Got a smart cover? Just peel it back and let it cover the under side of the Air 2 while holding it. You will basically not even feel the vibration with the volume cranked.

Oh wait. Now I'll read this adds additional weight to the Air 2.

Padding the back may work but you feel it on the glass also. Thanks for the suggestion. I'm waiting another year on the next release. I had the iPad 3 prior so the Air 1 is still a nice improvement.

Agreed it's the vibration on the glass that gets me the most.

The Samsung Galaxy S Tab is thin and light. Next time I go to Best Buy, I will try the sound on one of those just for comparison sake. I know you folks do not care about that device but I am curious.

You mean this one here next to my Air 2 ;)

This is the 8.4" version. Sound volume is very close to the Air 2, maybe a hair louder. No it does not vibrate, at all., perhaps the plastic chassis absorbs all the vibration :p It has a bit clearer but harsher sound than the Air 2. The Air 2 sounds fuller and warmer, even a tiny hint of bass. The Tab S definitely sounds better due to having stereo speakers separated.

If you play games on your Air 2, think of this as the vibration effect from your controller ;)

Watching Netflix on the Tab S screen is total eye candy., yes more so than the iPad. But I hate the physical buttons - drives me insane I have no where to hold it without keeping pressing the buttons accidentally.

I finally caved and went back to the Air 1. I'm someone who has never had a problem with an iPad before, be it screen issues, it getting too hot, etc. but the vibrating is just too much.

One thing I can add to the discussion to anyone trying the Air 2 in the store... it's one thing to feel it for 30secs, and another to hold it in your hand for 10-15mins. You set it down after that time and your hands are tingling.

We'll try again with Air 3... :(

I can agree with this 100%. After playing Real Racing 3 for 15 minutes, putting the iPad down, my right hand is tingling. Lasted about 30 seconds.

I like to hold mine in the landscape position and the speaker vibration is very annoying. In addition, I notice the sound becomes more muted when I put my hand underneath the ipad... as if my hand is dampening the sound a bit.

I came from Ipad 3 and this was never an issue. Perhaps Apple is making this thing too light for its own good.

I am returning mine back to the store tonight. Very disappointed in Apple.

I'm going to hold onto mine for a week. If I can overcome my dislike for it, I'll keep it. Otherwise, it goes back.

Maybe, maybe, and hopefully, it's a software thing that can be fixed with the bass levels. I dunno. I hope lol.

i'm not surprised. i have not seen a single thorough review yet.. most of them could have been written without ever using the device..

can't wait for the anandtech review.

it should be possible if you can put out the bass completely. There is actually a jailbreak tweak for that. I will report if it works or not.

Since mine's in a Fedex box at home I dropped by the Best Buy to see if I could notice the difference. It's true. It's much, much worse than the Air 1 and I was able to do a side by side test. It's somewhere 2-3x as noticeable by my reckoning.

Bad enough that I don't expect that I will keep my Air 2. This is a rather egregious flaw. The beauty of the iPad is that it was so unobtrusive. Just a screen floating quietly in the air. These vibrations truly ruin the experience.

People are not exaggerating. This is a really bad experience. Not to invoke Steve but this is one of the kind of details he would never have tolerated. It's to the point where I'm thinking of selling some or all of my Apple stock. iPad sales should tank on this kind of defect. Overreacting? Maybe. But I've owned the maxed out version of EVERY iPad since the beginning. And this one I don't want.

maybe i'm lucky and someone can compare it: does it vibrate more than an iphone5?

Is that backlight bleed in the lower left corner on the bottom device? :(

I was thinking that this wasn't going to be that big of a deal. I just unboxed it, put on a case and stuff. I didn't even want to think about and then all of a sudden when I launched a game, BAM. wow that is actually pretty strong vibration. This is with a smart case on there. I can see why people are complaining.

I just wanted to say that it's a lot stronger than some people are making it out to be. Whether or not it's a deal breaker, I don't know. I will hold out for a week before making my decision. I broke my ipad 2 a few months ago and this is my upgrade. Screen is great, everything is nice, that vibration sucks but I'll have to see how much it annoys me if I play games on it with any frequency.

I think some of the reviewers didn't mention this because they didn't do the thorough test or they don't want to lose their good standing with Apple and not be able to get next years devices.

Waymore than the iPhone 5.

Dealbreaker

I was so excited to get the Air 2 as my first iPad. I went to the Apple Store to check them out, and this is a real issue. I played a song from the music app and the bottom half (held in portrait mode) vibrated. The sound was distorted too because the sound is like a bunch of metal vibrating.

How could Apple not have realized this?!

I'm not sure now if I'm gonna get this or wait for the iPad Air 3 now. (I was gonna wait until Black Friday anyways)

I intend to use the iPad for a lot of Netflix/YouTube and sometimes music… so this is a big issue!

Otherwise the iPad is perfect.

I don't know how Apple could have missed this. I returned my iPad Air 2 today because Apple doesn't even acknowledge that there is a problem with the speaker vibration. I can't imagine using it for a long period of time while your fingers feel like they are getting electrical stimulation when the sound is turned on.

Considering how good the iPad and iPhone speakers are compared to other mobile speakers in their classes, they are well worth the vibrating for how bassy and full they sound. iPhone 5 sounds dead small next to the current line.

FINALLY.... Some vindication. I posted over and over again that I test-drove the iPad 2 and noticed the unacceptable vibration. But the Apple apologists here simply could not believe it was true.

It's a DESIGN FLAW. Much like everything else that flies out of Apple HQ these days, it wasn't properly tested/vetted.

The single speaker on the iPad 3 was located far off to the side, so it was easy to keep one's hands away from it. The iPad Air 2 (and I presume the iPad Air; similar to the iPad Mini) uses two speakers that are closer to the center of the device. Compared to the iPad 3, the speaker openings also cover more area If you're holding it in landscape mode, it is very easy to cover one of the speaker openings with your hand, which results in a very noticeable change in audio quality.

I came from an iPad 3, as well. The iPad Air 2's audio quality is far better than what the iPad 3 produced.

Regarding thinness, I'd agree with the sentiment that it would be nice if Apple stopped its obsession with making everything thinner. The iPad Air 2 is amazing to hold - I'm still marveling at its thinness and weight - but the iPad 3 never gave me trouble, even though it was heavily criticized for its weight. I'd certainly accept a fatter device that had better battery life, or some such thing.

But I'm surprised people are having numbness and tingling out of it. I cycle for fun and get hand numbness with the pressure and vibration from the handlebars sometimes. The iPad's vibration is nowhere near that. Just how hard are people gripping these things?

I admit I originally thought you were on a crazy rant but you're spot on.

I'm thinking of maybe getting a case to dampen it but the screen keyboard would always be an issue. I doubt I'll even unbox it.

How do I replicate?
