I gotta say results are very disappointing. I thought Apple was known for its build quality. Apple has downgraded quality over higher margins and the results of this test show that the iPad is no better than its cheap crappy plastic Android competition. The hollow front really just gave me a headache.

PS. If you want to see quality build check out iPhone 5s droptest. Amazing results on that.
 
I was not going to get AC+ this time. I have to.

Sad about the hollow part. iPad air is a iPad mini with slightly bigger screen.
 
Why is it that some people cannot comprehend the difference between build quality and durability?

Um, yeah. Who thought it wasn't? Oh and I know plenty of people who dropped their iPhone 4's and had broken glass. Was the iPhone 4 build quality crap too?
 
Don't drop it. It's like, what would you expect from dropping a piece of glass glued to a sheet of aluminum? :)

I suppose the glass could be more durable though.
 
To people complaining the iPad isn't more durable. That is like buying an expensive super car then complaining it doesn't just bounce off the pole you just wrapped it around. If you drop your iPad, expect a dent, crack or other type of damage to the device. Plain and simple!

Did you want them to fill it with something if they didn't need to, thus increasing weight? The whole point of the air was to reduce weight and overall size.

While I suppose they could have added some corrugated aluminum, it would have still added weight, and probably have done nothing for preventing screen cracking.

BTW: how do these kids afford to do these drop tests? Do they just insure the product, and expect video ad sales to make up the difference in the deductible they pay?
 
The iPads for what they are and do are quite durable. Then again, drop a good laptop when it is open and see what happens. I guess the answer is that all "thin" computers should be disappointing to the original poster along with all tablets and smart phones and so forth.

iPads like other similar technologies require care and ideally one gets a cover/protection for them.

If you think more robust build is required, skip the ipad and get yourself a Panasonic Toughbook laptop. - Built like a tank with a screen that is insulated with gel/silicon to handle shock and a suspended motherboard.
 
The reason for the "hollow part" is for cellular and gps antennas. It's been this way since at least the ipad 2. Every wifi only ipad has empty space above the screen. Cellular models have antennas there.

I dropped my iphone 4 and it shattered. Disgusting.

I mean really? Grab any tablet or phone and drop it on those rocks and the glass will shatter. Maybe not as much as the air just did but still. It's 9.7" just don't drop it!!!

Yes, a nearly 10" piece of glass will break if you drop it. This is why Apple offers an "out of warranty" flat repair (replacement, really) which is significantly less than the cost of a new device. And why they offer AppleCare Plus.

On a side note, didn't MacRumors post the reason for the air gap on the iPad Air is because of the new low-power IGZO screen technology? Pretty sure I read that somewhere. Apple wouldn't have designed it that way if they could have avoided it. Hell, the made the iMac really hard to manufacture by having the LCD laminated to the glass. You think they wouldn't do it for the iPad of the could?
 
So other pads dropped on concrete from nearly five feet will not break? What about older model Ipads?

Yeah, if you drop an iPad from chest height, onto concrete, directly on a corner, it'll shatter.

What I'd like to see is more common types of drops. Off of a kitchen counter onto linoleum, etc. Most drop tests at least ramp up from things like a 1 foot drop onwards.

Mass. Also, they tend to start out less severe.

These guys fail at drop testing.

what do you expect with a full glass front screen of 10"?

who would drop their iPad from that high anyway? usually when you hold one its around your stomach. not your face.

Of course after a glass screen is cracked if you drop it again it will splinter even if it doesn't touch the glass because of pressure.

I Don't know what you expect the outcome to be... don't drop it...
 
This is my favorite. Guy throws Apple under the bus about lack of innovation and pricing then drops the Air on dirt. There is a convenient cut away before he picks it up and presto it's damaged. Always trust a guy firing a high powered BB gun at an metal electronic. Maybe one of those ricochet caused brain damage.

It's funny because I can hear the hollow areas when I tap on the screen. Not a complaint just an observation.

The problem is that the vertical bezels are large, yet there is nothing in there. I'm guessing the ipad 5 will have "drastically reduced bezels that never before was possible."
 
ipads and iphones

I put a case on all my gear because I take care of all my stuff. It is for use, not show. I want to be able to hand it down in a year, and have it still in the same condition as it was when I bought it.

You do realize it's a tablet right..... why would you expect it to hold up in a drop test? Put a huge otterbox style case on yours if you'd like it to be able to survive such a drop.

If you can't take care of your expensive things then yeah, you need AC+.
