My didn't make click sound but it screwed up the rotation occasionally. I stop using the cover and the problem went away. It was wasted $40.

My iPad Air just started doing this too. I've had it since November and have been using a Smart Cover pretty much the whole time, but the clicking just started in the last week or so. It's different than the normal soft click of the cover attaching to the ipad, and depending on how I'm holding the iPad at the time, I thought I felt something shift or vibrate very slightly under the glass a couple times. It's a sharp clicking that made me look quickly to see if the glass screen had cracked (it hadn't). I thought it was a loose magnet but shaking the iPad (gently) doesn't produce any sounds. It's just when I open the smart cover, or as I'm folding the cover over the back. Everything works fine so I don't know that it really matters, but it does concern me.

I quit using the Smart Cover yesterday and so far no more odd clicks. I have Belkin keyboard case I use while at work, and go with no cover at all when at home reading or whatever.

Well, with Smart Cover off, mine does produce a slight rattling sound when I gently shake it…

And it still clicks when the system closing sound is off, so it IS without a doubt the magnet that's gone loose…

Given the first post date, I wonder if Apple already solved the problem or if they care at all >.<

Well, you all have convinced me! It's a physical, loose clicking sound.

Hope I don't get in my Air, but the odds may be against me...

Noticed this the last couple days, 32gb that I've had for about 2-3 weeks or so. Was going to post askin about it but found this post

Hmmm...I noticed this too on my iPad Air over the last couple of days. I also noticed that when the passcode is not entered but the Smart Cover is open and then closed, the clicking sound does not happen. However, after the passcode is entered and then you open, fold back and then close the Smart Cover, the clicking sound appears.

For those of you who took the Air back to the Store, what did the people there say? Some of you have reported that you were given new devices. Some of you have also reported that the new devices also made the same sounds.

So, is there anyone who does not have this problem with the Air?

EDIT:

The clicking sound that I was referring to is the lock/ unlock sound. I tested this by going into Settings and turning on and off the lock. When turned on and the Smart Cover is closed, the clicking noise is present. When the lock is turned off and the Smart Cover is closed, the clicking noise is not there any more. Relieved!!!

I have this phenomenon with my iPad Air too! But I don't really see it as an issue - maybe it is even done on purpose?! The clicking sound comes together with a Smart Cover that sticks to the back of the device, thus you don't have to hold the Smart Cover up all the time because it wouldn't fall off the device even if you carefully grabbed the iPad without touching the sc. It does help occasionally, and therefore I think this whole clicking thing is more of a feature than a problem.

Anybody thought about that?

I am now confused about this clicking sound. Obviously, this thread is about a clicking sound that is not associated with the lock/unlock stuff.

That said, I have the Smart Cover from Apple and I find that it does not stick - at least most of the time - to the back of the device. I noticed this the day I bought it (exactly 15 days back). I asked about this and I was shows a few other devices (all iPad Airs) on which the Cover was not sticking to the back. This has not been my experience with my iPad 4, which the Air replaced. That said, it is not too much of a problem for me.

Well mine does a clicking, even if it's shut down, and then I can hold it landscape (home-button right side) at the lower left and right corners without the Smart Cover falling on my fingers, which is not really an issue but a tad annoying. I noticed it does not stick to the front if it clicked to the back first, and then the easiest thing is - you won't believe it! - to turn it upside down, then it clicks and sticks.

Let me ask you folks this: All other sounds aside, is there a discernable clicking sound when the Air locks itself? Apparently, this is a feature of ALL iPads. The fellow at the local Apple Store told me this - when I said that I could not hear such a sound when using my iPad 4, he said that I had probably missed it since this is a feature of iPads in general.

I tended to discount this when he told me first, but when I came home and tried the lock/ unlock thing that I mentioned in my last post, it turns out to as this chap described it. The only thing is that I have not been able to test this on any other iPad aside from the Air since my iPad 4 is now long gone.

Perhaps some one with an iPad 4 or 3 etc. can confirm this?

Well I'll be darned... I could SWEAR my iPad air wasn't making this noise before, but recently it's started doing it too. If I lift the smart cover and place it on the iPad's back side, it'll click, and then it will do it again when I close the cover on the screen. Also, the smart cover WILL stick to the back of the iPad casing after the click happens.

On top of this, there even seems to be a brief period of resistance or hesitation when I close the cover, as if the two poles of the magnets between the cover and the iPad are matched up to repel each other... then when the iPad "clicks," the cover switches from repelling to attraction, and snaps right into place. Kind of like the magnets in the iPad have come loose and flipping back and forth with the cover.

I'm debating whether I want to bring it in though. I don't have any other issues with it, yet.

Also, I still have my old iPad 3 and recently sold off my iPad 2. Neither of those do this clicking behavior.

Again, keep in mind this is not necessarily an issue rather than an intended feature! After the clicking sound, Smart Cover actually sticks to iPad Air better, no matter which side you just put it! I have that sound too, but why would I want to return a device that just clicks before perfectly adjusting its magnets to the case?

It's not a documented "feature," and the fact that other iPad Airs don't do this means that's one or another, there's a LOT of potentially defective iPad Airs.

I have that sound too, but why would I want to return a device that just clicks before perfectly adjusting its magnets to the case?

Because that clicking could mean the magnets are dislodged from where they should be? Because having loose but apparently powerful magnets unsecured in an electronic device might be asking for trouble down the road?

You could be right, but there is no word from Apple either way on this, which is a concern.

Wow, surprised this thread is still alive.

Since starting this thread, I honestly have just gotten used into it. It doesn't go away, unfortunately, so those thinking it is temporary, it isn't.

Honestly, Safari crashing every single time there is an embedded youtube video is more annoying. This will likely be my last ipad, selling it right before the new one comes out, quality has gone down severely.

I've got exactly the same thing. Not a problem but it wasn't what I was expecting. I did wonder if it was the buttons (sound and power) moving a little?

I decided to make an account and post on this thread.

I was searching the magnet problem and stumbled across this. Today, my iPad Air started making that hard click noise from the Smart Cover, but after opening and closing it about 5 times, the magnet flipped or switch polarity. Now my Smart Cover is being repelled by the iPad when it's closed. Also, the Smart Cover is magnetized to the back of the iPad, which never happened previously.

I just wanted to put my experience out there. I am planning on going to the Apple store this weekend and I can give you guys an update.

this is what happened to me with my Air. I would get the clicking noises only when i flipped it to the back side to read or whatever. i then noticed when i would close it, the edge flap to stick anymore. like there wasn't any magnets. it still closed on the backside

so i went to apple and they tried 3 different smart covers and came to the conclusion it was the ipad. so i had to get another one. lucky for me they were out of 32gb ipad air brown box replacements, so i ended up getting a new one. Now the cover works fine and i don't here the clicking anymore.

I've had that issue as well. I had beyzacase leather shell and when i flip the cover to the back for reading and browsing it made very high pitch clicking sound. I shipped it back and changed to another case of the same form factor with panels for the cover and a hard shelled back and its not making that sound anymore.

Don't know what that might have been but it didn't really bother much the reason i sent it back was that i didn't like that the back cover wasn't leather which i didn't know.

Don't worry its not your ipad, its the case. which was in my case so just switch the case if it bothers you so much you shouldn't hear it. i am using omnicase just in case you were wondering

Wow .... Very interesting thread.
I don't have a Smart Cover, I have a smart case (should be the same) and I can't hear any clicking noise when I put the lid on the back of the iPad .... And the lid isn't magnetized when on the back of the iPad.
