Maybe it's a stupid thing to say and maybe it points up the reason I'm a loser and not an inventor, but I personally believe even half a century from now you will be holding essentially the Air of today. Sure it may be marginally thinner with slightly smaller bezels but that is it. The human eye already can't discern a pixel on the screen, so no improvement to be had there. Battery life could probably be improved but already it is at the point where all u gotta do is charge it while you sleep and you can use it all ur waking hours and then some.

Ultimately, it's a screen. Nothing more or less. And I believe evolutionary technology, mainly pioneered by apple, has led to the point where things have been reduced to their most basic elements. The Air is about as basic in this regard as you can get. It's you and the screen. That is it. In terms of weight, thickness, display, performance......there really is not much of anywhere to go. Can you seriously point to one way the Air could be improved that real people and not techno geeks and video and audiophiles care about? Nobody cares about that fingerprint gibberish and 4k tv.
In the works:
Face recognition
Voice recognition
Solar panels behind LCD screens

Why multi user accounts ? It's too much of a personal device.

Well, there's the grand daughter who is visiting sometimes… I don't mind letting her play some games and don't want to say "no" if she wants to use the iPad. On the other hand, I don't want her to mess up my "contacts" list. Or there could be a "friends and family" account where I can give the iPad to a friend, but they can't spend any of my money on it.

If you use it for yourself only, then obviously nobody should force you to have separate accounts.

Ok so it will recognize my face and voice. Ipad is a personal device anyway, it's not of much use. So u won't have to slide the little bar to the right, which I like anyway. I find the voice command stuff stupid, we already have it with Siri, I never use it. Ok, so it will be completely solar or oxygen powered one day, no battery. So what, I don't think plugging it in now and then is a big deal. It mainly stays on my desk, always plugged in anyway.

And we don't need this multi user stuff, USB ports, expandability etc. the charm of ipad is simplicity.

The way I see it is this: The Air did one key thing - its reduced the weight of the previous generations thereby making the iPad a truly mobile device
Wasn't that the case for the iPad 2, iPad 4 and the Air? I'd say Apple has been pushing the boundaries on making a tablet lighter and thinner. We're at a point imo that you are probably more limited now. They cannot make it too much thinner.

I think there's not much else they can do feature wise, other then the CPU/GPU and some of the features we see in the iPhone 5s

Of course. And you are talking about fifty years, right?

First, people care about that "fingerprint gibberish". It's a very fast method to tell the device that I'm using it now and it can identify that I'm allowed to use it. It's not quite as useful as on an iPhone which is switched off/on a lot more, but quite useful if you add multi-user capability. Someone said it's a personal device, but that way it can be a personal device for the person holding it.

GPS with built-in maps: That would make it the ultimate satnav system. And obviously the maps can be improved. I have a TomTom, and there are tons of possible improvements. (A trivial improvement: I'm on a 100 mile trip from A to B and I need fuel _somewhere_ on that trip, I don't care where. Current SatNavs cannot tell me which petrol station requires the smallest possible detour. I'd expect that it talks to my car, finds the amount of fuel, figures out that I need some, checks fuel prices and directs me to the best possible petrol station without me doing anything).

Storage: All my music, books, videos, photos, documents should be available everywhere, anytime.

Sound: Speakers could be much improved.

Battery life: Should work for a long time without me doing anything. Better batteries, solar cells, lower power consumption, getting power wirelessly as long as I am in the right place, and so on.

Camera: You can't even imagine what could be done there. The camera should automatically detect and analyse your surroundings. In fifty years time it should be capable of analysing what people around you are doing. Warn you of dangerous situations and people, read warning signs, find the things you want to buy in a super market and compare prices for you, it can know what you wanted to cook today and lead you to all the ingredients, and so on. If you are supposed to sign a contract, the camera takes a photo of it, analyses it, reads the small print, and warns you of anything in the contract that you don't want to sign.

That's just a few quick ideas.

If you can afford it, get the Air.

I went from iPad 2 > iPad 4 > iPad Air.......and the Air is well worth it.

Compared to the 4, the reduced width and weight is really noticeable. Also, the display is improved.....it's just seems better than the 4 (not had any issues with mine, but I note others have).

Sold the iPad 2 for £280 at the time, and the iPad 4 went for £300 just after the Air came out. Both were 32Gb models, both sold on ebay.

Apple doesn't need to add multi user. It will needlessly complicate what is for most a single user device. The charm of apple is they keep stuff simple.

All the advances mentioned, and excuse me for not knowing how to quote and franky not wanting to bother........are stupid and incremental in my view. You need a computer to tell u where to get gas. Stupid. Use ur eyes.

