Funny. I can't remember when MS marketed the Surface as an iPad killer.
It was always put up against the MacBook Air / MacBook.
Because. You know. It's a fully functional laptop that can also be a tablet.
Best of both worlds with the restrictions of neither.

You are right, but in the beginning, some people were referring to it as the 'iPad killer'.

AND Microsoft was touting it as a 'tablet', until I guess people saying a tablet doesn't 'need' a keyboard, and they 'adjusted' their marketing...

Still, I tried one at a Microsoft kiosk in Manhattan, and really couldn't get the reason, the 'vibe', the 'Gestalt' of the thing. Maybe it was the Windows 8 thing, but I kept thinking 'YUCK!'...

Next innovation is to put a folder inside a folder!

But but but...

It's like why, if I click on 'Now playing' on my iPhone I see the current playing song, and yet when I touch the song that's playing, it restarts from the beginning of the song. Whisky tango foxtrot...

Well, I guess I'm bucking the trend. I just got a 128 gb 9.7" iPad Pro, trading in my old iPad Air. With the increased storage, the iPad now becomes a viable content creation tool for me, whereas before it was merely a content consumption tool.
So just increased storage makes.it a creation tool,.how so?

Previously, I couldn't work on HD video projects, create a soundtrack for them and export them all on the device. I'd have to offload something onto my desktop in order to keep working. Even 64 gb devices weren't adequate. Now I can have multiple projects in progress and not worry about running out of room.

Wow, even in my wildest dreams I wouldn't consider video editing and music creation on anything other than than a desktop with a big screen and a proper keyboard/mouse combo. Seems like you enjoy making things hard for yourself..

Not at all. It's just a different workflow. Obviously it's easier to stay in my comfort zone and use the tools I've been using for years. But even though the iPad has its limitations, it also has some advantages. For instance, Garage Band on the iPad is phenomenal. iMovie is also pretty impressive. And the iPad is a lot more portable than my desktop.

Yes, the Amazon delta is bogus. Since when is the Fire HD 6 not a tablet? It is not a phone, and it is not just an e-reader.

Cost to manufacture 15M iPads @ $169/ea = $2.535b. Revenue @ $649 = $9.735b. Net = $7.2b
Cost to Manufacture 20M IPads @ $169/ea = $3.380b. Revenue @ $529 = $10.58b. Net = $7.2b

Funny how that works. And that assumes that a 18% drop will result in a 33% increase in sales. Personally, I doubt it.

I actually just ordered a SP4. As much as an Apple lover that I am, I can't see me spending $600 for the entry model of the 9.7 (which of course is not the amount of storage that I need... I'd need to spend another $200) when it's still using a mobile OS... And Pen not included... Especially since I just bought the 6S+ A few months ago. The very few things that the iPad Pro can do over my iPhone do not warrant that cost at all.

So I splurged on a mid-end SP4 (i7/8gb ram 256gb storage) because I was in need of a tablet because lugging my MBP was killing me. And who knows... Depending on how much I like the SP4 I may just end up selling my MBP

I hope it works for you, I really do. I tried the SP2 and the SP3. Now I have an iPad Pro and it is what allowed me to sell my MacBook Pro.
