My totally non-tech friend, who has an iPhone, but pays zero attention to tech blogs or forums, or tech news in general, asked me the other day;

"Why did Apple turn my phone into a teenager's toy?"

He was referring to iOS7.

Sometimes Apple's foresight, and/or insight, into their target audiences is astounding.

Your non-tech friend has something common with me as a tech nerd. :)

iPhone's will always sell.

It's a large market with plenty of business for everyone. Apple stands out due to its unlimited marketing budget.

Is this really news? Everyone on the planet has their head arched downwards checking their !@#$%^ phone all day long. I hate the damned things, personally and LOVE my by-the-minute tracfone.

Nothing to see here.... ;)

Disagree all you want. That doesn't make it fact.

You have your opinion. I have mine. They are opinions. Neither one can be promoted as a fact to generalize across the board.

True enough.

But as someone who has wiped and set up both the S4 and my iPhone about 8 times in the last two days, (software configuration testing) and making a darn good living supporting users for the last 15 years I like the odds of my opinion carrying some weight...;)

I agree with this. I buy my phones off contract so it is still priced a bit too high for me to choose the 5c over the Nexus 4, but you are right in that parents of teens that are already on a family plan contract with AT&T, Verizon, etc. will spend $99 on a 5c or 2 for Christmas. They are going to pay the same bill anyway. Might as well use the upgrade and make the kid really happy.

Exactly... If you are on a mobile share plan with 10GB of data at AT&T then it is only $30 per month per smartphone and $99 to buy the phone. If your teen already has a smartphone then you are already paying the $30 per month. The cost of entry for an iPhone 5c for your teenager for Christmas is one-fifth the price of an XBox One. Of course the recurring cost of $30 per month adds up to $360 per year.

Wow. Can you define several years for me? Several implies 4-5 at minimum (a year being one, couple 2, a few 3). First iPhone 2007 (6 years), G1 (first android phone to mass market - October 2008, so five years). So let's assume these lots of people include a lot of non techies, so they buy phones on two year contracts. G1 in October 2008. Then iPhone 4 in 2010. What android phone did they get in 2012? Just curious.

Sorry. I meant several as in three (which is/was the length of a typical contract in Canada until recently).

If you own an HTC One or Samsung S4 - it's easy to use right out of the box. You don't need to be a techie. You don't need to customize anything. They (and iPhones) are ALL great phones.

All tech has SOME learning curve for new or migrating users.

To me, iPhone is much smoother and simpler to use. I would get an iPhone if I were a complete tech idiot. Android phones are so slow out of the box. You definitely gotta install a custom ROM to get the most out of the tech. Other than that caveat, I do like Android. But at the end of the day, 95% of all smartphone users use their phones in the same way, regardless of OS.

So... everyone should stop the hate

Not for long.

Maybe for the US market the iPhone is still relevant.

But for all other markets across the world, and for markets in the fast-growing Asian economies which will account for most of the demand -- consumers have mostly turned to Andoid phones with better specs and bigger screens.

Just travel outside of the US and go see for yourself.

Where do these teenagers get the money for such devices?

i was thinking the same thing. these devices are not cheap. when i was in high school my parents brought me this cheap alcatel phone and told me if i want something fancier to get a job and buy it myself.

An iPhone on a contract or an older model iPhone isn't really THAT difficult for most people to afford. And if their parents can't afford it, many teenagers have part-time jobs.

Can someone under 18 get a phone on contract on their own?

I wonder how much of this is due to the kids being exposed to (and becoming familiar with) the larger iPads at school. I have a middle schooler and a high schooler that both were issued iPads this year instead of textbooks, and they laugh at the Mini's size.
this,or the whole bigger is better mentality of kids and teens..

My (mid-30's) friend at work says exactly that, and that is why he loves his iphone. He finds android too geeky and complicated. Apple nailed the pick up and play market - no shame in that.

Edit:
Some people on here seem to be taking your comment rather personally, getting all defensive (and attacking) when you were making a general observation. Actions do speak louder than words.

lol android too geeky? the android OS was a direct knock off of the iOS operating system.

its not more geeky, or for tech fiends, maybe someone that wants a ridiculous amount of space in their phone (64 GB is quite enough, although i know there are some that need more)

other than that, why get an android, i mean besides cosmetics and screen size.

its a crappier OS, more unstable, bugs, devices get slower and outdated faster, security issues.

the reason why its more complicated is because its a knock off OS, its not because its more advance or more "geekier" in fact i like to believe the opposite. i mean come on the touch screen responsiveness isnt as close to Apple's iOS.

and the funny thing is MOST of my friends that are NOT tech savy use androids. simply because they got it cheaper through a deal and their network doesnt carry them, but now that t-mobile got it as well, all of them want iphones.

