If I had an iPad2, I would either return it now for a refund and wait, or get an assurance that I can return my iPad at a later date.

Come next spring when iPad3 comes out and iPad2's are up for sale on the second hand market, who's going to want to buy "one of the early ones" when they can buy one of these later ones?

Early iPad2's could well be worth a lot less in the future due to this.

Makes sense, given that LG also manufacturer's the display on the iMac's (and some have complained about that screen).

At least they are consistent.;)

I don't really know why Apple use LG.

LG have never been a premium brand when it comes to their own TV's. They are generally well priced, and have some neat features, but they are not ever really regarded as the one to go for if you want the best quality.

I have minor light leakage, but not enough that I cared to return it, especially since it seems like it was russian roulette the next one they gave you would be better -- could be worse.

But I'm curious -- is there a way from the serial# or some diagnostic mode who made the panel I have in mine?

I am in the same boat, but with dust. I found a piece of dust under my screen the other night. I probably could get an exchange, but I don't trust Apple's refurbs anymore. The exchange could have dead pixels, more dust, light leak, or cosmetic problems. (My iPhone 4 exchanges ALL had cosmetic damage on them, including the one I finally just kept and decided to live with.)

I will live with it. I do not want to get into the OCD exchange cycle. You can't see the dust when the screen is on, only when it's off, and it's barely noticeable.

But... But... I thought this leakage was normal, and not a problem. At least, that's what some fanboys said here. Where are they now?

If it interferes with your normal use, it's a problem. If you have to do a special test just to find out if it's happening or not, it's not a problem.

My ipad 2 that i picked up a couple of days ago from a 3 store seems fine in terms of light leakage. Only problem is the white plastic is detached from the glass at the top left and i can push it in. I can also push the glass panel down slightly at the bottom right because the glue hasn't stuck properly. Wonder if I should take it back. Only problem is with it not being an apple store im willing to bet theyd be reluctant to swap it for me.

Yeah I'd return that in a heartbeat.

Does anyone have a good description of the issue?
My iPad 2 has a very visible amber/yellow glow along the long left side where the smart cover magnets attach.

The amber/yellow glow is distinctly visible in low-light conditions, while watching a letter-boxed movie with the iPad 2 in landscape. Where there should be a dark border, I see the amber/yellow light leaking out from the edge--but only on the edge where the smart cover attaches.

So is that what the light leakage looks like or does everybody's iPad 2 have that problem?

Yes, that is the issue.

Has any one be able to get a replacement iPad 2 do to this issue?
For the most part on my iPad 2 i did not notice this issue until I viewed some photos and a movie that did not take up the whole screen. There is definite light leakage and can be really annoying watching a movie in a dark room.
It has that same issue as another owner posted:

Great way of putting it. I was playing Infinity Blade when I first noticed the light leakage on my iPad 2. I wasn't looking for it however it did stand out. Was only minor though. In normal everyday usage I can't even tell it's there. I probably won't go through the hassle of returning mine as like others have said, theres no guarantee the next one will be better. And I don't have time to waste returning my iPad over and over again. More or less a very minor issue as my iPad functions the way I intended it to, and the light leakge isn't noticeable in normal everyday use.

My first iPad 2 had the light leak issue. I noticed it the second I turned it on. I exchanged it a week and a half later at Apple retail for a brand new, sealed retail unit. Took it home, light bleed was worse.

Brought it back a couple weeks later, and the Genius brought out one of the brown-box models (not sure if it could have been a refurb; they've not been out long enough). Before removing the plastic cover, he turned it on, and took it into a dark break room to test it. He called me back to confirm, and I went home happy.

The people at the genius bar were trying to pass it off as the "glue drying" issue, but that's probably what they were told to say.

In any case, I got a replacement and I'm happy; the Genius Bar was helpful. I did express that I'd be willing to wait for a good unit, and not keep burning through replacements...FWIW.

Finally some real information on the light bleed being a problem. I will wait a few more months then exchange mine and my wife's.

The iFollowers are right here, didn't you read all the posts above yours?
We both know that these people are the ones who would mock and ridicule any other company for their poor build quality if something like this surfaced, but when it's Apple it's perfectly acceptable all of a sudden.
I thought Apple was supposed to be premium quality, not just acceptable

Apple hasn't been about the best quality hw since the 90's. Ever since Jobs came back and brought Tim Cook into the company, Cook switched strategy to always go for the most profitable option, which means the cheapest alternative combined with PR working hard to maintain the image that Apple is the best quality available and charging premium for that.

Great now maybe I can finally get my ipad from Bestbuys that I have reserved soon

I would take it back im sure you have 14 days to take it back to 3,i had a ipad 1 and it had a gap at the top that didnt bother me until i could see dust getting in on the lcd screen, from a house that isnt dusty it botherd me...When i went into the Apple Store i noticed that some white ipads had gaps between the screen and the plastic but the black ones didnt....

I got my black iPad 2 on launch day and I've yet to see this problem on mine. Maybe I just got lucky...

Not many manufacturers out there that produce IPS displays out there and especially in such a volume that LG is capable of.

Yes LG has had issues with their panels especially with previous 27 inch iMacs.

AFAIK, LG makes IPS for Dell as well along with Apple Cinema Displays.

Samsung on the other hand are known for VA or Vertical Alignment panels which are very good as well but IPS is still considered at the top of the panel chain.

Mine leaked too. There was a faint but noticeable glow about a quarter of one of the long sides, and a smaller but more pronounced glow by the button, and bits in the corners. Most of the time you couldn't see them, but you could definitely see it when the screen was black like when watching letterboxed movies - kind of like if you start getting distracted by the dim lighting in the aisles at a theater for people who need to walk around during the movie, it ain't that bad, but once you notice it ...

It never interfered with anything, it just bugged. This device is all about the screen - that's pretty much all it is. It shouldn't do that.

It's been at apple for a couple of days now awaiting replacement. They were quite good about it and promised i wouldn't have the same problem again.

Question:

I bought the iPad 2 on launch day... I brought it to the Apple Store the next day because it had major light leak and they basically did a return and a new purchase and got me a new one... This one has the light leak problem which is mega noticeable when you're watching a movie in the dark...Though not as bad..

These units have some kind of warranty... If I wait a little while for the LG units to go away and bring it to an Apple store will they give me a new Samsung unit or am I hosed?

Really the only good thing about this news if it is true, is that the iPad 3 won't have this issue. Thankfully my current iPad only has a minor backlight issue that is not a problem for me. It's only visible at max brightness in a dark room, and so I am happy with mine. Considering both the first gen and 2nd gen had this issue though, it's about time they get it right.

Hmm...on one hand, I still don't have my iPad 2 as I've been waiting forever (F@%K U Best Buy) but on the other hand, it's nice they caught this "problem" so whenever I ultimately get mine, it hopefully won't have this issue.

Yeah Best Buy doesn't have squat. When I bought my iPad two days ago I called all the electronic/phone stores I can think of and only Fry's Electronics had the model (64+3G+black) that I was looking for. Target also had a few but most were the 64+3G+white model.

I have a very small amount of light leaking near the volume buttons but since I can only see it in very specific contexts, I really dont mind.

Sooooooo happy with my iPad2...I use it way more than I thought I would!

I'll probably get mine sooner or later this month. Can I keep it for now and later on (let's say about 2 months from now) get a replacement without paying anything if I have those issues?
