What I'm wondering is if I can use the USB connector to connect a compact flash or memory stick card reader and it still read the pictures on it. I've got multiple cameras and generally use a card reader to transfer my pics.
If it works anything like the ipod camera adapter then yes.

Same here. I just bought a new camera that uses MemoryStick and need to import using a card reader, esp. since I can't seem to find the cable anymore (it should be here someplace...).

I disagree. Many people use cameras whose capabilities far exceed that of a cell phone camera or webcam. The idea that I could use my iPad while traveling to work on RAW format photos from my digital SLR is very appealing to me.

that's not what he is saying. He's saying why didn't they just integrate an sd-card reader in the iPad instead of making a dongle?

I agree with you here. I'm planning on using my iPad to take along on trips instead of my laptop. I want to off load pics and videos from my cameras, play with them a little and then off load it to the cloud.

I think I would just rather buy a more powerful slate that costs less money and has USB ports and an SD Card slot.

I second the notion of just having the USB or micro card reader just built into the darn thing.

On another note, does anyone know if we will be able to use these adaptors to transfer files onto and off the iPad (or just photos?). Nevertheless if you can't transfer non-photo files via this adaptor, this is nothing a little jailbreakage couldn't fix.

This is ok. There will be so many other accessories coming out that its probably better to wait. The case by apple for example did not get great reviews. The engineering is interesting but the materials suck. A good template though if those greedy punks didnt copyright it.

I hope Apple or 3rd party will come out with a similar connection kit for Compact Flash cards. Although I could use the USB adaptor to transfer photos directly from my Canon 7D, it would be more ideal to have a dedicated CF adaptor. File transfers via USB tend to suck the life from the camera's battery. Also, although the specs for the camera connection kit doesn't mention video, it would be a cool bonus feature if this connection kit would allow us to import videos shot with P&S and DSLR cameras. I would prefer to bring the iPad to photo/video shoots for previewing what I'm shooting, rather than lug around my notebook.

...

what a farce that they charge $30 for something that should have been built in in the first place. Honestly Apple will be better off if they sell LESS of these things because the more they sell the more people they will be pissing off with the nickel and diming who will then turn back to windows platform

The iPad must have a standard USB port to share files with USB pendrives and for USB remote controls for PowerPoint presentations.

Yes, I'll agree I hate adapters and accessories, I would've paid extra to have it built-in in a heartbeat.

The thing is starting to look like a Xbox 360 with all the extras and accessories to buy... ok, maybe it's not that bad yet (I love my 360, so don't even go there).

Uh, no he wasn't. He specifically said that they should've integrated a CAMERA into it, not an SD card reader. Both of you need a reading lesson since the camera kit isn't actually a camera, and thus integrating the items discussed in this thread wouldn't solve that deficiency.

While I too think it's stupid that they didn't include some of these features, but I just love listening to people tell companies how they should've designed their products. Speak with your wallets by not buying it instead of pouting like you were on the design team and nobody would listen to you.

I don't see people using the iPad as a Camera. That's what people have Cell Phones or actual Cameras for. I could see a forward facing video cam for chat/conferencing being useful.

Every camera these days does video, so it would seem very idiotic if you buy this to find out you can't empty you memory card fully because the video is left behind.

Though, since the iPad has little space to handle multiple 16gb cards with HD video, after transferring your photos and video to the ipad, can you then connect a usb drive to transfer it off the iPad? Plus still view the files off said drive? On trips, I hate bringing my laptop just to transfer photos off. I can bring multiple cards to take photos, but when you shoot HD, they all fill up fast.

wow. I'm not telling them how to design their product. I'm just not going to buy it because I don't want to buy an adapter to import photos. Plus, RAW photos imported onto the 16gb iPad would fill up pretty quick, I probably wouldn't have any space for any photos.

Last time I checked this was a rumors forum. People can complain about anything they want to. That's the point of the forum.

Can that USB port be utilized in other ways?

I'm wondering? People complain "The iPad doesn't have a USB port" but if this connection kit has a Apple Dock port to USB connecter, then couldn't that USB port conceivably be used for other peripherals? I understand Apple might have to implement some sort of drivers system, but that would be cool. Imagine being able to plug an external hardrive right into this thing via USB.

I doubt it... maybe when the iPad becomes jailbreak-able and developers start making unofficial software for it

That's exactly what I was thinking- I still have my iPod Photo Camera Adapter, but I doubt it. Apple is known for dropping support for older accessories- which is why I have tons of white cables/docks that are useless. I'm still pissed that I can't use firewire to charge my iPod, if I needed to!

Agreed!

I have 2 usb ports on my mac which everything is fighting to use, then there is my poor firewire port which is always empty unless I decide to be retro and use my old 2nd gen ipod.

My can't I use my new ipods/iphone via firewire? I prefer firewire it's faster, I hope they put more ports in the new mac pros (if they ever come out) because using a USB hub is fugly.

Definitely getting it. It will be handy to be able to upload the photos from my camera to iPad while on shorter trips.

This is no big deal having to wait even 3 weeks. There are so many ways to get images onto the iPad the lack of having direct transfer ability is not going to slow me down much. Even as a frequent traveler I am not going to switch right away to the ipad as my sole computing source.
