To me, it's a no brainer to at least wait until the Pro is released so you can compare them yourself IRL. I assume you don't require the device immediately if you're considering the Pro at all.

Why would you not consider the new MacBook? It is amazingly portable given what it can do.

You know it's pretty close to what I want but there are a few things that keep me away. For one it's far more expensive than an Air 2, although the iPad Pro isn't significantly cheaper by any means. 4G is a selling point for me as well, and the MacBook isn't much better for movies considering it's a 16:10 ratio so you're dealing with black bars either way. I also have concerns about the speed of the device, not that I need something that is blazing fast.

It's pretty fast actually. But yes, it does lack cellular which can be a major factor.

If you're not in a hurry, then I'd suggest you wait until it's officially launched then decide. It's also likely at that time that the iPad Air 2 might have dropped in price, so you have that extra benefit if you decide you don't want the iPad Pro after all.

I'm not in a huge rush but, I definitely have that new-toy bug that can make it hard to wait. ;)

I'm honestly super surprised Apple hasn't thrown cellular support into their laptops yet. It's something ThinkPads have had for years, and with how Apple pushes their devices as being superior for all things mobile you'd think it would have been at least an optional feature by now.

I can relate.

I want desperately to finally stop having to use my aging, bulky and heavy 2008 MBP. I was only considering a new Skylake powered MBP, then I realized I actually could do fine with 'just' a MacBook. Now, after using a basic 16Gb iPad Air 1 for awhile I realize maybe I don't even need a MacBook, but the iPad seems lacking even in comparison to my old laptop. So I'm really hoping to get something more than an Air 2 but less than a MacBook, something different to fill that in between spot. I'm hoping the iPad pro will fit right in there but I won't commit till I see one first hand. I may still end up with new MacBook after seeing what Skylake brings to it.

For me, i'm getting the iPad Pro. I've been with an iPad mini for a year or two now and i feel like even the regular iPad Air 2 screen wont be large enough. Before the keynote, i didn't think much of the iPad pro but now i feel like it would be perfect for taking notes in class or watching Netflix at home. And with the large amounts of storage(I'm getting 128 GB Cellular) ill be able to download a whole bunch of movies and watch those on the go.

You're not the only one. It looked great for taking notes in a class if the writing is close to regular writing speed and accuracy. But I have a year-old MacBook Air and a 2-year-old iPad Air, so it's hard to justify replacing the iPad. Maybe by the time I can get one they will start at 64GB since I know 32GB isn't enough on an iPad for me.

The option that came out last year to easily create a hotspot using your iPhone is better than any built-in cellular assuming you have an iPhone. I can easily get cellular access on my MacBook Air or iPad through my phone instead of spending an extra $129 each for hardware and then an extra $10 or so to connect that separate device to my cellular provider account. The last part is the most ridiculous part.

I'm curious about what you wrote here. When most people claim that they can't use an iPad in place of their Mac, their reason has to do with iOS vs. OS X rather than the power behind the hardware. You're saying that the iPad Air 1 can't replace your laptop because it seems to be lacking, and are waiting to see if the more powerful iPad Pro can be the computer replacement you're hoping for. Yet the iPad Pro will still run iOS. What aspect of the iPad Air 1 is holding you back compared with your 2008 MacBook Pro?

I don't know about you, but this screams MacBook 12" to me. Some people don't like the keyboard, but to me it's one of its best features. And you get 16:9 ratio and a full OS.

Why would you not consider the new MacBook? It is amazingly portable given what it can do.
love my macbook pro and i could never imagine the ipad pro replacing it

I just sold my iPad Air 2 in preparation for the iPad Pro. But now I'm just not sure so I'll give my thoughts.

