iPad 5 Estimated to Be 15% Thinner, 25% Lighter Than Current iPad

I never used the ambient light sensor; totally useless as far as I'm concerned. I'm not convinced "it's too thin" is the real reason for removing it anyway...probably more like "most people wouldn't miss it, so let's ditch it and save a bit of build cost". However the current iPod touch is pretty much the ideal thickess right now; I don't think I'd want it any thinner since it would start feeling cheap/uncomfortable.

But knowing Apple, the next gen touch probably will be.

Because an ambient light sensor is a make-or-break feature. Lol, complainers really love to expand their e-peens.

For someone going from dark environments to bright outdoor environments yes it is. Your beloved Apple can't figure out how to make quick settings adjustments to things like brightness, wifi, or Bluetooth available in the notification center or a shortcut on the springboard so it's really a pain in the ass. Stop sucking the Apple teet, you're allowed to complain when unnecessary form decisions override functionality in a device. No e-peen expanding here, I don't care about people's online perception is of me. I just don't want to be one of the guys here who obviously have Apple peen on my breath. It seems pretty common around here.

Go Apple! the only company that can pull off this extreme design and have the highest performing parts included!

Thinner's fine... Until they start sacrificing features - Like the 5th gen iPod Touch, which ditched the ambiant light sensor just so that it could be a bit thinner (because the 4th gen just wasn't thin enough).

Thinner iPod > Ambient light sensor IMO.

The 5th Gen iPod feels so, so nice to hold. I can't wait for iPhones to reach that point.

...Because it being 15% lighter is a make-or-break feature...

I think most people would prefer having the ambiant light sensor on the iPT than it being a tiny bit thinner. It actually gets to a point where the thinness of a device makes it uncomfortable to hold. I haven't owned a 5th iPT, but the 4th gen was far less comfortable to hold than the iPhone, because it was so thin.

actually in terms of iPad lighter is a big factor

Not sure how I feel about this new trend of Apple refreshing absolutely everything in the fall. Now, according to "rumors" we're expecting...

- OS 10.9
- iPad 5
- iPad mini refresh
- iPhone 5S
- Haswell MBPs
- Mac Pro?
- Mac mini?
- And maybe some kind of iWatch
- iRadio?

All for late summer/fall? Couldn't they spread it out a bit? It leads to looooong periods of silence out of Cupertino (such as now) which makes the media pounce and makes investors nervous. They'd be better off spreading things out, imo.

So, I was watching the Thatcher funeral footage and they showed a shot where you could see a guy taking photos with his full size iPad. Thing is, the bezel was thin like the iPad mini. Could it have been a prototype? Probably not. I just remember noticing it and thinking it strange. ;)

The battery life on the iPhone 5 is lacking, I rather have a thicker iPhone with a true all day battery life. Also, my iPhone 5 is harder to pick up from a flat surface cause of its thinness compared to the iPhone 4.

But I guess I can see it on the iPad. iPad is still uncomfortable to hold on while laying down.
Wow look at me complaining about not being able to do something while laying down. #firstworldproblems

Well I have no battery problems on my iPhone 5. The battery is amazing and lasts all day. But that's just my personal experience. Also, the size on the iphone 5 is perfect and the best engineered product I have ever held.

And if you're so unsatisfied with your products, why don't you just move on to another company? A company that can offer you a phone as thick as a brick, and that can offer you "real" battery life? :D

Not that thinner (too a point) and lighter (never a bad thing) are not good however battery live does appear to stay about the same though I wonder what it could be if they did not worry so much about making it thinner so often. Of course it did get thicker once and that not not standard.

It does seem like things need to change just for the sake of changing or people will talk about being bored, even if it has only been a couple years.

The iPad will not fit in my pants pocket. Slightly thinner will not change that. The current iPad fits well into my rucksack.

Apple tries again to sell minor changes are HUGE advantages.

But the S-Pen, or something similar, would make me consider.....

I wish that Apple would come out with something NEW, and not just refresh because it's time to refresh.

wtf, that's like saying "if you think in-n-out burgers are slightly small, then go eat at burger king".

obviously I still like the iPhone over any Android.

This is the new ipad 5. It's just been revealed. The guy is that good. Or he has scandalous photos of the entire apple board.

The guy is never wrong, and his predictions are entirely consistent with what Apple does. Their vision of the ipad and iphone are set. They will not change. No keyboard, no extra jacks or switches or whatever. It's always going to be a slab of glass with minimal anything else. So what you are left with is only thinner, lighter, stronger, better stamina. But nothing wildly new.

