I'm in the EU so I expect to be helped by Apple. I don't think breaking randomly without trauma is satisfactory or for that matter minor trauma such as small knocks. It'd be like having a shirt that tore like paper - wouldn't be allowed.

C'mon dude... physics.

i bet you are one of the iPhone 4/4s are superior because it feels more solid people too right?
Just because something is lighter doesn't make it less high end... do you like sports cars heavy or light? Not that its the same thing but its similar. Im all for the lightening of devices and it has kept the same feel with the aluminum. To me something that is thinner easier to carry and lighter is more high end but who's asking me?
I like the charcoal black more than the darker black personally also. Now if they could figure out a better way to make the black coating or anodizing stronger so it doesn't chip on the edge as easily i might pick the darker black. Still definitely a preference as far as color.

Design wise? yeah man totally.. how many threads of 'my iPhone 5 bent in my jean pocket' threads do you need to see?

Apple made a special stainless steel alloy for the iPhone 4 - watch the iPhone 4 intro video. they replaced it with the softer, more readily available aluminium. To me, that's a downgrade.

I use an iPhone 5 - skipped the 5s. I never use a case on my phones. the edges are all screwed up (i have a black one). Also, I don't know if its just my eyes playing tricks on me, but i swear if i place it on a flat surface, it doesnt sit completely flat anymore.
my black iPhone 4s that i have, that i no longer use, sure there are scratches - the back glass even has a crack. but the stainless steel band? pretty much pristine.

I'm not saying it's a better phone, but yeah it is a more solid industrial design.

Sorry but I'm just not buying the story of "I just held it in my hand and it cracked". Unless it was already defective that's just not possible unless it was in some extreme heat or cold conditions or something out of the norm. I have an iPad Air and it's pretty resilient.

Not sure I believe the screen breaking without any hits whatsoever......

But I just went from a ipad3 to an Air. Still have the 3. And the 3 feels so much more solidly built. At elast from the screen perspective.

I ordered the bodyguardz pure glass screen protector for the air but for the couple days I was using the Air before I got the glass screen protector, the flimsy feeling of the screen on the air was pissing me off.

I like the thinner, lighter formfactor. But no one can tell me the screen feels as solid on the Air as it does on the previous generations. At least the 3 and back. I never used a 4 so I dont know if it had the same screen as my 3 or closer to the Air.

i had the 3 and still have the 4 and I have the air and the non-retina mini as well.
i agree with the above

If you are sitting on a 800$ device, well, it's your fault.
Aluminum is lighter than steel, and surely isn't a downgrade.
iPhone 5/5s are better than 4/4s in any way.

Nothing to do with iPads but well known that a glass panel can just shatter with no one near it over here in the UK plumbing world.

A shower screen or enclosure can just explode for no reason, and as far as I am aware the cause is it has received a knock during manufacture and this causes a stress fault that can take a while to show but then it just goes bang and goes

Explode? No. Fall apart? maybe. I'd think you'd hear about this happening a heck of a lot more often considering how much glass humans use.

People love to use the word explode incorrectly when dealing with Apple products.

t'thinner and lighter' isnt always better.
If they made the iphone 5s in an iphone 4 body with the bigger screen id be all over that

If anyone is curious I got my replacement back and there's no gaps that might induce cracks, everything looks good.

When you are speaking about a PORTABLE device, thinner and lighter is definitely always better

Email tcook@apple.com and complain detailing precisely what happened and the links to the Apple Support forums. Include a picture.

I have had an issue resolved the next day by emailing that address (I am also in the UK).

I would tend to believe the OP - my iPad Air feels hollow inside and the centre of the screen flexes - a lot. If there is many a discussion about it on the support forums then this is obviously an issue affecting people.

The screen flexes? I haven't noticed such a thing happening. I've handled three Airs -- mine, my partner's and my mom's. None of the screens have any flex. I do agree it feels a bit more "hollow" than previous iPads, but flexing, no way.

Three pages, no pics. Just someone complaining up a storm about how a company that deals in high-end tech doesn't believe a story about a spontaneous crack with no outside source. Perhaps laws of nature simply don't apply to this iPad Air. Apple has called the iPad "magical" after all.

Learn some physics. It might help you construct a better lie to actually get the repair for free, since that seems to be an option in your morality code.

I stopped believing this story when someone wrote that their iPad Air just cracked from holding it. I call BS on that.

It's just common sense. Glass can crack, sure. But not without some cause. Mass temperature changes, pressure, or impact are all common.

But apparently so are people that think if they tell the same lie enough it'll be true. "It just spontaneously broke for no reason and I definitely didn't cause it, so can you fix it for free??"

It is possible that the screen can appear to mysteriously shatter without being dropped. If the edges of the aluminum case are not even, for example, the raised portions can apply pressure to the glass and cause problems later down the road. Usually, fluctuations in temperature or applying pressure to one portion of the screen in addition to the manufacturing issue can cause it to shatter completely. There are similar reported cases of the cellular plastic cover on the back of the iPad cracking for no apparent reason. These are stress cracks that could be caused by defects in machining the case or if the iPad was not assembled correctly. So, there could be areas under the screen that could be putting pressure on the glass that would not normally be visible from the outside of the device. Stop accusing the OP of making this up since he/she didn't post pictures.

I agree with this explanation. Those that have dismissed this as BS are just ignorant of the potential engineering issue that can happen.

Don't be pressing hard on your ipad screen and complaining about it cracking. There is no reason ever to press hard on it unless u just like to abuse ur stuff which some do.

I love the apple thinner and lighter philosophy. A lot of people are careful with their stuff, don't treat an expensive gadget like a toy, don't look for dust and lighting problems where there are not any like many of these kooks.......I'm glad I missed the iPhone 4 and ipad 3 and earlier......I don't like the ugly connector and moreover the products themselves ,while historic in their own way and special to many no doubt ......are just ugly and bulky compared to the 5 and air.

No they're not... They are just backing Apple regardless of all other factors like they do in every other thread they participate in.

This thread scares me. My iPad Air is my first iPad and I absolutely love it. The thought of the screen cracking/shattering spontaneously really scares me. I understand that there are bound to be some units with manufacturing defects, I just pray I don't have one of them! I've only had mine for a week....

Pressing hard isn't the only way the screen can crack in the presence of manufacturing defects. Given a device with manufacturing defects, fluctuations in temperature can cause the glass to expand and contract, and thus cause the glass to crack even if you don't use it.

If yours hasn't cracked out of the box it's not going to. Don't listen to the ridiculousness.

Those are extreme conditions and therefore not normal circumstances and can happen with anything even without manufacturing defects. Under those conditions it does not qualify the iPad Air as being susceptible to cracking easily.
