+1 OP.... Air dilutes the "Air" brand for the laptops and is confusing for customers. How about "iPad 5" like everybody on this forum calls it. Dumb marketing. What's the next version going to be?

I din't see how it is confusing to customers. Those who own/purchase/think of a macbook air associate it with a lighter, thinner version of the pro... which is what the new iPad is compared to it's predecessor.

On the matter of the new mini' pricing... oh, wrong thread.:D

I was actually really expecting this

You know, that this is completely possible with the new form factor as it would be about the same size as the last gen iPad.

I agree.

I read the headline (missed the keynote), and thought that Apple had released an OSX tablet.

Really disappointed when I found out it was just the "ipad 5".

Really? Someone should get fired? Where's the downvote button when you need it?

Please consider our upvotes for you as downvotes for the OP. Thanks.

Makes perfect sense if they are keeping the iPad 2. Now they have a regular sized iPad and a thin and light version of the iPad. Perfect sense.

Spoken like a true yes-man committee member from the marketing department. Fear trumps logic every time in the good ol' marketing department!

What possible permutation of confusion can you honestly imagine? Truly.

A blind, senile woman comes into an Apple store to purchase a Macbook Air, but accidentally leaves with an iPad Air because all the salespeople are gone and the iPads are stacked up on the sales floor so people can just help themselves, and she can barely make out the name on the box, but sees "Air"?

A clueless dad orders his kid a $1000 MacBook Air instead of a $400 iPad Air because his tech savvy kid said "Just get me an Air Dad. Any old Air Anything will do."?

On the extremely off chance that someone is somehow miraculously, remotely confused between a MacBook Air and an iPad Air, for even a nanosecond, all they have to do is hunt around a bit for the little word that comes before the word Air. MacBook. Or. iPad. Zero confusion.

I think you're underestimating the newcomers. There's tons of referrals, which is why people come to Apple Stores in the first place. I've personally dealt with customers (when I worked retail this summer), where they came in specificaly because mother, father, daughter...whatever recommended an Apple product. They come in saying "my daughter told me iPad something or Air something". So my response to that would have been (provided I still worked there) - "did you mean Macbook Air or iPad Air?". Then they follow by giving the "oh I don't know show me" whatever sch-peal and we end up spending a while for that transaction.

Trust me, that does happen quite often.

Considering they often actually say "the iSomething" then your argument holds no real value. It's very easy to differentiate to the customer the difference between an iOS tablet and a Mac Laptop. The word Air will not add additional confusion that the "i" branding doesn't already. In fact, the Air moniker will just reinforce that there are thin and light versions of other full-sized products. It's that simple.

Completely the opposite. It expands the "Air" product marketing by making it clear that there are thin and light versions of their full-sized products. To me it adds value and enforces the true intention of the Air branding.

Couldn't have said it better my Air Self.

You could be right with the iSomething but as I mentioned earlier there are people who refer to it as the new Air or whatever and that can be confusing. I've worked retail so there's tons of customers (ranging from those who have tons of knowledge, to those who don't even know the button on the bottom of the device is called "home" button).

I going to go out on a limb and say I've probably worked retail longer than you so I'm going to go with my own expertise on this. No matter what you do, you will always get confused customers asking for something completely off the wall with some screwed up version of the name. Saying that adding "Air" to the name is going to create more confusion is just not a valid argument. That's like saying "Super Size" at McDonalds is confusing.

Apple has already established they're going to call their iPads by whatever name they want, whenever they want, for no reason at all. I don't know why this latest example has got so many people upset. It could be worse, they could've called this one "The New iPad 2".

Look, it's no different than when they called the iPod, iPod Classic. Before that, it was just iPod. Maybe they should've called this new iPad the iPad Classic. It doesn't really matter. What matters is that now, when somebody says iPad, people won't just assume it's the larger iPad, when maybe they're really talking about the iPad mini. I guarantee you, there's people who call their mini, just plain old iPad. Now, at least, people will have to be more specific, which will cut down on consumer confusion. I imagine this was much the same reason they started calling it the iPod Classic, once there were other models.

Here's hoping this is the end of the nonsense, and Apple will just call one model the iPad Air, and one model the iPad mini, and leave all the numbers and such behind for good. Then, maybe, they can do the same with the iPhone. With the whole "s" dynamic, though, they probably won't. It'll be interesting to see what number/letter combination next year's iPhone Color ends up with.

I don't think it's upsetting, just feel that it's not as good as a name as they could've come up with. I mean they have some of the best talent working there so it could've been something catchier.

There are plenty of misinformed/uneducated customers in any store. The job of someone working retail is to educate and inform. I've managed a few retail stores and worked in plenty others. An uneducated customer is the best kind, you can add value to the purchase by explaining the importance of warranties and accessories.

I don't really understand this post. You don't like the name because you would have to do your job better.

I really could care less about what they named it. My new Air is even an upgrade to my 4. Browser is SO much faster that just that alone is worth it to me. Everything seems faster, even the keyboard has faster response.

Happy here.

I don't mind it. Since the "new iPad" the naming has been messed up (IMO)

Does anybody realize "the new" wasn't part of the name? It was just iPad, and saying "the new" was just saying "the new version".

This "the new iPad is so confusing omg my brain hurts" **** is unbelievable .That many people were able to misunderstand something that which has such a basic concept? Really? Does your friend tell you they bought a "new car" and you think the title is "new car"?

Ugh...people

I think iPad Air is a much better name than The New iPad and iPad with retina display.
