I gotta say results are very disappointing. I thought Apple was known for its build quality. Apple has downgraded quality over higher margins and the results of this test show that the iPad is no better than its cheap crappy plastic Android competition. The hollow front really just gave me a headache.

PS. If you want to see quality build check out iPhone 5s droptest. Amazing results on that.

Drop Surface and check ...

I saw a Ferrari 458 Italia go over a cliff off Mulholland drive. It did not turn out well. Ferrari is ripping people off charging them more than a quarter million for a car that can't take a 300-ft drop. :D

You do realize it's a tablet right..... why would you expect it to hold up in a drop test? Put a huge otterbox style case on yours if you'd like it to be able to survive such a drop.
I work in roofing I expect it to survive a two-story drop to concrete

Note to self: remember to put iPad Air in a case before taking it to to the desert and dropping it 5ft.

Seriously, this test proves the iPad isn't ruggedized. I would have thought we already understood that.

Based on what physics theory?

The only thing "disgusting" about this video is taking a brand new expensive item and smashing it, while there are people in the world who cant afford to eat.

I think you may perform a drop test for yourself and see how strong the leg bones are supposed to be :D

Or even better.. Stop gravity while you're at it?

Shoot happens man. And the test means the new Air has zero tolerance to drop. Weak.

Mine is in a thin case but has been dropped a few times. Mostly onto carpet... But I was sure it was going to be broken each time. We have only broken one iPad screen at our house since the launch of the iPad and we have had a lot of them. This doesn't bode well for letting the kids use it.

this is so funny... seriously? so you're expecting the ipad to not shatter or get dented when dropped and then complain about build quality?

I was surprised to learn the iPad Air cannot stop a 9mm bullet. I mean, what kind of shoddy build quality is that? I can't use my iPad Air as a plate on my body armor? I'm taking it back.

SARCASM ALERT!

The hollow front really just gave me a headache.

Why exactly does a hollow space in an electronic device give you a headache?

This and being "disgusted" that smashing a pane of glass on rock results in breakage are probably the most inappropriate responses in the history of... well, ever.

Do you also throw up when your battery runs low? Have an uncontrollable case of flatulence when you see a nick on the bezel? Dislocate a shoulder when an app crashes?

By the way, if the hollow space "disgusts" you that much, get the LTE model. The empty space will be filled with cellular radios and antennas. But I bet that plastic cutout on the back casing on the LTE models will just about make your eyes bleed.

Some people will do anything for attention. Oh, my iPad broke when I dropped it on concrete! Oh the horror!

What does that prove? Nothing! Here's a hint, these devices were not designed to be dropped repeatedly on the concrete and bashed repeatedly with a hammer! Idiots!

We use iPads as frisbees nowadays. And with the ipad air, it's lighter and will thus fly further.

Seriously, the ipad is a delicate device no matter how "good" or "disgusting" drop tests turn out. Why do you think there is a huge market on just cases to protect these from our clumsiness. Even if apple made an ipad that withstood an 8 foot drop to concrete, would you then buy an Ipad to see if it could replicate the results? I highly doubt so.

We drop iPads. It happens. But to say that an ipad is "weak" because it broke when dropped without a case on it is just like saying you are "weak" if you fell down the steps and broke a leg. They weren't made to be dropped and abused, therefore won't survive something that it wasn't made to do.

Simple concept, but hard to understand I guess.

GizmoSlip did a drop test also and it lasted the corner drop, but not the front face drop.

http://youtu.be/C7BGYpCUMpw

To give some insight, they also tested the iPad 3 when it came out, that didn't survive the front face drop either. So it's not like it's any less durable.

Lesson being most people should be smart enough to not use it while walking around concrete unless a case is on it.

The problem is that the vertical bezels are large, yet there is nothing in there. I'm guessing the ipad 5 will have "drastically reduced bezels that never before was possible."

Just because there is a hollow space in one area doesn't mean it is like that throughout the top bezel. The camera is right in the middle. There are components there. They just aren't everywhere in the top bezel.

This is my favorite. Guy throws Apple under the bus about lack of innovation and pricing then drops the Air on dirt. There is a convenient cut away before he picks it up and presto it's damaged. Always trust a guy firing a high powered BB gun at an metal electronic. Maybe one of those ricochet caused brain damage.

Ya, I'm a bit suspect of this video too. The cut is unnecessary and suspicious. Before he goes on to drop it on concrete, you can clearly see that the front hasn't just been cracked, it's been crushed, which would require much greater pressure than the weight of the tablet itself falling.

This one seems more objective and trustworthy... If for no other reason than the results are more encouraging! ;)

Bottom line: don't drop it glass-side down. If you're prone to dropping it, get a case.

It's funny because I can hear the hollow areas when I tap on the screen. Not a complaint just an observation.

Not sure what you mean but coming from an iPad mini (which is virtually indestructible) I like the iPad Air and don't notice much difference with the build quality of the device.

what a joke. they rigged those tests. Yeah if you intentionally drop it on concrete face down etc its going to break.

Don't drop it. It's like, what would you expect from dropping a piece of glass glued to a sheet of aluminum? :)

especially when you drop it on purpose face down.
