Really good ideas in this thread. A dev should pop in here and make some of this happen!

Except that many of the board games listed are copyrighted and thus royalities will need to be paid to the company who holds the copyrights unless they get off their duffs and do it themselves!

(BTW, I love the idea too)

My first thought was "well, for $.99 I will never have to buy another card game, plus I get checkers and chess.

Also, playing in the car with something like this will be 1,000,000x better than actual cards/checkers/chess.

Lastly it'll be interesting to see if you can pull out random pieces from the game or if you will be limited to one set at a time. I can see kids (and adults) making up new games, especially if they add dice.

Maybe they'll update it with more pieces and boards. I think it would be pretty cool if you could use your own pictures (drawn or copied from the internet or whatever) as board designs so you could make up your own games.

Anyway, I bought Monopoly for my iPod touch... what are the chances of them giving existing owners the iPad version?

Pop! Hi I'm on the dev team for GameTable (the app mentioned at the top of this thread). You guys have some GREAT ideas - many of them are definitely on our roadmap. We've also started licensing discussions with some familiar game companies - but at this point we're only planning on launching with a handful of public domain board games (chess, checkers, etc) plus a virtual deck of cards.

We've been working for on this app for a while now (back when the iPad was just a bunch of rumors) making sure the controls are super intuitive. Regarding secretive elements, we've built in gestures to "peek". For example, in the virtual deck of cards, you can slowly turn a card over to see its face (of course you'll want to hide your cards with your other hand so your opponent can't see them). In the current build, the "pass and play" method won't work - because if you tilt the iPad, all the pieces would slide to the side of the table ;) This will probably be an option (you can disable) in the final version.

Good to see some of you are as excited as we are..

Ryan

Hi Ryan
Just came across this topic/this idea for the first time, and have to admit i'm kinda excited with what you're doing here!
Yet another reason i should...(and likely will...the list is growing!) get an iPad :D
It's these sort of uses/ideas that it seems ideal for!

Sounds really cool... yours is an app I will be buying as soon as I get an iPad. Just want to throw out an idea for a hex grid board and some options to download or create icons for wargaming.

EDIT: and a dice module as well, of course. For some reason I thought dice was something you had mentioned already.

all credible boardgames are copyright. things like monopoly, sorry, life, ect and so forth cant be made without paying out the nose. so unless you can magically come up with a board game nobody has never heard of and doesnt suck i wouldnt bet on any board games that are not created by their copyright owners

chess might be ok though. its like hundreds of years old

Untrue. As already mentioned, there are all the classics: chess, checkers, go, backgammon, chinese checkers... hardly games one wouldn't consider "credible".

What about new games?

There are an unlimited number of games "yet to be invented" that could work on the iPad. Plus, someone should go back and check the archives. I get there are a lot of old milton-bradley / parker bros. games that didn't succeed as a traditional board game, but might have a concept worth resurrecting for the iPad.

Also, I think you could augment a lot of regular games with an iPad. It's been many years since I played D&D, but I could imagine a lot of uses for an ipad to keep track of a campaign & players, etc. draw the map, etc.

We've submitted Game Table to be included in this Saturday's grand opening of the iPad App Store. Game Table runs great in the iPad simulator and we think it looks awesome! We've just published some in-app screenshots of Game Table on the website: http://www.gametableapp.com/

Nice! I also really like the price, only 99 cents. I think I will buy it when I get my ipad.

I recently read that you may be able to use your iPhone and iPod Touch as controllers for the central iPad game you're playing - eg: entering moves in a strategy game.

Now that sounds promising! Can you imagine all the possibilities?

I kept wondering how scrabble would ever be able to be multiplayer on one iPad, this would be a great option. No one sees my tiles!

Will definitely be picking this up on Saturday if Westfarms kept my reservation. :D

Hasbro already has several of its classic games on the iPad. Scrabble stands out as the gameboard is the iPad and the players racks can be up to four iPod Touches, iPhones or even iPads connected via Bluetooth.
