Apart from videos, video calls, or keyboard use what is so great about using iPad in landscape vs portrait?

The notch makes a lot of sense on the iPhone and Mac, which have a clear main orientation (specially the later). It wouldn’t work at all on the iPad, that doesn’t have a clear main one.
Also, there is pressure to reduce the bezel sizes on the phone and laptop, but on an iPad the Bezel is useful to provide a gripping area. I doubt there would be a notch on the iPads.

At last! I hope it comes with front cameras for both Portrait and Landscape.
Let’s see if I can payoff my AVP on time so I could get this new iPad. If not I’ll wait for next year’s model.

Do they know I have owned several iPads? I love my iPad Pro but it’s still a big iPhone. Apple could make iPads the next mini laptop but won’t.
You have owned several iPads and apparently still don’t know how to use it.
The iPad Pro is very far from just being a big iPhone. There’s so much I can do on mine that can’t do on the iPhone, not even a 15 Pro Max. If you look under the hood, you’ll see the difference.

Whatever they do you can be sure it’ll be awkward in some way and/or break interoperability/compatibility between devices and peripherals.

yes but 90% of cases with stands are designed to stand up the iPad in horizontal orientation. does anyone actually hold their iPad in their hands most of the time (except mini users).

Currently, the iPad Air and both iPad Pro models in Apple's lineup feature a FaceTime camera on the top of the device, which puts the camera off-center when taking a FaceTime call in landscape mode.
So where is the issue? I use the iPad in Portrait mode (which I prefer) for Facetime and in fact all the time. The iPad was designed as a Portrait first device.

Apple's own magic keyboard restricts the iPad to landscape mode, and four generations later, the camera is still situated for portrait mode...one might think after 3 years of WFH, the team would be acutely aware of the issue. No?
By about 2015, the persistent bugs and poor design elements convinced me that no one at Apple actually uses an iPad on a daily or even regular basis and has no idea how anyone does.

When the new base iPad launched with only gen 1 (USB-C) pencil support people kept saying that the reason the gen 2 pencil with magnetic charging wasn't supported was because the landscape camera got in the way of that charger. Maybe now those people will finally acknowledge that Apple can put the pencil charger on the top, like they always could have with the base iPad.
Or put it on the side?

It seems that most people who use their iPad for Zoom calls (and probably FaceTime) use it in landscape orientation and usually in a stand. That puts the camera in a weird and inconvenient location. That’s why Apple put the camera on the long side in the low end iPad and is expected to do so on the rest of the line.

It’s not clear that the iPad was designed to be portrait first. It was often demoed that way at first but that isn’t true now and they have always been able to be rotated and most the apps work better in that orientation.

Will be good to have the camera in landscape model. Waiting to see the new iPad Pro. Not so sure whether the change will be applicable to the Air

Default text size is small when surfing in portrait mode, especially on the 11".
I am browsing Macrumours now on my ipad in portrait mode. More vertical screen space, especially since some apps don’t scale well in landscape mode or make full use of all that horizontal screen estate.

Could be a nice quality of life improvement for Magic Keyboard users … but I really hope they also upgrade the FaceTime camera. My 2018 iPad Pro front video still looks way sharper/cleaner than the current Center Stage cam, even though it’s 5 years old by now.

Center Stage works well enough on desktops (or static laptop), but makes zero sense on a handheld device that is constantly moving around.

Whenever I FaceTime someone with a M1/M2 iPad it feels like I’m playing a seasickness simulator 😅. Not only is their image noticeably noisier, but the nonstop cropping/reframing is super distracting IMO. They should put these new AI neural processors to work in compensating eye position to overcome camera orientation. Much more useful that wobbly AI cropping.

Anyhow, maybe this a weird gripe?

Having OLED on the 11” pro is a very tempting upgrade though. Performance wise, everything still runs great on my 2018 model.

I think portrait is better: it reminds that the iPad is not a classic laptop, and I think using it in portrait with landscape camera feels way more awkward
Yeah have to agree.

my default WFH setup is a 16” MacBook Pro (left), ultrafine display (center) and iPad Pro w Magic Keyboard on the right with stands to align the displays at more or less eye level. I love using the iPad as a sort of dedicated video conferencing device for Teams/Zoom.

This makes the current camera position a non issue in landscape mode. And with Universal Control it feels like I’m operating some Minority Report sh*t 😁

When using ‘tablet mode’ makes sense keeping the camera in portrait orientation.

Stage-manager finally made portrait orientation useful to me since you now stack apps; split-screen was next to useless in portrait mode..