Android phone specs might be better, but LOL does it really make a difference? its running on different OS and if they both run smoothly u wont notice the difference, infact how can you, i find it VERY HARD TO BELIEVE THAT IT MAKES A DIFFERENCE TO A CASUAL USER.

the ram, processor, and disk specifications really come in when you develop for businesses, and how big their databases are, how much data are you gonna pull at one time and how much data can the phone handle. (and no this doesnt mean having over 10,000+ music, or having hundreds of movies)

none of you casual users will run into this problem, end of story, the only similar situation you'll ever be in is if a high end Game app isnt supported by your device because its old.

excuse me? do YOU go outside the US?

if you do, you would know that an iPhone is ridiculously expensive outside of US (or any country without a contract plan)

lol, so misinformed, im assuming your talking about china (soon to be the biggest consumer in the next couple decades) and india (im korean american, leaving out korea because their hugely biased to samsung, and for the fact that their population isnt nearly as close to any of these 2 countries)

what ever these countries trends are, is basically the "asian" market, you're talking about a 2nd-3rd world countries, and i visit these places quite often for work. and if you been to 2nd-3rd world countries, youll know how materialistic they are.

they dont get androids by choice they get it because they cant afford it. its simple as that.

theres basically no argument. its clear cut and stone, an average chinese cant afford an iphone

lol and what 2% (which is quite alot when you think about billions) of india only use iphones, WHY because THEY CAN AFFORD THEM DAMN THANGS.

and how do i know they want apple products? because everyone i meet at these countries ooh and awww when they see one, materialistic crap puts them at a higher social status, and the fact that not everyone can get one.

especially shanghai everyone has iphones and ipads, or they try to get them. and the fact that they are AMERICAN products is very appealing.

Bigger screens yes maybe but i assume thats rare, because i know these guys would like to show off their "apple" products to their friends rather than having a "bigger screen"

its not choice, its because they have no choice. how are they going to spend ridiculous amounts of money on an iphone when that money can feed their family for months? or a year?

lol at using the Asian Market as an example. you would of made a better argument in Western Europe, where the average person can actually afford apple products.

You need to check yourself, watch your mouth, and stop discriminating against others.

Some kids work before college or even postgrad.

I reffed hockey from age 12. Using ref funds, birthday, and Christmas money, I bought a laptop at age 13. It was a Toshiba running Windows ME for around $1,400 from Circuit City.

I then sold it a year later for a few hundred, combined with mostly more ref money, bought a new HP for around $1,200. Used that for 4.5 years until it burned out. I also bought an Archos Jukebox 20 GB MP3 player that was a few hundred and an Xbox.

Between Senior year of high school and college, I bought my own MacBook ($1,143 with a USB modem add on heh). That old thing has kept chugging along until now, but it's limping to its finish and I'm in the market for something new.

The most I made one year reffing as a teen was $1,500-2,000, plus I started bussing tables at 15 (then Subway and Panera later). Maybe my parents should have made me invest/save some, but it was my money to use how I wanted.

Now at 24, I use reffing as supplementary income to my salaried job, as well as a decent excuse to keep skating/staying active. This month I'll make ~$500 in side cash from reffing hockey and I don't even ref that often or that high of levels compared to the diehards, who probably clear a grand a month without blinking. There's nothing better to do on a weekday evening for $20-40/hour or $30-60 for 90 minutes.

a) What is your point here? He considers Android more geeky as there is more setup required. Placing widgets, setting steps are slightly less glossy etc. Basically he thinks it requires more tech knowledge to setup. Its relation to IOS means nothing. It is merely his perception anyway, whether it is correct or not is another matter.

b) What statistics have you got to support that Android is slower, crashes and more unstable than IOS? You just described my iPhone 4S perfectly! My Nexus 4 has been rock solid by comparison, and on the odd occasion it has crashed, at least it has the courtesy to give me a message to let me know which app has stopped working. When my iPhone just hangs or crashes out it it just flashes back to the home tile screen, as if it is pretending that nothing happened and actually it was just my imagination.

Basically you posted a whole load of stuff there (and SHOUTING does not add more weight to any of it) whilst managing to make not a single definable point.

Iphone Usage in Australia

Wow! I'm also seeing tons of iPads and iPhones here in Australia and its amazing how Apple has conquered the competition among gadgets. But I have to agree, Apple has the best features in terms of technology and gadgets. Well done!

Interesting that you imply that iPhones are for 'complete tech idiots' then say we should stop the hate.
