that would be pretty nice but most of us have several hundred downloaded apps
here's my app count View attachment 270038

No, most of us don't. An average of 60 apps are downloaded per iOS device. And even if we did all have hundreds of apps, I fail to see why being able to see all the apps we've installed in a list would be a problem.

Whoa! Either that figure is way off the mark or I don't fit at all in the "most of us" category.

i didn't say it was a bad thing, that change would be very welcome but my point is that it would be kind of a mess. at least in my case.

There are many of us that have a lot of apps. I have 244 and that does not include the 100's of documents and books/PDF's on my iPad either. Like I posted many times. I can pretty much do everything my macbook can - with the exception of mass file storage (approaching the 1tb mark), heavy video editing (I can do light editing). in fact at times - it is easier and more convienant to just use my iPad rather than my macbook.

No, it's nothing quite like a 'full cloud backup system'. All the content already lives on Apple servers, there's no point in them storing every users copy of Angry Birds separately. Just storing it once as they have always done is enough….

When you browse the App Store app on your iPad now, it will just be checking against your iTunes purchase history, in addition to what it was doing before which was checking what was physically installed. It's that simple.

like the above user said....

Not sure how Apple is doing it, but all it takes is a database of each user who bought something and link that user to a copy of the app. If the match is there - it tells them it is already purchased and asks to install.

For example:

Use Customer, Apps
Select ID, App from customer_purchases
IF APP in APP_Purch Then goto Install
Else goto BUY
End If

Ok, not exactly how it may be programmed - but you get the point, This is more psuedo code than following a languages exact syntax.

However the idea of a full cloud backup would be nice - expensive considering how many apple users there are. But there are other companies that offer cloud backups. could not imagine the cost for the 1tb I am going to need.

Now begs a question - what if the future direction means no more local copies in your itunes. that would be a bad idea. I could not see paying $nnn for an app, not install it right away - then find out I can't due to it being pulled from the App store. No, we need to keep local copies in itunes (this was just answering someone else who questioned when itunes download would be going away and we now sync in the cloud).

A huge reduction in the number of low-rated apps purchased.

The ability to filter by rating is HUGE. Many people will set this to 3 or 4 stars and leave it. Sales of lower rated apps will plummet.

Whoa! Either that figure is way off the mark or I don't fit at all in the "most of us" category.

The average is 60 so there are plenty of us with a ton of app downloads. I have 508 myself. They are not all currently installed but I have downloaded and tried all of those.

This is a great thing for the store and I hope it migrates to the other stores.

As a side note does anyone else have a problem voting positive/negative on stories? The total count never increases when I click. I'm also curious as to who in the heck would vote negative on this story????

I wish they would add this functionality for iPhone. I constantly "buy" apps that are on sale for free (or a significant discount) that I won't use, just in case I want to use them later. I rarely remember what I previously bought so this would be great.

i usually delete the app but keep the ipa file and back it up myself

this is beautiful if you do your purchases from the device itself. I may do that 30% of the time. Need something similar if going in through itunes, this way it will check my apps to see if I already purchased it.

What also would be nice. Like podcasts, ItunesU, etc - would be for it to automatically download your purchases (that were made on the device) to itunes when you start itunes. This way - I would not have to sync every device.

Updates though, still give me the choice.. Some updates either removed features I liked or the update just simply stinks and crashes a lot.

Remember when you delete an app off the device, it just does not sync to that device. I have many apps on my ipad - that I deleted off my iphone. And my wife's iphone only has 1/4 of the apps - as she doesn't use them. I manage all devices and our music through 1 computer.

I don't understand why this is only on the ipad and not on the iphone. The software is pretty much the same...the only difference in the device is the screen size (and of course, the phone aspect...)
What would be the big issue with having this feature on the iphone as well? That would be like if apple had brought the mac app store to 17" MBP but not the 13" MBP.

On a related note, the Comcast Xfinity app just updated with the ability to watch certian TV and on demand content...but only on the ipad. Makes no sense...

The search filters are really cool, but the install buttons are awesome because I have way too many apps and can often not remember if I own the paid version or just used the light version.

Always makes me wonder how Apple push OTA updates to the App Stores but not other apps. Is the App Store just a glorified HTML page?

iTunes and the App Store are both web based apps and are not native like, example: Angry Birds (that is why you must be online to access the content). So Apple doesn't have to do an OTA update, they just have to update their end of the server.

So yes, it is a glorified HTML page.

Like 2 years ago I knew that I had downloaded the app SoundHound, but I wasn't sure if I had the Free version or the Paid version and looking at my billing history, it did say SoundHound - Free, but I wasn't able to distinguish the difference between the two.

Either way, I knew (but I was not certain) that I had downloaded the app before they began charging $4.99 for the app, and I was always afraid to click buy and actually get charged. So as soon as I read this article, I grabbed my iPad and searched for SoundHound, and even though this is a Universal App, it said:

iPad Version - $4.99
iPhone Version - Install

As soon as I clicked buy, I was notified that I had previously downloaded this app and that it will be downloading for free. I am kind of bummed that it took this long to get this feature, but I guess better late then never.

I do wish that in the future we get the Purchase tab like in the Mac App Store, that would be nice.

Yes I realise that! Sorry for the ? Mark it should have been rhetorical. I am speculating upon the future of all purchased Apple content.

Give them a chance, this has only been around for less than 1 day. Who's to say they aren't working on the same for the iPhone to take effect sometime soon.

It's not a software issue, the work is done at the server end, not on the device.

I think the advice is: be a little patient

Why the negative votes? They are adding features, not taking away.

Were the negative votes from Android fanboys? Why not just enjoy your device if you actually enjoy it and let others enjoy theirs?

This is good! Always find it a bit scary when I click buy, hoping I've already bought it and not had the free version ;-)
I completely agree! Why this hasn't been implemented since day one of the App Store I will never understand. Hopefully this comes to the iPhone soon.

I guess its a way for Apple to make a little extra money off of people who are unsure if they are downloading the version of the app they already purchased, when in reality it isn't the correct app. Shady way of doing things if you ask me.

Jeez christ..Took them long enough.. I bought bunch of apps and don't even remember which ones I bought after reinstalling iOS.. Was always wondering why there was never "Purchased" tab that showed apps you paid for and not currently installed on your device..

You've always been able to view your purchase history by going to your iTunes Account through iTunes, it shows paid for and free apps
