iPad - better performance, better screen, better battery, better apps, better privacy, better security, better support. You could probably go on and on.
But the Surface runs a full desktop version of Windows. iPad OS still has to catch up, most in terms of applications. Some mac apps (if not most of them) are not available for iPad OS.

I actually did an iPad app with powerful window interface to make iPad as close to desktop experience as possible. However, it was rejected by Apple review, so unfortunately, it is not in App Store. Here is a video demo of that app:

That your project got rejected could not come as a surprise to you - it is in violation of the rules, even if it is really cool (I would lose the Windowsy feel, makes it seem gross).

I surely hope you can find an outlet for your skill and creativity on this project, It is time for a new OS paradigm period.

Because in non-tablet mode Windows uses a mouse, so the keyboard cover has a trackpad.

Also, the keyboard for Surface has two positions. One flat just like iPad, the other raised a bit.

Im not questioning the use of the trackpad. I’m questioning the positioning of the trackpad. So much wasted space.

iPad is a great companion tool but not a replacement for a laptop. Maybe someday but I can't see it happening anytime soon.

Correct.

I tried using an Ipad as a laptop replacement for the last 4 months.
Lack of trackpad and lack of true preemptive multitasking makes the experience garbage like I haven't experienced since MacOS 7/8/9 in the 1990s.

Utter garbage. A Windows 98 laptop is a better overall experience. At least windows 98 has true multitasking.

I waited 8 years for Apple to improve on my 2011 MBA. The new MBA is NOT what I waited for.

I've bee waiting 5 (?) years for a MacBook improvement (magsafe or a second USB port, as that would be a truly worthy MBA replacement. Instead the idiots in Cupertino discontinued it without warning.

So since there is no longer any FANLESS MacOS laptop being made, I just bit the bullet and bought one of the last maxed out MacBooks before they're all gone.

I'll probably have to buy one of the last stock of iPhone 8+ after the next iPhone update as well, since there may not be a decent successor to that until 2020 or beyond - it seems all new iPhones currently rumored will continue to have garbage low PPI or garbage OLED screens.

Apple is truly being run by idiots now, it's undeniable.

I am even more disgusted now by Apple Management. Their stupidity is outshined only by their arrogance.

My condolences for your amazing app.

That's what I plan on doing. I really dislike my XR... I don't like the lower PPI, the lack of telephoto lens, etc. And the newer phones are just not worth the price.

As for Macs, I waited years as well for a proper update. It never came. I switched to Lenovo. ThinkPad keyboards are friggin' awesome.

Thank you, StralyanPithecus. I re-did this app in Android and it can be downloaded from Google Play (it is free but you need Android tablet to install it):

Here is video a presentation of Android version (some gestures were changed to get rid of Apple-patented designs):

Unfortunately I'm avoiding Google and Google based stuff like it's a plague, but the guys at Apple must take a look at your app and learn how to make the iPadOS a little more powerful because even with the 13 update (I'm using it now), still lacks a lot of options in file management.

I have the Surface 2 and it is pretty bad, I haven't used it since more than a year now. I don't even remember where I kept it.

The ARM based Surface 2 from 2013 that ran WinRT? No question that thing was a turd. That device shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath as the Surface Go.

True track pad/mouse support is till a pretty big deal to a lot of us and that didn't happen in ipad os.

...yet.

it looks like the direction apple is headed in, however.
all that iPadOS needs is a Smart Keyboard that allows trackpad input.
maybe spring 2020?

I get that this article is comparing mid-range devices (Surface Go and iPad Air) but I think for laptop replacements it would have been better to compare the Surface Pro and the iPad Pro 11 or 12.9". The Surface Pro with its Core i5 is definitely snappy and makes a pretty good laptop replacement (or tablet when in Windows 10 tablet mode) especially since it has full mouse support. It has a beautiful screen as well, and makes a good note taking and drawing slate with the Microsoft Pen.

The newest generation iPad Pro 12.9" with its A12X chip is wicked powerful and when teamed up with a bluetooth keyboard (I have the Logitech model which is pretty nice, and backlit too) it also makes a great laptop replacement. The one major drawback for the iPad is it not having proper mouse support (why that is still the case I have no idea, it would be relatively trivial for Apple to add a mouse driver to the newest iteration of iPad OS).

So, the TLDR version? The upper tier versions of Apple and Microsoft's tablets make pretty good laptop replacements, but still have a little room for improvement.

acute angle

along with iPadOS and its apps development, mechanically what is also needed is for iPad to be able to have some kind of hinged keyboard that allows for acute angles.

mac laptops have always the industry's best hinges. really outstanding hinges.
iPad's attached keyboard needs to have this kind of functionality as well.

Pretty cool. How much time did it take to write this app?

Neither is a laptop replacement or marketed as such. They both are for basic stuff but heavily underpowered to be considered laptop replacements.

Surface pro 6 vs iPad Pro, those are marketed as laptop replacements and at the level these comparisons should be made.
