I seriously doubt it.

Why would they do this? If they did this, they would be cannibalizing their own desktop and laptop business.

The ipad may become "stand-alone"-esque (it already is) but, it'll never be a full-fledged stand-alone machine.

As mentioned numerous times before, it's a device for consuming, not creating.

Well, as the technology currently stands, it complements rather than cannibalizes other Apple product lines. Eventually we're going to see more of a blur between the product lines - and at a broader range of price points.

Apple has said time and time again they are willing to cannibalize their own products rather than lose to competitors in the future of computing. iPod's are dying because of iPhone and iPad and iPod's used to be a huge % of Apple's revenue. I think Steve and his team know that tablets are likely to cannibalize the PC market as they are the FUTURE of the PC, so better to be the leader than try to drag out the past for too long and lose in the long run (see Microsoft with their mobile strategy.)

I wondered how many people are being turned down by the iPad because it needed a computer to sync with... That would be an interesting stat to consider. The cloud based storage is interesting and for sure will be utilized by all iOS devices. And by then, it would be a killer feature for all iOS devices, not just the iPad.

Pure speculation, but I think there's a fair percentage of people who think "I already have a computer. Why do I need this thing?" those in addition to people who think "I need an iPad AND a computer? No thanks." Making iPad a truly stand alone device will be a revolutionary step.

But why is that an iPad 3 killer feature ? Seriously I want to know...

I know of two iPad first gen 'only' users that already do exactly what you say is 'the future'.... They have no computer to sync to at all, and have never owned one. They bought iPads as their first ever foray into internet, email etc...

All music and app's on their ipads has been bought via iTunes or App Store on the device. One set-up a gmail, the other bought a mobile me account.

So should I be jealous because they've got this killer iPad 3 feature already... errr no because anyone who chooses to can do the same. ;)

So I fail to see the point your making at all.

So, what will they do when Apple rolls out iOS 5? Is that gonna be available for download on the App Store as well? :p

My point is, like it or not, as it is right now, all iOS devices require a "real" computer. How often this interaction is required is another story.

re: iPad 3's Killer Feature

This is exactly what I'm hoping for!

I have (had) a Dell desktop which crashed in October. I do not need a full computer because I have a work laptop I can use but would like something at home other than my iPhone because the screen is too small. I have not bought a Mac because I just do not feel like spending all the money when I have a work issued laptop. Additionally, I really like the idea of the iPad! I don't need much more than that.

However, I have not bought an iPad yet because I would like all my iPhone's apps, iTunes etc. . to be the same across both devices and I cannot sync my iPhone and an iPad together. Otherwise I would have two separate of everything.

QUESTION. . . If the iPad were to become a stand alone dedvice would it then be possible, in your opinion, to sync the iPad and iPhone together?

I'm holding out as long as I can. You think this would this be an update for Spring 2012?
