You have a smartcover, don't you?

Come on, this is getting silly now.
That's not what the stand functionality is for, people don't use to read books on a computer display for a reason.
Also I kinda may need to take a table with me if I want to use a Smart Cover stand at the park.

A table? Naw. Just a flat surface to stand it on.

The beauty of the Smart Cover, and hell, I'll even say the kickstand on the Surface Pro, is that it's there if you need it, but out of the way if you don't. The iPad is very quickly becoming a proper PC in its own right, something far more than a mere consumption device. All you have to do is take a quick glance through the app store, and you'll see tons upon tons of writing, drafting, and art apps. A good deal of which work better with the ipad standing upright, rather than in your hand.

So no, you won't need a stand if you're just sitting back on the couch, reading a book. But you will if you want to type up a document in Pages or Word.

Sorry, but it is you who is being silly. iPad's primary purpose is not as an e-reader. Therefore, you shouldn't apply such criteria to it. People who use it to watch videos, play games, do work, etc are all likely to have different visions of how they want their device to be to meet their needs. If you wanted a very good e-reader, you should have bought a Kindle.

Yes, I agree on that, but how is that relevant to the device's weight?

Me: I welcome lighter iPads because it's more comfortable to read on.
You: Get a stand and you don't have to hold it.
Me: Positioning my tablet as a Laptop sucks for reading.
You. Tablets are not optimized to read books.

Yeah, Smart Covers are cool. The iPad becoming a bit closer to a regular PC is cool too. I didn't say either weren't.
I think that you missed the point.

Very relevant, since you have clearly stated that the reason you would like for the next iPad to be lighter is so that it is easier to hold for prolonged periods of time, which reading fits squarely in. Specifically, your words were:
Yeah, try holding an iPad 3 for too long (reading a book or something) and you'll see why how comfortable it is and why weight and thickness matter.