iPad Air 2:
+ Power. This was an overpowered device last year and is still a powerhouse now
+ Price. Due to its "age" then price drops/sales are everywhere. You can score one for well below retail
+ Very light. Very portable.
- Lacks Pencil Support. Even if you don't need it now, if it takes off you may need it later
- Lacks Smart Keyboard Dock. Sure, the keyboard looks bad but that dock may be key for certain accessories
- Lacks 3D Touch. (I like parity between features so going from my 6S+ to non3D will be weird)

iPad Pro
+ Big screen/speakers = fantastic media consumption device (theoretically. it may also suck due to awkwardness)
- Price. Nobody is buying the 32GB so we're looking at a $950 machine with tons of limitations which is crazy
- Pencil/Keyboard are nice but way way way overpriced
- Apple seems unsure of its target market and is grasping at straws. (No, this is not a business machine)
- Apple has a history of adoration for "creatives" then immediately ignoring them (Mac Pro. FCP. Aperture etc)
- No kickstand. People made fun of it but the Surface Pro 3 kickstand makes it incredibly versatile
- Doesn't stand on its own. Pro doesn't belong in a case but if you want it to stand then you have no choice.
- Promise of specialized Apps rarely are fulfilled. (Remember the buzz around 6+ screen space that never got used)

iPad None (Skip this Generation and wait for Air3 or Pro2)
+ Next ten Air/Pro will have 3D Touch
+ Next gen Air/Pro will have much cheaper accessories (or even bundled pencils!)
+ Early adopters pay far more than subsequent generation buyers
+ Waiting means you have a chance to see what this product actually is meant for because right now its unclear
+ Next Gen Air/Pro will have just about everything that is missing from this years choices

Personally, I want a Pro because I no longer take my iPad out of the house anymore so going big makes sense. BUT... at $1000 then its just too expensive for a machine that seems to be "designed by committee". I'm not saying that any iPad should have a specific unitary task, but in this case (and until apps help define why we need it) then it really is "a big ass iPad".

Interested in purchasing an Air 2 64GB, but I am not showing these discounts you mentioned. Do you know where you saw these? Anywhere I can walk into and buy today? Or only online?

Hi Ledgem, that's a fair question and surprisingly to me I had to think about it for awhile. I don't know if I have a good answer to that. I use my laptop for the usual stuff, mail, web browsing, watching videos, Searches etc. The only apps I use are for playing and recording guitar. I can do all of that with the Air 1 (Unfortunately I had to find different iOS software for the guitar stuff). So why the 'need' for the Pro?

I honestly don't 'need' the iPP. But I do want to stop lugging around my old MBP, so why not just get a new lightweight MacBook? I may still do that. And I don't like the Air 1's small for my eyesight screen. What I like most about the iPP is after reading so many long posts about it I'm honestly starting to agree with the sentiment that it's not meant to be another iPad but instead the future of computing. I can't explain all of the technical stuff of it but not being a power user I don't think I need a Mac anymore and the Air 1 just seems so yesterday whereas the Pro is the future :)

I think the Pro is just the beginning and as it gains in popularity and features/capabilities it will become more and more apparent what impact it's going to create. I think developers are going to jump on it and consumers, once aware of it's potential and niche, will jump on it too.

So, ya, no really good reason I guess, just a feeling.

I'm just wondering if with the 4GB of RAM, will the pro have no keyboard lag in the Notes App? I use my iPad Air 2 for (Netflix) but notes more than anything. Before iOS 9 the keyboard was really lagging. Anyone know if increase of RAM and Processor power would help, or do you think it was an iOS problem? I haven't fully tested it out on the new iOS 9 so that's why I'm asking if anyone might think the RAM or OS was the issue.
I want the power in that pro, but the size is still holding me back from completely deciding to buy it. But if the RAM and processor will make "Notes" have no slow downs or issues I may jump in.

I have the Air2 and have never noticed any keyboard lag in any app, including Notes. Not in iOS 8 and surely not in iOS 9. Maybe you type faster than I do? lol.

Outdated how? It's still running a much faster processor and GPU than the Mini 4. If anything, the Mini 4 is a case of a product that's outdated before it shipped. I'm not really arguing that, but there's no way the Air 2 is outdated today. There's always the risk of feeling like you wish you'd waited when the next new thing comes along, but if you take that too seriously you'll never buy any tech device.

Outdated, my bad. Damn that auto correct

Remember that the iPad Air 2 is outdated now, it is great and will continue to be great for awhile but when the next one comes along you might be wishing you hadn't settled.
