Normally I'd say you were wrong...if a store clerk gives you the wrong change you should bring it up.

But in this case you offered a price and he accepted. It's up to him to look up the retail value and decide if it's worth it. Either he did and was ok with that price or he didn't in which case that's his fault.

You're fine UNLESS you're leaving out a part of the story where you told him it was an iPad 1 and only worth that much and he should sell it quickly 'cause the second version is out already. In that case you'd be wrong. But if you only thought that and didn't say it out loud then it's not your problem.

I agree with Small White Car, as long as "you gave all the details". You also did not know for sure if it worked!
You made an offer and he accepted...

It's simple, just mention it without really giving him a big window to ask for more money or to ask it back. Just be like "oh, hey dude. You know that iPad turned out to be the new one? Yeah, it's pretty slick, i'm really loving it, put all my stuff on there and everything. Thanks again man!"

This way you let him know, but don't really let him ask for it back without guilt.

let's look at the flip side of the coin for a moment. what if the seller knew what he had (as the OP said that he was the one who thought it was a 1st gen)
and just decided to sell it for whatever reason. perhaps he had one already, wasn't a fan of Apple products, or just needed the money.
the Op's sense of ethics and morality is what's bothering him (guilty conscience probably) so in order to feel better with himself (which is why he's here asking this question) he should confront the seller and come clean, perhaps offer more cash or possibly haggle for another price, whichever makes him feel better.

Well

I explained to the lad at work that it was an ipad 2, we both agreed that as we didnt know prior to the purchase we would leave it as £250.

As it turned out, he was cool ,he was happy to have sold it and that it saved him the hassle of ebay.

That was a relief all round.

Ps - the ipad is amazing!

I think most people would have been very happy to sell at a discount to friend/co-worker with cash in hand. EBay can be such a hassle with fees, shipping and the buyer could be a scammer. Win/win situation for both of you.

The iPad IS amazing, and magical !

No worries on this!

If this were a friend or someone I associated with at work I'd feel really bad about taking advantage of someone. If he ever finds out the truth there would be hurt feelings for sure. My first instinct is to be honest and tell him it's an iPad2 but at the same time I'd be happy to have it for the price you paid.

He're is what I suggest. Maybe in a week or so you can tell him you "just noticed" that this was an iPad2. Maybe you aren't that well versed and didn't know the difference ;) ;)

Tell him now that it's used it probably has lost some of the original value. Offer to split the difference between what you paid and what a used one is selling for. Offer to pay in installments. He's getting more than he originally had and you're not going to deal with any guilt. I'm assuming there was guilt or something there or why else would you post the question here.

EDIT - Oh, I just read that you already spoke with him. I only scanned the 1st page. That works too. Glad you were honest about it. I believe in Karma so it was truly a good thing you did.

Suggestion:

Since you would be satisfied if it was just a iPad 1, sell the iPad 2 and use 250 to buy an iPad 1 and keep it. Spend the rest of the money on something else or even buy lunch for that guy.

D you want to buy a watch?

Yes, I have $35 to spend.

I will sell you a watch for $35.

Seems legal to me. You paid for an iPad and received an iPad....not your fault he was more interested in being rid of it. No guilt, no problem...and as for those on the moral high horse...I'm a guy who does give back change errors, etc. In this case, it's up to the seller to research.

My bigger concern would be, is the iPad stolen. Who gets a brand new iPad, doesn't have any idea what I is, doesn't google it, and sells it for a price the buyer sets? Typically, a thief.
