Won't happen. Fewer people would bump up to the next size (64GB) as they now do with 16GB being the entry. 16GB iPad is basically a placeholder to say "starts at $499." Apple would rather you buy the more profitable mid level model though. 32GB is livable so the incentive to bump up goes away for most.

I think it's well understood that apps are not backed up -- but I think to assume that the "rest of the things to be backed up are all minor" is not a good assumption for everyone. It may be true for you, but it's certainly not true for me.

On average, I would expect iCloud storage space requirements increase as device capacity increases. Whether the numbers work out such that Apple would be inclined to increase device capacities across the board is their calculation to make.
I don't usually speak so generally, but I'm certain this applies to everyone. Unless there's photos or videos involved, backups are just tiny. At best you'd hit 500MB per device.

They really might change the sizes this year on second thought.

If there are 3 colors, it'd be awfully a lot to do 4 sizes in each color + LTE/WiFi and WiFi only.

Big headache for Apple. Eliminating one size would be beneficial in this regard. Would change the possible iPad configurations from 24 to 18.

I'd love a 32gb model as a base (so I don't have to fork $100 extra) but I highly doubt it'll happen this year. It's a shame since the capacities have been the same for 4 generations already.

Oh, trust me, I'll be voting with my wallet for my next tablet purchase. And it won't be Apple, mostly due to iOS 7 unprofessional, child-like look. My money will go a place where doubling of RAM is only $50 and still a reasonable price. I've had it with Apple.

Yep - I've been a loyal Apple buyer for over 20 years, but there's a distasteful arrogance that creeps into their MO when they're on a roll. As more people come to realise this, sales may slump and maybe they'll pay more attention to the requests of their customers. It may never happen, but I too am getting fed up with Apple's apparent attitude that we should feel privileged to buy whatever products they want to sell to us, at whatever prices they want to charge.

I can't even begin to think how to reply to that, but it needed to be quoted. Just stunning!
How so? My logic is sound. Why quote that part without the rest of it?

The data backed up by iCloud, aside from Photos and Videos, is so tiny that you could barely use 500MB. There simply aren't apps available that leave large data files.

An increase in capacity of the device won't effect how much iCloud storage you need.

It's apparent that the extra $100 to double each capacity is where Apple increases its margins. The costs of all the other parts of the device are the same. An extra $200 to go from 16GB to 64GB is insane. I can get better prices at consumer retail prices. But it is what it is. An iPad is not worth $700 for 64GB of RAM. 128GB of storage perhaps.

But the Nexus 7 2013 is on my short list. It's the best tablet out there for that size. Why would I buy a 32GB iPad mini for $430, when I get this for $270 AND has a better than Retina display?

I still think it's crazy they started at 16gb again for the 5S.

With the iPad starting at 16gb would be even worse. I think every tablet (16gb and some 32gb) are equal or less money than a 16gb iPad. I know Apple doesn't have to compete on price, but I think they need to give the customers a bitter difference between iPad mini and iPad 5.

If mini gets retina screen and both stay at 16gb bases you're paying $170 for an increase in screen size and weight. I think 16gb base would most definitely hurt their larger, more profitable iPad sales.

16gb mini to 64gb mini this year again. 32gb to 128gb big iPad!

I hope so too and I think it makes sense for Apple to do that.

Apps are just getting bigger and bigger, 16GB is not a good user experience overall. User experience is what Apple care the most right? :D :apple:

I was pretty disgusted that the 5s didn't bump capacities. If work wasn't buying my phones, I would have an S4.

I think the 16 gb should remain in place.

Not everyone needs more than 16 gb of storage, and its a bit pointless to pay the higher price for the 32 gb version when you won't use even 16 gb of its storage.

A lot of iPad owners, chose the iPad for an easy way to allow them to surf, email, and not a lot else. A lot of older people are not interested in a laptop computer and find them difficult to use and a bit intimidating and choose the iPad for it's easier interface. So 16 gb is way more than enough for these people.

The whole idea here would be that it wouldn't raise the cost to consumers. While I may not need 32GB on my iPad (and will be opting for the lowest priced one when the 5 comes out) if my $499 gets me 32GB versus 16GB, I would not refuse the free space increase.

The cost to manufacture is maybe $5 or $10 different, so it is possible Apple would take a hit on their margins (or maybe use the savings from other improvements to offset the cost) and give us a higher starting capacity "free" of charge.

I have 16GB iPhone 4S and 64GB iPad1 - I'm waiting for iPad5 pricing and specs but will go for 32 or 64. I find 16 is fine for the phone but I keep more documents, emails and movies on the iPad and cannot rely on iCloud storage, hence the greater need.

As the new iPhones were 16GB I doubt it.

The iPods were 32GB and they later brought in a 16GB again due to price.

So I agree maybe for Ipad 6 but not ipad 5.

16GB's is just fine for a small cell phone because people really don't load them up. 32GB's should definitely be the minimum for a large tablet. I will be disappointed if it doesn't replace the 16GB model. It's a full size tablet that gets used for a lot more things than an iPhone does. It's the 5th generation of the device, and it's almost 2014. Time for an increase.

It all comes down to greed.

It would suck but I doubt any of us would purchase a Kindle or Android tablet because we had to pay an extra $100 for more storage. People who are going to buy an iPad are going to buy an iPad, and unfortunately, pay the extra money for more storage or deal with the lower amount.

Never say never.
