I'd like to see in a the rMini. With 2GB of ram, and the A8, it should be pretty competent, and could be my first mini-tablet.

Touch ID seems a lot less useful on iPads than iPhones, as I suspect most people rarely if ever have theirs outside of their home. But what would make it a really kick-ass feature is multi-user switching, or at minimum the ability to auto-switch certain things like logged-in iCloud and Game Center IDs. That's something worth an upgrade.

I love touch ID, it I love just pressing the button and having my home screen pop up in a quarter second rather than having to swipe to unlock. passcode protection is just a bonus for me.

Kinda surprised it didn't happen earlier. Just need to lift the number of finger scans as an iPad is more likely to be used by a number of people.

It seems like the only stories that ever show up on the front page of MacRumors nowadays are those that either:

a) State the obvious ("iPad Air and Retina iPad Mini to Get Touch ID This Year")

or

b) Are absolutely preposterous ("Top End iWatch to Cost Several Thousand Dollars")

This. It would be neat to implement simple user profiles on an iPad (since it is often a shared device) and the integration with Touch ID to login and have your apps laid out how you want and have your profile signed in on services would be clutch. You would instantly be able to switch users just with the touch of a finger.

Touch ID is my favorite iPhone 5S feature and long overdue for the iPad line. As are profiles, esp. important on iPads, which tend to be shared far more than phones. Make it happen Jony Ive!

Do you use the passcode protection?

You still have to for certain things, like a restart (because you've shut down the iPhone or updated the iOS version).

Umm,, why didn't Apple update the ipad Air with touch id when the iPhone 5s came out?

Why wait i say...

If Apple can implement Touch ID to one oho e, then it should be a snap for other iOS device. Technology is already there, its done, what are u waiting for?

maybe too cramped but could have come out any time there after.

It better be iPad Air 2 instead. Adding a Touch ID while keep everything the same is a knee jerk move.

I have an iPad Air. I am not going to upgrade for those supposed rumored updates. I am happy with what I have.

Agreed. I don't want to get into a position where I buy a new iPad ever year. My iPad Air is perfect. I probably won't be buying a new one this year.

Can't believe these guys get called analysts and get paid for it. All they do is recycle each others rumours and state the obvious.

They did that when they introduced the lightning cable.

Well not really. If they can't bypass a regular passcode, then there's no difference since you need a backup passcode for Touch ID.

This years the year they kinda have to! With the A7 being bottlenecked by ram and the A8 having to have more power than the A7, it's sorta expected.

What if iOS 8 was far more optimised and less resource hungry? It wouldn't be such an issue then.

I do agree that in 2014 people should expect to see 2GB of RAM on a premium product though.

That's great and all, but I'm more interested in TouchID being added to Macs. Not having to always type passwords would be freaking amazing.

Yes, Apple does need to start adding some new features to the Macs and Touch ID would be a very welcome addition. I've had a fingerprint scanner on some of my laptops since around 2008 and really miss it on my Macs. It's so convenient to login/unlock a computer simply by swiping a finger. In Apple's case it would be even better as Touch ID is better technology than the old fingerprint scanners.

The iPad seems like such a simple and refined product that apart from making it thinner, lighter and faster, the biggest advances they can make at the moment would be with software. Hopefully iOS 8 delivers this :)

Not really. iPad 4th has A6x which was an improvement over A5x on iPad 3rd, beside the Lightning port. But yes, it was the shortest life cycle for an iPad.

What about the ram

More RAM would be much more important than Touch ID.

What if iOS 8 was far more optimised and less resource hungry?

UIWebView (on which also Safari is based) has been highly resource-hungry ever since the beginning. Apple have had 6+ years to fix it. They haven't fixed it. This means it's highly unlikely they will, at least not in the near future.

If Touch ID is indeed used this way, then, it'd be a great addition. To just make the device password unneeded (as is done on the 5S), not so - more of a gimmick on the less theft-prone iPad.

... and a much better-quality screen, instead of the current low-gamut one...

Exactly.
