Seriously, the new app sizes are crazy. There's really no place for 16 gb anymore.

I agree. I think 16GB as a whole should be done away with. I replied to a thread somewhat recently about 16GB being enough. I truly thought with iCloud it could be but when I tried to discipline myself using my 32GB 4S, I couldn't make it with 16GB. I don't even keep a ton of music on my iPhone either. I used to think the people who bitched about 32GB not being the base, but now I completely see it.

Yes. You are right. The time for 16 gb is clearly over. Apple should go 32/ 64/ 128 gb. Without going up with prices! (I know about 128 gb already existing.)

They won't. Not this year at least.

This year = redesign. Next year, it'll be size upgrades. I doubt Apple would do both at once. :/

Every single ipad generation except for the ipad 4 has had a redesign/size change though...

It better be. I'm going for 128GB and I really don't want to have to spend $799 next month.

Apple has been milking the 100 dollar storage size upgrades for years. 16GB is pretty low nowadays, it was okay a few years back, so a lot of folks need to pay 100 dollars more to get the larger ones.

I believe the actual cost of the chip is like 10-20 dollars more.

Not really. iPad 1 was pretty thick so they thinned it down with the iPad 2.

There are no design changes with the 3rd. It's just bigger because it has to be. It is not a new design nor advertised as one.

iPad 5 will be the only real design change since iPad 2 in 2011.

I don't think Apple can get away with such absurd price hikes this year. With Amazon putting out the kindle hdx with only $100 to go from 16gb to 64gb and other competing tablet makers doing the same thing, Apple will have to modify prices to compete.

The main reason people used to buy iPads over other tablets was quality and performance of IOS. Now that high quality tablets are being made by Amazon and Google, there is no way Apple can continue to rip off customers.

With refurbished iPad 4 128GBs selling for less than 699, maybe they are thinking of that! *cross fingers*.

I've been saying the same thing too.....
HOWEVER, the market is getting tight and Android is gaining market share. I could see Apple throwing down the gauntlet.

Imagine:
New form factor
Touch ID
A7 processor
2 gigs of ram
And 32 gb minimum

It would be a bold statement however unlikely it might be.

It would suck but I doubt any of us would purchase a Kindle or Android tablet because we had to pay an extra $100 for more storage. People who are going to buy an iPad are going to buy an iPad, and unfortunately, pay the extra money for more storage or deal with the lower amount.

I agree 16gb is tight but the storage upgrades do an excellent job of boosting margins. People said the new iPhone 5s would start at 32gb but it didn't for this reason of margin. Apple will continue with 16gb as the base model for as long as they possibly can. Probably at least another couple of years with 16gb as base.

I guess I'm not the only one who thinks that it's weird to have such a powerful processor and GPU on a 16GB device that can just install a few games on it.

i thought that the 16GB iPhone would be a thing of the past too. But Apple thought otherwise and I am guessing the 16GB iPad will remain as well.

If they're not selling they'll stop making them. If 16 doesn't suit you then don't buy it.

Not everyone's loading such games. Usage varies from person to person.

While the larger iPads did not sell as well as the mini, most people including myself would not spend more money to get more space on the larger one because of Apple's ridiculous pricing scheme.

I made my 1st gen 16GB iPad work all these years but I'm definitely going for 32GB this time around whether it's the base memory starting point or not.

Like others I'm not holding my breath for a new 32 GB minimum. Sure would be a nice surprise though but I'm guessing the iPad's will fall in line with the new iPhones

I also agree.

They could easily do this, but why would they? They are milking consumers and most people don't know any better.

More device memory SHOULD equate to folks buying more iCloud space to back up all that memory. I'm sure someone at Apple has that figured out.
