implement it better than others?

I personally would like this because it would add the depth of field look to the screen giving it a more realistic looking icons that the Retina Display also gives.

Opinions?

Opinions? Well I'm blind in one eye so these faux 3D effects do nothing for me. Obviously not something I want in a device then.

Besides that, I have to ask: What problem, exactly, is "3D" supposed to solve, especially as its actually faux 3D?

I think 3D on an iDevice is going to be much different than on the movie screen. What I enjoy most about the new versions of 3D movies (as opposed to the old blue/red cardboard glasses 3D) is that not many things are flying at you. Instead, the screen feels, to me, as if it is a window to the action, and I am right there watching it. Everything is in focus, no matter where I look on the screen, and the depth is mimicked properly to make it feel "real".

That said, on an iDevice, I can imagine floating layers being the 3D effect in the UI. So the internet isn't in 3D... doesn't mean the browser can't be. The menus, anything that scrolls up and down can be graphically "lifted" just a bit from the background.

I think before 3D hits iPad, the screen resolution will have to get much better; iPad is still too pixely. I think iPhone and iPod Touch are ready for it now.

i have a 3ds, and feel that this is definitely the way going forward. the slider makes for a proper adjustment scheme that actually makes the experience pleasant.

Having said that, it probably will not jive nearly as well with something like an ipad. Assuming the technical feats necessary can be overcome within a few years, you're still left with what I would still argue is nothing more than crapware or elaborate flash games for 99 cents. Exceptions do exist, but not enough for me to consider my ipad as much more than a video player / web browser / irc / Fubar remote / what have you. it takes money to make proper experiences, and as long as you're playing angry birds or Fruit Ninja in 3d, the effect will be nothing more than a gimmick, just like the way HD resolutions did absolutely nothing to improve games.
