Finally! I would have bought the iPad Air already if it had touch id. I want something new, not just another iPad that is a bit more powerful and slimmer.

So taking something already on the iPhone for a year and just sticking it on the iPad qualifies as new to you? And beyond that, what are the odds that by adding Touch ID, Safari will be snappier?

The lack of TouchID was the only reason I didn't purchase the Air. I guess they needed to hold something back for people to upgrade to iPad Air 2.

Why not 8 Gb ?

If this wasn't meant to be as sarcasm, then, for the same reasons I've explained above: Apple will never add windowed multitasking in their iPads so, unless you jailbreak and use the windowed multitasking tweaks (if they are ever released), 8GB would be absolutely unnecessary and an overkill. 2-3GB, on the other hand, would be more than welcome.

What has the ram to do with this thread ???

A lot of us would prefer 2-3GB of RAM in iPads for much more seamless, crash-less, app unloading-less functionality to, for a lot of us, useless (unless they're backed by true user switching) gimmicks like Touch ID.

----------

It's not a problem. They simply choose not to because the iPhone/iPad run smoothly with the current 1GB. No need to add cost in higher capacity RAM modules if its not necessary.

And despite the whining around here, its really not necessary. Has nothing to do with battery or "greed". The day the iPad/iPhone suffer due to lack of RAM we'll see Apple up the amount. May be soon - who knows. I use my devices for almost everything and my experience is every bit as good as it is with any other device that has more RAM.

"Whining" and the usual derogatory stuff... after reading your post (not having checked out the poster's name first - I always zoom in to the body of the text on my iPad for easier reading), after having read all your posts defending Apple in the forums, I guessed it was you wrote it. I was right.

Besideas, as usual, you're completely wrong. TONS of iPad users (in your parlance, "whiners") are (rightfully!) complaining about crashes. And that's because of the meager RAM. And, as I've proved many times, adding another 1 GB of RAM would have very little impact on the battery life of the iPad.

I have a feeling we’re going to see this sooner (WWDC/iOS preview?) than later (partially brought on by something mentioned by a “little bird” :D )

I believe there’s some logical business rationale to this as well: lack of device sharing/accounts is motivating some consumers to explore non-Apple products for a 2nd (or 3rd ...) device, and/or for first time, multiple device purchase ... and anything that has the potential to lead the consumer out of Apple as a single tech source, also means less chance for a lock-in to iTunes, followup purchases for additional iPads, iPhones, AppleTV, and Mac computers.

I guess it becomes a business decision of: does ease of iOS device sharing provide better customer retention and new customer traction vs. the potential for lost sales of multiple devices[?]

Personally, I’d love it, even if it was just for a few core services initially, where there could be discrete bookmarks/email/messages (something like this would likely, eventually have an SDK for “personal” vs. “shared” resources, maybe even cloud backed at some point where you could login and fetch remote configurations for accounts and whatnot).

I had iPad 1 and sold it after few months as I didn't have the use for it back then. It was mostly sitting on my shelf most of the time unless I travelled.
Since then a lot has changed so I got iPad Air when they released it but even when I was buying it I kinda wanted to have the TouchID as I see it as a big thing in the future (like multiaccounts etc.) so back then the 7.0 was so buggy etc. that I decided to return the iPad cause I saw no point to compromise on 2 things. 1) TouchID 2) experience.
I knew they would fix the iOS eventually but in that case I also knew that I will have to wait for it so why not wait for updated iPad that will have the TouchID which is what I wanted and the iOS will be ironed out by then. So, now I'm waiting.
This xmas will be expensive. Getting my iPad Air and iPhone 6 (upgrade from 4) :)))
On top of that I lust for a proper Apple display (retina) so I could give my eyes rest a bit more. The change is drastical and I hate normal screens now. The blurriness is immediately apparent once you go retina. Strange how quickly things change :)

It seems like the only stories that ever show up on the front page of MacRumors nowadays are those that either:

a) State the obvious ("iPad Air and Retina iPad Mini to Get Touch ID This Year")

or

b) Are absolutely preposterous ("Top End iWatch to Cost Several Thousand Dollars")

c) flappy bird news

So the A8 Chip will probably still be dual-core right, more efficient and slightly higher clock speed? What do you guys think?

Oh, my mistake. But it's still the same, when iPad 4th came up with 128 GB option nobody would think "Oh crap, iPad has 128GB, I should've waited and bought that" because it costs $100 more than 64GB so most people were more than happy to keep their current iPad.

But this article refers to "free" Touch ID upgrade which I suspect will be included in all iPads down to 16GB. Same A7 chip, same storage, same display, etc but the Touch ID. And most likely it will have the same price, in which case, I'd say F U Apple.

As you said, I can actually see that coming to fruition . And they will still sell heaps .

I would like to see 3GB ram added and would be disappointed if it was just bumped to 2.

I'm not sure the safari tab issue is really a ram issue. I would like them to have that corrected. I will be looking forward to review sites indicating this before purchasing.

I would also like the issue with the extremely thin glass improved. I'm not an engineer, so that's all I have to say about that.

Continuation of white/silver color.

Cheaper price for 32GB storage would be welcomed :)

Lower heat and good battery would be good trade off.
Intel made an 80 core processor 7 years ago.

optional?

Probably a silly question given Apple's track record, but does anybody think this will be an optional feature? I would love to get the next upgrade if it has a better camera and other specs, but given the recent allegations of tech companies and the NSA, I think I'd rather keep my finger prints to myself. I know they say it is only stored as data on the machine, but I'd rather not even take the chance. Justified or not, whether or not I can opt out of the TouchID will determine which iPad I purchase. Any thoughts?

Thanks for your response.

Did someone install more RAM in the ipad to come to this conclusion?

I wish it was possible - as was back in the Pocket PC / Windows Mobile days (see for example the 128MB mods of the HTC Universal or the various Compaq / HP iPaq's.) Regrettably, there isn't any kind of (aftermarket) RAM upgrade services for iDevices.

I would be interested in reading any source articles to back this up.

I've published a lot of articles / benchmarks on the memory usage of Safari / UIWebView; see for example https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/18502038/

In a nutshell, Safari (UIWebView) is VERY RAM memory-hungry and adding another Gigabyte of RAM would seriously extend its stability / tab reloading-less-ness.
