I made my 1st gen 16GB iPad work all these years but I'm definitely going for 32GB this time around whether it's the base memory starting point or not.

Like others I'm not holding my breath for a new 32 GB minimum. Sure would be a nice surprise though but I'm guessing the iPad's will fall in line with the new iPhones

And Apple is counting on people like you (and me, I'm in the same boat) to pay the ridiculous $100 premium for an $8 part.

It's like the 8 gig iPhone. Genius move by Apple. I got one for my daughter as her first phone. Now that she's 16 and is paying for upgrade herself, she opted for the 32 gig 5c. The extra space meant way more to her than the bells/whistles of the 5s.

I'd bet a significant percentage of people who originally bought a 16 gig iPad are planning on buying a bigger one for their next device because they don't like space for increasingly larger apps.

There's really no place for 16 gb anymore.

Your usage pattern is not everyone's usage pattern.

I use less than 10GB. Web browsing, e-book reader, Spotify, a handful of apps, and sharing vacation photos.

Maybe I'm using it wrong? :p

I just went from a 32GB iPhone to a 16GB iPhone because I realized that it is quite possible to survive without having weeks worth of music on me at all times.

Well considering one movie and one game these days can be 1.6-5 gigs, yes I say you are.

Apple will not drop the 16GB model. Why am I so sure? Because every other tablet competitor has one minus Microsoft and Apple doesn't view them as a threat. ;)

Doesn't matter. I hate how Apple overcharges $100 for each doubling of the RAM specs. The only difference in the iPad is the amount of RAM, but somehow that's worth an extra $100 in each increment.

You can hate it all you like. You can rant on a forum until your keyboard breaks. Apple will continue with that policy until people stop mindlessly queuing up for every new iThing and vote 'NO' with their wallets.

That truly is the only language Apple understands.

I'm a home theater nut. The mere thought of watching a movie on an iPad is against my religion! :p

Okay, so huge games? You get a few of the newer games and you can only store 2-5 of them.. And yes, tablet games (Esp. the tablet versions of phone games!) are crazy sized nowadays.

Oh, trust me, I'll be voting with my wallet for my next tablet purchase. And it won't be Apple, mostly due to iOS 7 unprofessional, child-like look. My money will go a place where doubling of RAM is only $50 and still a reasonable price. I've had it with Apple.

Whatever sells for them is what they'll make. I don't care if they make a 16GB or 32GB minimum, because I'm buying the maximum. If I were telling Apple what to do, I'd tell them to make a 256GB iPad, so I could buy one.

We can dream! Man that would be freaking killer if they had that size, wouldn't want to see the price tag though!

You make an excellent point. I've noticed some AAA games like the Real Racing and Infinity Blade series take up a lot of space. But then again it's my own personal preference to play top titles on the console or PC where the experience is much better. iPad gaming for me is very casual, with the types of games I might play for just a few minutes to half an hour before I go to sleep. Hunters 2, Strategery, PvZ do it for me. If I'm going to sit down for a game fest, off to the PC I go.

I'm not against 32GB iPad Mini being the base. I'll always take more space if it comes at the same price point!

Even the smaller, casual games are now really big though. It's been that way since retina graphics and it's only getting bigger.

I'd like that!

More device memory SHOULD equate to folks buying more iCloud space to back up all that memory. I'm sure someone at Apple has that figured out.
Not really because it doesn't actually back up apps, it just makes a list of them and downloads them later. The rest of the things to be backed up are all minor.

I don't think Apple can get away with such absurd price hikes this year. With Amazon putting out the kindle hdx with only $100 to go from 16gb to 64gb and other competing tablet makers doing the same thing, Apple will have to modify prices to compete.

The Kindle HDX has such a heavy skin on it, it can only barely be considered Android. OS navigation sucks, as the app selection is incredibly limited. Wanna waste $250 on it? Be my guest; but don't compare it to an iPad.

The main reason people used to buy iPads over other tablets was quality and performance of IOS. Now that high quality tablets are being made by Amazon and Google, there is no way Apple can continue to rip off customers.

The main reasons that people buy iPads continue to be because of quality and performance. Nothing has changed. Same goes for Android and Google devices- nothing's changed. Case in point- look how well the iPad mini has done, despite having a screen with less ppi than other Android devices -- for a whole year. The same goes for phones- there are so many Android phones on the market with bigger screens, more RAM, more cores, etc., but iPads and iPhones are selling more than ever. Why? Because they offer quality and performance. Is it really a rip off when customers are happy with their iPads?

I could see this happening. They are going to have to give a pretty big boost to Mini - retina display, a6x, possibly Touch ID.

The "large" iPad will need another differentiator to command the $499 price, give it 32GB at the base and it gets there.

I think it's well understood that apps are not backed up -- but I think to assume that the "rest of the things to be backed up are all minor" is not a good assumption for everyone. It may be true for you, but it's certainly not true for me.

On average, I would expect iCloud storage space requirements increase as device capacity increases. Whether the numbers work out such that Apple would be inclined to increase device capacities across the board is their calculation to make.

32GB as standard would be great, but I doubt it. Honestly though, even 16GB would be an upgrade, coming from my 8GB Nexus 7. :)

I had a 32GB iPad 3 with LTE and this time I will be going 16GB iPad 5 Wi-Fi (unless of course the minimum is 32).

More space is better, because you don't worry as much what you put on it. But I am no longer sure it is worth the premium. I typically use my iPhone for music/podcasts/and taking pics. So I can see how my iPhone could use one of the higher models.

But on the iPad, which mostly does some apps and web surfing, and primarily is used at home where I have a 50mbps connection anyway and can stream/download on demand anything, I don't see the need for more than the base model.

16GB makes it awkward to manage/upgrade apps, particularly given how big they're becoming.

For instance, I had Galaxy on Fire 2 HD (plus some of the paid add ons) installed, and was trying to upgrade the app. The total app size was a little over 1GB (I think) but even with 2.3GB free, iOS told me there was insufficient space. Even worse, the app was left in a "Waiting" state so I could no longer launch it either. I ended up having to delete it and install from scratch, thus losing all my progress.

Trying to keep 2+GB free is difficult when you've only about 13GB available on a 16GB device.

With 64-bit apps being larger in size, it really is time to increase the storage capacity.

Most of the size of apps is the graphics and media files, code takes up very little. It's not like they are going to double in size or anything. Probably just be an extra few megabytes per app.

Of course, I too would like as much storage as possible built into the iPad. That being said, many people will fill to near capacity based on what they have available, not necessarily what they need (ie - do you need to carry every song you own, 10 movies, etc.).

Anyhow, there is a pretty useful alternative. I recently bought a 32gb SanDisk Connect wireless flash drive. It was about $60 and works like a charm. It looks like a large USB flash drive, but with a click of a button becomes wifi enabled. Your iPad sees it as a separate network, and streaming videos works great.

I bought it recently for a road trip, and had 3 people streaming 3 different movies simultaneously in the car. Since my car has a USB adapter, I just left it plugged in, so battery life was a non factor (it is stated to last 4 hours).

The other advantage is that you don't have to load a single video multiple times onto multiple devices. And, you don't have to plug iOS devices into iTunes to sync. Just fill up the flash drive with a variety.

The device also accepts micro SD cards, so you can swap memory easily.

Very good value at $60.

Agreed totally. I dont use mine for much music other than Accu radio or iTunes radio. So, I dont need all that storage space. Same for TV shows or whatever - I stream them so they dont need to be locally stored.

More is usually deemed better when it comes to storage but $100 bucks extra per size upgrade is a big chunk of change and if you wont use that space its a waste, IMO.
