Can't say that I've seen a difference - what are you expecting? 13.5 Pro on 26.1, working with Samsung T7 SSDs here.

This is the hub for my iPad desktop setup. I have the T7 1TB and a Sandisk USB 3.0 500GB attached to it, and they both transfer files with my iPad with no problems. Redundant backups.😉

I use the exact same hub & T7 - they work great!

Well, good people. I decided to move on from my 4K portable monitor… was planning on transitioning to an OLED monitor, had my eye on that ViewSonic OLED 4K 15” monitor. And then I thought about trying out that dual ZenScreen OLED monitor. But I prefer to have a monitor to sit above the iPad.

But I couldn’t get past the thought of using a 5k monitor and how that would be nice viewing experience for the iPad, so looked around the web to see what I can find. And as much as I wouldn’t mind having the Apple Studio Display, didn’t care to spend that much money on it. So, during the holiday sales… I picked up a Samsung ViewFinity S9 5K monitor.

Still adjusting to the portable aspect of it… cause I used to move my previous monitor back and forth from my desk to the den area, need to find a case to travel with it as well. Comes with a not-so-fun (huge) charging brick… but I like the fact it charges the iPad when hooked up to it.

Here’s hoping! I do find the browser based apps (word at least) is find, might try using that over the app and see how that goes.
Yeah, I would definitely use the web version of Word if possible, as it’s definitely a bit better than the native version, though, sadly, only slightly so. But it doesn’t sound like you’re having problems with the toolset of Word on iPadOS, just the bugs with the app, and for that, the web app is probably a great solution in most cases. 👍🏻

I think you're both right.

Technically the iPad is "just" a bigger iPhone, and it does run the same operating system.

(Slapping a new label on the existing iOS when it's used on an iPad doesn't make it a different operating system, and neither do a couple of user interface features that are not available on the iPhone because they don't make sense on the small screen.)

However the iPad does have some unique features, and a lot of apps that are either iPad specific, or work so much better on an iPad and its larger display, that it does often feel and behave like its own separate thing.
I’m late to the party, and others have already made some great points about this here, but I do want to share a couple of thoughts. 👍🏻

One, the differences between iOS and iPadOS extend far beyond merely “slapping a new label on”. iPadOS is demonstrably different from iOS in many ways. For example, there are many apps that are built for iPadOS but not iOS as you even pointed out. That’s not merely a “screen size” difference, that’s a difference between the simpler iOS and more capable iPadOS and the kinds of apps that can actually be practical to use on their respective devices, or that can even work at all in the first place on them. And there are also many features (beyond mere screen scaling), that iPadOS provides that iOS does not. Like virtual memory swap, which is absent on iPhones, but present on many iPads running iPadOS. Extended Display support is another major difference. And iPadOS has default and better mouse and keyboard support. Can you hook up a mouse and keyboard to an iPhone? Technically, but it’s not nearly as good, and must be done using a buried accessibility feature. And there aren’t any system keyboard shortcuts like on iPadOS either.

There are many many examples like this I could list, where iPadOS is demonstrably different from iOS, and it goes beyond screen size…

Two, Basically all of Apple’s OSes are built on a shared framework, and are just optimized for their respective devices/platforms. But that does not mean that they’re the same device, or have the same limits in terms of software. I could literally just as easily say the iPad is a “slightly smaller MacBook” as say the “iPad is just a big iPhone”, and I would actually be more accurate with the former, as the iPad is far more aligned in functionality with the MacBook than the iPhone… And, both iOS and iPadOS are essentially a modernized version of macOS that’s gotten rid of some of the legacy frameworks and code that macOS still has (but is also beginning to transition away from). You could also claim “the iPhone’s just a big Apple Watch”, or “the Apple TV is just a big iPhone you plug into a TV”, since the software under the hood is technically similar. But that fails to consider the very obvious and big difference in use-case, and or experience these platforms offer. Do they share similar software under the hood? Of course, basically all Apple devices share very similar software at their core. But that doesn’t make x device a “bigger” version of y device, or y device a “smaller” version of x device. They are very different things when actually using them, which is why it’s basically disingenuous to claim the iPad is “just a big iPhone”.

For some reason, I find the idea of a folding phone in a spring-loaded clamp very triggering and I don't know why. o_O

It’s actually pretty solid. Hasn’t caused me any issues… when the Galaxy Fold is clamped, initially I was concerned that I couldn’t clamp it in portrait orientation.

But upon research and finding out that the iPad Mini is capable of being in the portrait orientation… I took a gamble on it, because if it wasn’t able to be placed in that alignment I would have taken it back. Swiping up and doing gestures requires access to the bottom and I didn’t want the lip of the clamp to be an issue.

Good to know. I was initially worried about the structural integrity of the phone.

Ha I’m a massive hypocrite! But after all my negatives over the years on this forum/thread I’ve just asked Santa for a new iPad!

I gave my wife my m1 iPad Pro and maybe it’s fear of missing out but for all my criticisms I do really miss having it.

