Do you think it will be possible to tether iPhone to iPad?

Do you think it will be possible to tether the iPad to the iPhone? Has anyone tried to tether an iPhone and the iPod Touch using the official implementation over bluetooth? This will actually make a big difference on whether or not I get the 3G version.

I have a 3G which I only use for tethering via bluetooth. I never updated to the newer iphone O/S for this reason. I use this on the road with my MBP and MB and without any problem. I see no reason I would not be able to do so with an ipad.

Though I would definitely invest the extra $130 for the 3G I might just opt for the lower rate plan rather than paying the morons ATT another $30.00 a month for an unlimited plan.

Tethering iPad with the iPhone - Apple should be careful

If Apple/network providers decide to inhibit the ability to tether the internet with your iPhone to the iPad - they would be doing themselves a HUGE dis-service.

There are 42,482,000 iPhones sold world-wide to date.

We as iPhone owners already pay an inflated cost to Apple and our network providers to use this "cool new device". I don't know anyone who would pay another monthly amount (even if its ONLY $15-$30) for the iPad, including an extra $130.00 for the HW upgrade. The features on it just are NOT good enough to warrant that extra cost for full functionality, which was the general consensus after the keynote on the iPad.

That said, I could see the value in having a household-surfing device with a large screen (that I may take on the road from time to time) However I would need to have the ability tether my already 6GB of data that I currently do not use to the iPad - that would justify me spending $499.99 for the base model, Apple's other option is me spending NOTHING with them.

Without this functionality I will not purchase ANY version of the iPad because I don't need another monthly bill, especially to get another version (albeit larger) of the device I already own (iPhone 3GS). I would suspect that a majority of the 43M iPhone owners out there would share my view - in which case Apple is losing a lot of potential revenue. There is NO logical reason why Apple should inhibit this function which will showcase an incompatibility between their own devices, because there is still a market for their 3G models. Anyone without an iPhone would find use in upgrading and paying the extra $130.00 + $15-$30/mo - I really hope that Apple doesn't punish their 'other' product adopters by making them pay twice....That will definitely lead to a loss in revenue, and rightfully so.

My 2 cents....

I'm not so sure that is true. To share my iPhone's 3G connection with my MacBook, I have to adjust my MacBook network preferences to Create a new network. Then I connect to that network on my iPhone, then run the NetShare application.

Since the iPad runs the same OS as the iPhone, I don't believe I'll be able to make those same network options on the iPad to broadcast a wireless network like I can on the MacBook.

So....unless you know something I don't know....I don't think your statement is entirely true.

I don't believe Netshare will work with iPad because since it's running the same OS as the iPhone, you won't be able to "create" a network, which is what has to be done on a laptop or desktop to start the Netshare setup process...

Yes. According to the SDK there is a component/preference that allows you to share Internet connection using the iPhone's 3G. There are UI strings that mentions using the iPhone's Internet connection sharing via Wifi. So in that case the iPhone becomes the Wifi router and uses 3G as Internet source. You pair your iPad via iPhone's Wifi.

Update: I also found that the iPad's 3G subscription model has a bandwidth usage counter and asks you that if your 250MB is almost consumed, it asks you if you want to purchase more bandwidth.(this doesn't apply to unlimited model)

Why don't you guys just get a Mifi and connect both iPhone, iPad, netbooks, macbooks and so forth to it?
If it was available in Norway, that's what I would do :|
You can get the MiFi in Europe. You need to put a SIM card in. There's also the Dlink MyPocket 3G, which is essentially the same.

People who already have 3G data on their iPhone do not want to subscribe to another 3G when they can just share Internet between them in the same data pool.

When my ISP cable was down, I used my
iPhone to share between 4 computers. It was a crazy idea but it works.

Hi, Jez..

So do you interpet that to mean the iPad would be able to be tethered with an iPhone running Netshare.

Or is this mostly for other jailbroken tethering apps..

Thanks!

Then just wait for your subscription to run out.

There's no need to use the iPhone to funnel 3G data.

But ideally the networks should be allowing us to connect all our devices under the same plan.

Tethering is the one thing that may get me to Jailbreak my phone. I really don't want to but I do need the flexibility to use my phone as a network device if necessary. BUT I do this so rarely that I can't see paying extra for it. But if I get an iPad, I may need it more often, but still not a lot, and thus paying for 3G on the Pad doesn't seem realistic either.

Maybe if there was a plan like, $25 / GB (not per month), I could get behind that because 1 or 2GB per year is all I really need.

Sorry that is true for netshare, because it like PDAnet function different than MyWi. MyWi basically turns your iPhone into a Mifi device (portable wifi hotspot). Flip the switch and it's a wifi hotspot. PDAnet, Netshare likely won't work with the iPad simply because of how they work and connect to your computer.

If you have an iPhone, we don't have a choice to pay the 30 bucks for data. If you mean dump the iPhone for the iPad, I'll pass, that's silly as the iPhone is still very useful in many situation and the iPad is hardly a replacement.

There is absolutely a need to use the iPhone for 3g data. It can become a wifi hotspot sitting in your pocket and you don't have to pay AT&T for yet another useless 3g data plan. This will drive way more people to jailbreak their iPhone because it is so easy and takes less than 5m to do. The process is so simple and easily reversible if at some point you needed to take it in for repair/service.

Why would I waste 130 bucks + 15 to 30 per month when I already have a device that can provide the exact same stream of data? Sorry I'm not going to follow the blind, deaf and dumb sheep that do whatever AT&T and SJ tells them to do.

I'm not sure what Netshare is but what I see is there a way you can tether to the iPhone which is built-in iPad's System Preferences.

I tested the MYWI application on my Iphone and my wife's Iphone. I was able to turn my Iphone into a wifi hotspot, connect to it with my wife's (over wifi) and browse at identical speeds on 3G.

It will work easily on the Ipad.

Hey aarong50, can you state exactly what you did to make that work ? What app are you running that you can download through the App Store ?

Here is a tip.

PDANet/NetShare won't work with tethering as many people have said. That method requires you to create an Ad-Hoc network on the computer, not on the iPhone. That would not be possible with the iPad (as it is not currently possibly with the iPhone).

However, MyWi does allows you to create a WiFi access point straight from the phone. Now, here is the tip: Get the MyWi that has No Rock. When I tried to install the version that has the Rock Extensions, it bricked my iPhone twice. I am all set to go now using the No Rock version, and everything is awesome.

iPad will not know that I'm tethering to the iPhone. It just knows I'm connecting to a wireless network, at the same speeds as 3G ;-).

Now, someone above said they saw an officially supported WiFi Tethering solution, and if it's true, I would gladly pay for that if it was reasonable.

I'm saving my cash for the 32GB WiFi only version rather than the 16GB + 3G.

Why dont more people use PDAnet???

I use this on my Iphone all the time and tether wireless with my Mac Pro without problems and very very fast speeds. I would think if the Ipad sees a wireless network you should be able to tether without a problem

So are you saying to use cydia to download the app and not use rock...I didnt even think about the ad hoc thing good point

To elaborate on this tip, here are some instructions on how to use MyWi to get this up and running.

http://rtfm-nub.blogspot.com/2010/04/use-iphone-tethering-to-get-3g-on-your.html

It uses a jailbroken iPhone running MyWi (3G to WiFi forwarding) software, to which your iPad connects. Your iPad thinks its just a WiFi network like any other, as others have said. Enjoy!
