Thinner, the A6, most likely a redesigned body, and definitely a new OS with one software feature that won't be enabled for previous models like a full Siri.

My opinion is that iOS 6 will allow for running apps side by side via split screen. The iPad 4 will have a new processor most likely to handle this. This will be the next big step in making iPad more of a replacement for the PC than ever before.
Ultimately I think the iPad will replace the notebook/desktop computer. Its just a matter of time. These things are just going to get faster and better in terms of what they can do.

Is what I would realistically speculate.
The improved performance characteristics will be wicked compared to the iPad 3rd generation.
I know sometimes people get crazy, but I actually enjoy reading "speculation" threads. Soon all the attention will shift over the iPhone forum and there will be a new "speculation" thread every 20 minutes.
It will likely be smaller and lighter overall due to
-die shrink for the processor. This will have the added bonus of being faster overall as well.
-more power efficiency so smaller battery
I'm going to bet they bump the rear camera to the same sensor in the 4S and maybe change the optics again to match whatever advancements there are in the 2012 iPhone.
The front camera will support FaceTime HD.
Capacity bumps across the board. 128GB will be the largest. Made possible by some extra room from the processor die shrink.
I'm hoping for a no compromise wireless network device. Meaning it will work on any of the cellular networks from just one hardware model. Traveling people can just choose Verizon or ATT LTE depending on which one suits them better in their current location.
Unrelated to the actual iPad launch but I foresee some cellular data cap bumps. I'd jump at $5 a GB PAYG. I don't see it getting that cheap for a while but I could definitely live with that.

They've done it again! Disappointed in the lack of holographic projection in this prognostication.

Agreed but knowing apple, whatever they will come up with in the future will make "the new ipad" (what a stupid name) seem sadly outdated.
It will take over 30 generations for iPad to catch up with screen technology as currently they are way behind. Hopefully by then they will exit the LCD platform. This is by the time I get old and grumpy.

You have a weird wish. Retina is a downgrade. Why do you like inferior viewing angles, has more color shift, and full of uneven tints? Oh and blurry smoothy images on video playback? Are you crazy?Nothing that I want.

I think it will use a display like this with much lower power consumption along with a better and more energy efficient CPU/GPU. I think the current CPU is a rather large 45nm...

They could then either reduce the size of the battery and have the iPad even thinner or keep the current battery and have spectacular battery life.

I'll bet a million dollars on this:
- Significantly less weight (current iPads are WAY too heavy)
- Dual-core processor
And that's it.
Maybe marginally longer battery life. Maybe fuller Siri integration. Maybe a different exterior design but it's hard to see where Apple can go with this bearing in mind an iPad is just a screen. I don't think we'll see much of a design change until Apple grows bored of aluminum (just like they got bored of candy colors, and then bored of white in the iMac/Macbook range). There's not yet any sign of that.

That's ridiculous. There is no use for such resolution. Even the 2048 x 1536 is a waste. I would concern about the display defects instead, like uneven tints, whites, backlight bleeds, pixel failure, all this needs to be elliminated.
Now this is a good post. Actually I had this in mind and brought to attention a long way back, too. Would be nice for a battery to last for the life of the device.

FWIW, I have had none of these issues. I totally love the screen. Everything I do on it is that much nicer for the retina screen.
i'm thinking the same thing. cant see a new form factor coming up, though maybe they'll launch a 7 inch model along with the standard size one. im predicting the standard faster processor and perhaps more ram upgrade, and siri, thats pretty much it. like some others i can see myself skipping the next gen... only reason i upgraded from the 2 was the screen, wouldnt be tempted by an even higher resolution one, i also dont think that will come in the next gen.
ony reason id be tempted to upgrade is if they brought a new form factor, which i cant see for the next gen, though definitely for the ipad 5.
I've heard it will contain a new version of AirPlay that actually allows YOU to enter the TV (provided it's an iTV or regular TV with Apple TV v.4) and interact with the people there.
But you'll need to jailbreak it to have sex with them.

Anyways, I do hope they incorporate a screen that can also scan files. Lay your document face down onto the screen and hit the Home Button and presto, it scans your document into an app that creates a digital file out of it. Wouldn't that be sweet!? I really don't think it is too far fetched these days.
I'd also love front facing stereo speakers, and a Micro SD slot for more storage. A centered 8 MP camera on the back would be sweet also.