You want all ur books, movies, songs available always. We already have that. Just get organized and u can have it now. I already covered battery life. As it is, u only need to plug in your ipad when u asleep and you can use it all ur waking hours. So no further improvement even necessary. If they want, they can build the special campers ipad edition and charge double for it since it has a special 30 hr battery.

As for cameras detecting danger and shopping for u.......dumb dumb dumb. Please remember, I ask rhetorically who cares about these things other than techno geeks? Nobody. Nothing wrong with being a geek. I spend all my time reading and writing and I couldn't care less if somebody called me a nerd.

So in the future a camera will tell u when someone is about to shoot u in da face. Awesome. Can't wait. So I'll be denied even those final few seconds of peace.

If you had multiple users and "didn't keep your ipad mainly on the desk" you would see the benefit of multiple accounts.

As for the rest of your comments... yeah, you clearly aren't an inventor, and don't seem to be much of a visionary either. You keep saying that Apple's charm is keeping things simple, but they also create devices and functions that you never knew you needed. I say that's their real charm. But again, people have different opinions... something else you can't seem to grasp.

Anywho... I for one can't wait to see what Apple comes up with. The ipad air is just the start. It's going to be like those devices in After Earth or Avatar... :D

It can be simple. Your fingerprint identifies you as the primary user and loads up your primary account, if you have a different fingerprint it loads up a guest account with the access the primary user allows. Secondary user gives it back to primary user, fingerprint automatically switches back to the primary account. Easy peasy lemon squeezy.

You must have some amazing eyes if you can see multiple gas stations more than several miles away, whether they have diesel, what prices they list, and how far they are from your current location.

Offline maps would be nice, that way you wouldn't need a data connection for Maps to send you to the wrong location. :D.

I have had the iPad 2 for a while now. I just got the iPad Air. I am blown away. The iPad Air is so much better than the iPad 2.

I've been using my iPad1 every day since I got it, I don't find it heavy at all, I tend to sit "reclined" with it on my lap and do so for hours on en or with it on a stand when on a flight or at a desk. IMO the Air is the first really big improvement, yes the Retina screen is better and the 2, 3 and 4 all made strides forward in terms of performance but the Air is a very significant step from the 1 and I will be upgrading and not waiting for the next refresh.

OP if you can sell your 4 for a good price with the warranty or you dont really care about the price to change up then make the jump otherwise I'd say keep using your 4, it's all personal preference butI wouldn't be paying $100's just further change in size and weight. I think the next Air will be an evolution not a revolution.

Thanks. Yup... I am looking to sell the iPad 4 now with 3 accessories that I bought with it. What I don't know is whether I will get a good price for it.

Did your iPad 4 have any warranty left on it? Is 6 months warranty worth extra? Also, how much do you think I could charge for a package deal - iPad 4 + Smart Cover (Apple) + Speck SmartCase + Logitech Keyboard for iPad. The iPad is like yours, 32 GB WiFi only. Thanks.

I sold my ipad 4 on Craig's list for 320 last weekend. I shoulda asked 350. The day after I placed the ad, phone was ringin off da hook. First person to meet me bought it, handed over the money, no haggling. That inspired me to rescue my ps3 from the pawn shop for seventy bucks and list it on cl and I'm fixin to meet someone shortly to sell that for 120. Not bad. Amazing what a bit of anti laziness can do. I was wary of this stuff bcuz of the reports of people being murdered selling their iPads, game systems etc

Yeah well, I am not how the system works here in the UK as compared to the US. eBay is an option, I guess.

You asked what will Apple do to make the iPad more useable?

They are coming out with a larger 12" Pro version this year. While the specs are still rumored at this juncture, we believe it is aimed at the entertainment industry and others who use video resolutions above 1080. Panasonic already has a 20" tablet that displays 4K resolution. This will be a godsend to the TV and movie industry as they move away from HD video to 4 and 8K. To be able to view dailies in the same resolution as they are shot will save time and money for live action productions.

I can the engineering fields using these as well. I am sure that Apple has these and many other applications in mind - they don't make products people can't use well before launch.

See this is a philosophical issue that is related to so many things. You've got your camp who wants widgets, bigger battery, wants stronger frame, who want a higher ppi or better color gamut like n7 and others, who want more storage like 32 as the base, multi user, porn and on and on........all greed. You want something for free. And your approach is different from the apple approach.

Apple is saying we will give you a beautiful, handcrafted machine that oozes quality out of every pore, which has superb resale value and longevity for a reasonable and fair price. Where you go from there is up to you, in terms of your individual needs.

I personally am glad they have a 16 gb model. Yes, it involves some deleting. It's called discipline. I like the periodic deletions because they remove apps I grew weary of, which is probably about fifty. Keeps my desktop neat. Only neat area of the room.