It's not only 'false full day battery life", it's more like a "half day battery life". :(

Slightly OT, but since we're talking about thinner & lighter...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-22191650

I really hope that it's sooner than later. The battery problem in the iPhone 5 (which some claim to be non-existent) is much more prominent than the 4S due to LTE and bigger screen with a battery with almost the same mAh. One of my co-worker always asked me for the iPhone 5 Lightning to USB cable (before she bought one at last) at the afternoon due to the battery ran flat every day within office hour. My girlfriend's iPhone 5 can have its battery level drop to 0% at around dinner time.

Mmm, 25% lighter sounds nice to me! That's quite a lot, I would be sorely tempted to upgrade from my 3 for that, although I do like the bezel.

What's with all this "stop just tweaking the design, add new features"? It's a computer, what new features are there to add? People don't complain about that fact that laptops don't get new "features" every year.

iPad mini Pro.

It's not only 'false full day battery life", it's more like a "half day battery life". :(

Mine lasts a day and a half easily, much more than my old 3GS which I used more sparingly than my light-moderate use on my 5. I'm perfectly happy with my 5's battery life - in as much as smartphone battery life, across the board and regardless of platform, is significantly less than the 9+ days an old dumbphone used to last, anyway. So, please stop quoting your individual experience as a universal fact. Because it's not.

With Whacking Day upon us, The Simpsons: Tapped Out is responsible for my iPhone lasting longer than my iPad.

Awesome! The current iPad is to heavy in my opinion. I also hope it ships with iOS 7. :D

So what's wrong with thinner? Oh wait, you're one of those people who constantly complain about Apple's every move and how they aren't innovating blah blah blah.
What's wrong with complaining about pointless "improvements?" Oh wait, you're one of those people who insists Apple can do no wrong blah blah blah.

Seriously, I'm sick and tired of all the reductions in size and weight. I guess it's cool from an engineering standpoint, but battery life stays the same, storage stays the same, price stays the same, available apps stay the same... meanwhile, the Mac Pro goes without any real updates for years, Thunderbolt is still going nowhere, and Apple is still failing to capitalize on the fact that Microsoft just HUGELY dropped the ball with Windows 8! This is a PERFECT time for Apple to take a bigger bite out of the PC market, even if it IS starting to shrink a bit, it'll obviously flatten out at some point.

Isn't the iPad what Tim Cook mostly uses?

Isn't the iPad what Tim Cook mostly uses when not using an iPhone? No wonder it's the iPad that is still crushing the competition both in quality and in sales.

Can't Wait Any Longer For 128GB Capacity

Although I have a 64GB AT&T LTE iPad 4, it just isn't enough room for me. I waited this past month for a Spring release. But now it seems obvious that it'll still be another 5-6 months before the A7X model ships. So I pulled the trigger on the 128GB A6X AT&T LTE iPad 4 today. I agree with those who like the wide top bottom in landscape mode. I'm really not looking forward to the narrower bezels. And while lighter and thinner will be nice and I'm happy to buy it on day one in the fall, meanwhile I just really need more capacity now. So like last year, I'll be buying two or perhaps even three (if the retina mini 2 appears) more iPads this year including the one I just ordered for a very good price.

I love my 64GB iPhone 5 and the only feature that would make me upgrade to the 5S would be if they offer it with 128GB capacity too. :)

After falling in love with the lightness of the Mini (making my iPad2 feel like a brick) I'm more than up for a thinner, lighter 10 inch iPad.

Not too sure on the loss of some of the bezel however as I do find it useful having something to grip on the larger tablet.

They had the same chance when Microsoft released Vista and blew it. Mac OS X was light years ahead at the time. It was around that period the Mac became the poor forgotten cousin of their shiny new iToys.

If they'd only release a half decent, well priced Intel based midi tower with the ability to replace RAM, Video Card and hard drive, they'd clean up. But it's the one thing they're never going to do. You either get a choice of a "disposable" all-in-one held together by glue, or a ludicrously overpriced mega-tower that hasn't had a decent upgrade for years.

In the meantime, people all over the world compensate by making hackintoshes, none of which Apple sees a penny for.

It's What's Inside That Counts

There's a massive difference between an A5X retina iPad 3 and an A6X retina iPad 4. And there will be another massive difference in an A7X iPad 5. There's nothing trivial about each generation's staggeringly faster CPU's and GPU's performance.
