Keep an eye on the Saddleback facebook page. There are often used bags available for sale that are great deals. Also, on the Saddleback website the Dave's Deals page has bags with slight imperfections at a great price. The trick is to check both sites early and often to get the best choice.

I think I might just do that. I like their bags but I'm hesitant to pay the regular price for them, especially as it's difficult to say for sure if they will be practical and I will like them in person. I might get something cheaper in the mean time. I've seen a handcrafted leather bag in a local department store for the equivalent of $180. It might have to do for now.

Try buying one of their wallets to see the quality. I have several bags from other vendors and I'm selling them all. The Saddleback quality is really several notches above other vendors and they honor their warranty no matter if you are the 1st, 2nd or fourth owner of their products. I wish I had found them before wasting my money on bags from other, lesser quality vendors.
