Yeah I mean at this point they should NOT have supported the Apple Pencil at all.
They get laughed at everywhere.

The decision to support Gen-1 instead of Gen-2 and to go for a USB-C port instead of the Lightning port required to charge the pencil seems like two teams at Apple who mis-communicated internally.
Apple Pencil 2 support would have required a workaround (such as connecting to the short side) since the moved the camera to landscape. Apple wasn't about to release a "Gen 1A" with a USB-C port, so they made the adapter. It's a bit kludgy but it works. Charging the Pencil directly from the iPad was itself a kludgy solution.

$120 yes. But as you can get the 9th gen for $269 that $180 price difference is more difficult to justify.
My thinking exactly, which is why I got the ninth. It does everything I need. The sixth generation I have is doing OK, but the battery is aging and a few things are bogging down. For real work I have actual computers with multiple I/O ports.

I feel like the 10th-gen iPad is not worth the money, either go with the 9th-gen and get what is very much an entry-level product, or go for the Air that is more expensive but a far more capable device.

The 10th-gen is an in-between product that makes no sense for the price it's set at - you pay for something that looks like the Air (with a cheaper display) but it won't get the latest features because it's still just an older A chip.

The iPad 10 would have been really good for a lot of people (Minus the stupid pencil 1 charging) if it was priced below £/$ 400.
The 10th gen is almost exactly what I was hoping for in the update (I don't use a pencil, so that whole fiasco wouldn't sway me), and I would have gladly surrendered my aging but still useful 7th gen for one, if the price was $379. I might even have given one a shot for $399. But they priced me out for sure. And it's not the price itself; I can buy any iPad I want at this moment. It's that my uses are so basic, it would be overkill for me to pay that for the Kindle app, browsing and YouTube videos.

Throw in the keyboard for free as a Black Friday deal, I'll reconsider 🤔

I'm considering getting an iPad (upgrading from . . no iPad) and seems like the 10th gen is really awkwardly placed between the 9th gen and the M1 Air. If I want basic and cheap, obviously go 9. If I want powerful and am willing to pay for it, the Air is a LOT better than the 10 (much faster, better screen, more capable, more accessories), and with the Air on sale for $519 at Amazon, it's a much smaller jump in price from 10 to Air than 9 to 10.

10 looks very nice but seems to give you the worst aspects of the other two and I'm confident I'd regret not just going higher or lower.

Correction: 9th Gen iPad is 10.2 ins. not 10.5.

A lot of mainstream buyers…
- will miss the home button.
- will miss the audio jack.
- will resent $170 (CAN) price increase for doing their basic stuff even if the 10th Gen has a notably 0.7 bigger screen and faster processor.
- won’t care squat about “newer” design.

For most mainstream buyers the 9th Gen is the better buy.

missing from the comparison is the cost of accessories. The smart cover ($50) and smart keyboard cover ($159) are only available for the 9th gen. Only folio cases ($80/$249) are available for the 10th gen.

Paying more for the 10th gen also includes paying more for Apple’s cases.
ever heard of third party accessories? doh!

For the difference, they could have at least upgraded the Apple Pencil compatibility.
yah, no changes, just faster, more ram, better cameras, bigger screen, thinner, lighter, double the neural engine, usb c. (faster speeds), better wifi, better bluetooth. Badly anything changed at all, oh wait, that is a pretty good list

Obviously I know that third party accessories exist. That is well known. But there are no 3rd party smart covers or smart keyboard covers for the 9th gen. And there are no 3rd party keyboard folios for the 10th gen. doh back atcha. We're literally talking about an Apples to Apples comparison.

And I'm talking specifically about smart covers for the 9th gen... not cases.

You forgot the iPad iOS version, the older model won't go past 17 or 18.

For most light users not having the latest OS won't matter.I suspect iPad users who want more powerful ones will upgrade before Apple stops supporting th elast OS there machine would run.

so if i need an ipad for travel, which would you all recommend? I had a 11 Pro a while ago.. wondering if I need all that for the price or the new 10th gen is fine??

What do you want it to be capable of doing on the road? Absent your use case the most truthful replay would be: An iPad...

I have a 12.9 Pro I sue as a second monitor; but that's overkill for when I use it for emails, web browsing, etc. It's great, however, for watching movies on a plane.

My iPad 4 still has about 7 hours of battery and works with YouTube and Netflix. Bit slow to go through menus and web surfing subject to constant tab reloads but given how little use it gets, I am still hesitant about forking out $$$ for a new one...

Told my uncle to buy the iPad 9 at Amazon for $269 instead. Almost $200 less than iPad 10!!
Nothing new there, I've been buying last year's best products for a long time now. They are still great and you save a lot. Buying this year's best products, you always pay a premium, no matter who the manufacturer is. My theory is if I bought it last year (or the year before) I would still be using it and it would probably still be good enough for me

This.

I have a 9th, it is great for basic stuff, and I still would recommend it for most people. Don‘t see anything compelling in the 10th. If you want a more sophisticated device, go for the Air or Pro.

At least in Europe the difference is much higher. Since my iPad 6th gen is already 4 years old and will eventually lose support I just decided to snag a brand new iPad 9th gen for €350 from a retailer that still had it with the old pricing and on sale (Apple is currently asking €450 for it). That’s €250 less than what Apple is asking for the 10th gen. At almost twice the price, it’s difficult to justify the 10th gen honestly.