I like keeping my tech pristine and maybe it’s just because the iPad is harder wearing I prefer it over my laptop

Only 20 more sleeps! 🎄🎅

Awesome! I hope you get to upgrade! 👍🏻. I upgraded from an 11” M1 to a 13” M4 earlier this year, and it’s been a really big improvement. I think you’ll like the newer iPads. 👍🏻

Has Apple ever considered releasing a squared iPad?
What do you mean by this? The iPad especially in the beginning was known for being one of the few 4:3 tablets on the market. I think a lot of the newer ones, especially the 11" tablets are not quite 4:3. But they were more squares than a lot of Android tablets.

A squared iPad would sell well. Make it something like 10:10. Android tabs feel very rectangularish and are too narrow (aside from the Samsung ultras). Im not a fan of 16:10 in a smaller tablet like 11".

I've have a MacBook Pro Retina for a year now, and quite frankly, it’s simply overkill for what I use the computer for on a daily basis. I would have been fine with a MacBook Air but elected to spend the extra cash for a nice screen.

I use writing intensive programs (Final Draft, Pages, etc), but outside from that, just do regular web browsing, music, etc.

I was curious if anyone on here had replaced their laptop with an iPad, because I am considering doing that. I'm just curious about how the keyboards work with the iPad.
I couldn't type with the iPad cover/keypad setups. I need at least a comfortably-sized portable keypad. My favorite option isn't sold anymore — the Microsoft Wedge keyboard. But a close second place is the small Apple Magic Keyboard. Bluetooth hooks up just as well with your iPad as it does to any Mac. I feel it's the best choice for regular typing/writing on any Apple device.

I haven't entirely replaced my laptop for an iPad, but I do computer training/support and my iPad, with that Microsoft Wedge keyboard, is my go-to for outside calls. If I don't have a specific need for a Windows or Mac laptop for a given job, the iPad always goes with me. I have manuals stored in it, use it for stand-alone internet access, run credit cards and email PDF invoices with it.

With Microsoft Office installed and access to various cloud storage services, I can create and deliver materials my clients need and use. Anytime I choose, which is generally, I can be running on my iPad instead of a laptop without suffering any loss of capability whatsoever.

Well, iPads have been mostly square. Even the iPad Air 11" we have now is still pretty close with it's 1.43:1 aspect ratio. The Air isn't 16:10, it's still pretty close to 4:3 and therefore square-ish. And iPads do sell well but I don't think a 1:1 tablet would mean it would sell more.

Yeah, in regards to the aspect ratio, I really like the iPad’s more 4:3 aspect ratio. A 13” iPad is very close to the same dimensions as a standard sheet of US letter paper. It just feels far more natural of an aspect ratio. Every time I see Android tablets with the 16:9 aspect ratio, I always feel they’re way too elongated and imbalanced looking. I get the pragmatic argument for doing it with a more elongated aspect ratio for video, but black bars at the top and bottom of the screen for video isn’t a major negative in my opinion. And it leaves some room on-screen for keeping the video playback controls accessible if you want. I just prefer the iPad screen aspect ratio overall, it feels much more natural. 👍🏻

It's a talking point that I often make, but I've almost always have felt like Android tablet manufacturers thought most people just wanted a portable smart tv, hence the 16:9 tablets we often saw. And I think even some of the marketing/discussion of some Android tablets reflected that too.

I do remember during the early days of the iPad vs Android tablet discussions, there would be comments about people wanting to get large SD cards in their Android tablets so they can watch movies and play emulators on them and that was harder on the iPad since it lacked an SD card slot and at the time emulators weren't allowed on the App Store. So you would have these cheaper tablets that mostly just played videos and browsed some websites and that's it.

Whereas, I do believe the iPad was at least somewhat considered more than just a portable smart tv from the start, and it was especially clear once the Apple Pencil was added. And I feel like Apple puts video watching on a lower priority with the iPad, so something like 4:3 makes sense for art, reading comics, note taking/journaling, being a smart home controller, etc.

Honestly, I think the iPhone and iPad both are horrible for video watching but for ergonomic reasons mostly, but battery life is also a reason.

I feel it's more that early android tablets were bad at pretty much everything except passive tasks like watching content. They were cheap (which was itself a consequence of so many players in the market resulting in a race to the bottom), had lacklustre specs (in part because of their low prices), lagged (due to poor specs) and lacked optimised apps (because the market for paid apps wasn't there).

And personally, I am fine with watching content on a 4:3 tablet. Like yeah, there's black bars on the top and bottom, which doesn't annoy me one bit. Heck, the Synder Cut was released in 4:3, and I guess it's great for watching old power ranger episodes on Youtube? 😛

It's also that 16:9 sucks for everything else, and it's this 4:3 ratio that's led me to continue using my iPad in the classroom since 2012. I hate 16:9 screens on laptops as well. Like do manufacturers think we only stream Netflix on our PCs and never have to type a document? 🙃

That is a really nice display! I am an ASD user but even though I love the thing I have to acknowledge that it’s not the best bang for the (two thousand) bucks.