What the others said about the screen rolling out, bending, folding......whatever. Still just a screen. Even if they program it to one day smack the crap out of you, still just a machine.

I think the next generation will have 2 GB of RAM, and maybe a faster processor too. Although Apple may reduce the weight even further down the line, it won't be their first priority - and it's unlikely to change significantly this year already.

I was close to buying the iPad 4 last summer already. Now that I see how it was worth it, I'm glad that I waited until the iPad Air was out. I wouldn't have waited for a whole year, though, and I doubt the next generation will be worth waiting for that long.

Think more ram is right also we'll see Touch ID in the next Air and Mini.

I think any real innovation will subsequently have to come from the software side (which in turn needs to wait for the hardware to be adequate first). Gimmicks like a fingerprint sensor, solar charging or air gestures are really secondary in importance.

While Win8 tablets technically allow you to do "real productivity" tasks such photoshop, and Android tablets allow for mouse support and docking to a monitor, I dislike how they choose to go about it (you need to prop it on a desk, then attach a keyboard and mouse, effectively simulating a laptop). IMO, true mobile computing should be moving away from these artefacts, not falling back on them.

What I want to see is real desktop-class apps properly redesigned and optimised for use on a touchscreen (and little else). We know people are already creating podcasts and publishing books on IOS devices. Not necessarily the most fluid or intuitive of workflows, but certainly possible. How do we take that one step further?

As such, what I feel Apple needs to do is to give us an iPad with really powerful specs (at least 4gb, quad-core ARM processors and 256gb of storage), as well as a template of how to go about creating IOS-versions of power-apps like Logic Cut, Adobe Photoshop and Aperture. While they are at it, improve inter-app communication as well so people don't have to keep falling back on dropbox as a makeshift file manager.

Hi all,

I have read some threads here regarding what to expect after the release of the iPad Air. They have been informative, nevertheless, I want to ask this question again, because I am now actively thinking about moving from my iPad4 to the Air (despite what I may have mentioned earlier in this regard).

The way I see it is this: The Air did one key thing - its reduced the weight of the previous generations thereby making the iPad a truly mobile device. Don't get me wrong, while I have no real issues handling my iPad 4, but it does get wearisome because I am reading for about 4-5 hours a day, which is my typical use scenario.

So, what more can Apple do to the iPad? I am not sure they can make a significant difference in weight - there are logical limits to what they can do in this regard. Yes, they can include more RAM - but for my reading purposes, which is what I would use the iPad for, a bump in RAM is largely irrelevant. They could have a larger screen - not sure that would be of any benefit for my use case especially where mobility is concerned. I don't know how they can make the screen any better than what it already is (technically, perhaps they can).

Why am I asking this? Because I would not like to buy the iPad only to find out that 8-9 months down the line Apple has made a significant change to the device. And since I am new to Apple (though I have had my iPad 4 for about 6 months), is what I am asking similar to what happened in the transition between the iPad 3 to iPad 4?

Last question: My iPad 4 is about 6 months old. So, technically, it has 6 months of warranty left. If I sell the device would the warranty transfer onto the new owner?

Thanks in advance.

I dont think the form will be changes for two more years. Of course there will be a newer faster processor with mor RAM and they will ad touch id and they will probably upgrade the camera but i think apple will possibly shift focus to adding a higher resolution screen to compete with other tablets(this may go for the iphone 6 as well) and they may add smaller features in the future such ad a smart bezel(this rumor has been floating around for
a few years and probably will not happen) or they may add curved displays so you can be "swallowed up" into the ipad as it "surrounds" you(although i think if apple were to make a curved ipad they would sell it separately and call it the ipad curve or something along that line because not all people would want a curved 10 inch tablet as it would be less portable.

Thanks. What is a smart bezel?

Thanks. What is a smart bezel?

Look at the 3rd picture in the slide show from cnet. A smart bezel is the black/white part around the screen of an ipad and it would be somewhat like a touh screen such as sliding your finger along the black/white bezel on the side of your ipad to scroll through safari.

It is kinda like the home buttons on an android phone where the button doesnt really push in and it just senses your finger-such ad in the like above on slide 3

What about a Mini with retina?

Umm...no...I checked out the rMini at my local Apple Store, but I find the form factor to be too small.

Thanks....Hmm...now that would be cool, I think. Though (1) I rarely use a browser on the iPad unless it is to sign into a WiFi service that I need to access; (2) on PDF Expert and iBooks (two apps that I use very heavily), I always use the horizontal scrolling. Nevertheless, it looks like a useful feature to have.

If you're able to get job done using your iPad, don't waste your money.
