I wonder if my old ipod dock connector to USB is the exact same thing and will also work with the iPad:

I got one too. Hope it works!

Yes, but this isn't an older iPod, its an oversized Touch. And, like the iPhone, you can't use it as a mass storage device. So, just dragging PDFs into a iPad icon isn't going to happen, not unless Apple lets you drag-and-drop these PDFs into iTunes. He'll have to do it over WiFi (like what is done with Airsharing and the like) most likely.

It has been reported that there is a shared folder feature of the iPad that works like the old iPods. I'm sure if you search the forums you'll find references to it. This is one of the differences between the iPhone/iPod Touch and the iPad. This will make it much easier to work with apps like iWork.

I'm not sure I understand your logic here. Aren't many of the people that need to get pictures out quickly actually shooting jpegs. As far as I understand it:

I still don't get this no support for CF cards bit. The connection kit comes with 2 dongles. One is for SD and the other is USB. A card reader may or may not work in the USB but certainly your camera will. That is why it is called a CAMERA connection kit! I don't usually connect up my camera but I have done it before and if it is one that is CF, I will just carry the camera's USB cable with me.

If a pro needs to send back files in a hurry, I am pretty sure they are sending back jpegs. That should be a piece of cake on the iPad. At the very least you can load them up to mobile me and have the people at home copy them down.

Why is everyone making this so hard to think about?

I do some pro photography and never shoot RAW. On the CF cards, for some reason they seem to be phasing out. I don't know if that's because of customers shifting to the smart cards or because the industry decided to go that way, but it is the way it's going.

On not including the SD card slot, that's probably a decision based on the premise that most people wouldn't use it. I strongly suspect a USB port would have been extremely popular.

I remember - but I'm saving that for a post of his mine that at least makes sense. Those are becoming harder and harder to find, though.

Since the majority of your posts consist of nonsense:

And OSX users can't read exFAT volumes - the portable option for large files/drives.

What's that? OSX users can read exFAT volumes?

His usual backpedalling:

Why try to find third party ports of an antiquated filesystem, when all I need to do is wrong-click on "Format"?

Clockwork.

The next gen iPad should have the front cam built in, unless we get screwed once again

The existing 'space' for a front-facing camera does offer a glimmer of hope for the immediate future.

Let it be Wi-Fi only then, if 3G concerns have been responsible for delaying it for round one.

You beat me too it, it also says that once the connection is made the Photo app open automatically, I wonder if it does this by default, due to a chip in the adaptor that apple has been using now in most adaptors.

You may have hit on why the old iPod camera adaptor won't work - no chip, just like why old iPod chargers won't work on iPhones and iPod touches.

I am glad I am not paying for a "feature" I wont use. Also glad that there wont be another point of contact to collect dust/moisture by there being no SD/USB slot.

.

The only reason they made it an adapter, is because they can milk you for money, just like the use of a non standard sim card (only found in childrens gps watches). They make you locked in and pay them. Good forbid you actually changed to a cheaper and better phone company... but then apple wouldn't get to milk you on the data...

Is that the story in the US? Shame. I live in the UK. Several phone comapanies are bringing in Micro SIM cards. The UK version of the Apple website says that in order to get 3G working on your iPad, contact companies and find a good deal. In other words, I can go and get one of these MicroSIM cards from any of the carriers who happen to sell them, and stick it in my iPad, and Apple don't make a penny.

You're also forgetting that a typical sim card in your iPhone can be used in the iPad if you cut it correctly.

I agree with you here. I'm planning on using my iPad to take along on trips instead of my laptop. I want to off load pics and videos from my cameras, play with them a little and then off load it to the cloud.

I've been working on an app for the 'play with them a little' part of that. It should be available on launch day, and free until I get all the kinks worked out.

Personally, I think it's pretty criminal that a device like this doesn't come with an SD card slot and usb (host) port.
I'm also surprised there's not a front facing camera. I would have thought the marketing potential alone would have been worth including one, even if no one ever used it.

Any developper out there working on a remote shooting app for DSRL cameras? Or is this is doable only by Canon or any other camera manufacturer?

I don't know about Canon, but I believe Nikon is pretty open about how to remotely control their DSLRs. It would be a fantastic use for an iPad. I'm not sure how locked down the framework is for dealing with peripherals though, it may or may not be doable.

Please feel free to correct me if I'm mistaken, I don't have an iPhone...but I do have an iPod touch... My USB charging cable for the touch connects to the base of the ipod and has a standard male USB at the end to plug into my computer... with the iPad Camera kit USB dongle it gives the iPad a USB female port that my standard charging cable can connect to... no new wires... is it different for the iPhone?

hmmm... you may be right. Hope so.

Yeah, I'm glad the iPad has very little connectivity.

And just why does this irritate me so much? (I know, I know, sjobs is just gonna cry himself to sleep over my opinion) Because I remember the early days of handheld computing when manufacturers all had their own proprietary dock connector instead of all using the same industry standard. Palm in particular shone with a new "universal, and future-proof" jack every damn year. But there was also HP with their camera connector for a HP camera only, and Toshiba with their SD slot that only worked with their own brand of memory cards.

Jailbraking anyone?

I can't wait to see someone jailbreak this worthless POS so that it can finally be used as a real computer rather then a "Mommy tells me I can only use the dock connector to copy photos, but I can't copy any documents or music to it"...

You can always vote with your wallet and not buy one; instead by a different POS from Acer or Dell, or whomever.

Alright, so I'm thinking I might get the standard dock (no keyboard) so that I can use the wireless keyboard... I know the dock has one port to connect either VGA out, or, the camera kit...

Does anybody happen to know of (I looked online without success) if there is a splitter cable which would allow me to take the one port and connect both devices at once? I'm not really thinking desktop or laptop replacement here, but I'd rather not have to constantly be connecting/unconnecting from a monitor every time I want to import pictures so either a dock solution with 2 ports, or a splitter...

I figure this is consistent with the current discussion of the camera kit as it explores use for the accessory, I apologize if anyone feels this isn't keeping in line with the topic of the forum.
