Guy steals or buys stolen ipad, comes to public forum for advice on how to use stolen ipad, sends information to owner of stolen ipad therefore leaving paper trail....Subscribed...this should be good...

I would return the iPad to the store you purchased it from....

If it was purchased from Craigslist (or the UAE equivalent) and can't get ahold of the seller for a refund, there is not much you can do other than take the loss.

If I was the school I would ask for the iPad back. The only exception would be if the iPad was not stolen, instead it was sold as a surplus item in disposal and it was accidentally not deregistered. That is very, very unlikely.

I see the real question here is who should pay to have a stolen iPad shipped from the UAE back to it's owner in the US. Should the receiver of stolen property take the additional loss and pay for shipping, or should the victim (school) spend taxpayer money to recover it's own property?

I agree with you and well stated.

I would like to think that if the conversation between the OP and school was amicable, that the school would hopefully pay the postage to minimize the buyers loss or at least split the cost. He may have been an unwitting victim himself. Just saying. At least the school is recovering the iPad.

In the event they actually request the device back, which at this point I don't think we will ever know as I doubt the OP will come back. I would think the school would pay for the shipping to recover it. Probably cheaper than replacing it.

[MOD NOTE]
The OP has his options, there's no reason to keep this thread open as it will only devolve in to accusations and bickering.
