The first looked cool, but I didn't need it.

The second one was so effing sexy, and while I still didn't need it but I did want it. A year of apps that were designed for made it so compelling.

The third one looks amazing but it really doesn't matter. After sitting the first 2 out I would have preordered site unseen if I could have. I still don't need it, but it will be mine.

:D Have to admit I'm in the same boat.

There are things the iPad won't do that I wish it would (like playing Amazon's Instant Video).

But, the fact is that I just plain want an iPad! And, I'm sure once I have one it'll become part of my life. I hesitated on the iPod because I already had an MP3 player. ;) Then, I bought the Classic & saw what all the fuss was about. I waited on the iPod Touch because the Classic worked just fine. Then, I bought a 3rd generation iTouch & WOW!

I'm confident I'll feel the same way about the iPad. I just waited till I couldn't resist any longer.

The 'New iPad' will be my first iPad and quite looking forward to getting it although I am still in two minds about keeping it but after using my friends iPad 2 I was quietly impressed by it.

Got the '4G' version for use in the UK and got 12 months worth of free internet for £10 so if that works it will be a very cheap way of surfing the net etc when away from home.

This is my first iPad. The reason I skipped over all previous 2 iterations is due to lack of retina on iPad 2 and wait and see on iPad 1.

What is your reason for getting the iPad for the first time with iPad

This is my first iPad as well, pretty much for the same reason you just posted. I wasn't too sure about the first iPad - if it would be "accepted" and supported. With the 2 I was REALLY hoping for a higher resolution screen, and when I found out it's the same res as the first, I decided to wait, again.

3rd time's the charm!

I would have bought the iPad 2 except after having the iPhone 4 for 6 months, seeing the pixels on the iPad 2 drove me crazy! Because I plan to do a lot of reading, pix-elated words would be very distracting for me. I said I would wait until the iPad had a higher rez screen before purchasing, and now it is here.

Exactly the same situation with me. the iPhone 4's display ruined me on other screens. I'm also telling myself that I won't get a new laptop till we have a retina option....we'll see if that happens anytime soon...

Also the same reason why I haven't upgraded my Black MacBook 2.4Ghz, from early 2008. It serves me well for what I need. When there is a major update to the MacBook Pro lineup or when the SSD in the 13" Air becomes 500gig standard, I'll consider replacing. So it's gonna be a while for me, but I'm okay with that :). The new iPad should hold me over for a while.

Haha, basically same reasoning for me.

iPad 1: Will this catch on? Will it even be worth it, considering I have a pretty lightweight laptop?
iPad 2: What?? No retina display?!

If I'm going to use a device primarily for web browsing, reading ebooks, and some gaming - it better have a fantastic screen for me to look at instead of just using my laptop.

Pretty excited about having the new iPad: I haven't needed a laptop beyond word processing and music production for a while, and I spent 90% of my computer use simply reading articles, communicating on forums, etc.

I'm wondering if the iPad will be able to replace paper, and be the only thing I bring to class. I plan on getting a nice stylus and note-taking app to at least attempt, because it seems like I could easily store/organize my notes with this thing.

Also, that Infinity Blade Dungeons debut looked awesome! Looks like a Diablo that utilizes touch-controls in a unique way. I haven't done any significant mobile gaming with my iPhone or since a Gameboy, but I do remember seeing someone using their iPad on a flight to Hawaii and I was pretty jealous.

Anyway, the screen is what sold me - it could have been the only upgrade, and I might have still bought it.

Also, I didn't buy 4G because I already have an iPhone with 3G that is basically only used for Maps and quick references, and if I really want I can always jailbreak and tether. My laptop doesn't have mobile internet - so why should my iPad? Do people really walk around in non-WiFi spots with their iPads out, actually utilizing that mobile internet?

I was not very aware of the first iPad when it came out and I really couldn't see much use for tablet when I had a laptop and an iPod.

I've been putting off buying the iPad 2 for many months because I bought an iphone 4 and a wacom cintiq shortly after it was released and could not justify spending any more money on techology. Then when I went to purchase an iPad 2 from a local store they turned out to not have any 3G Black 16GB versions in-stock. By the time I was looking again there was only 2 months until the expected announcement of a third generation so I thought I might as well wait. Also my grandparents are giving me the money as an early graduation present... so no reason not to.

So my reasons:

I'm travelling a lot more now so it is much easier to carry an iPad than a 17" laptop on a train journey.
It will be great for watching movies on-the-go and much easier to read books and comics on than my little iPhone screen.
I have enough money to stretch to the 32GB 4G version now.
I can use it to dictate notes (hopefully).
I just want one (and the experience of waiting outside the apple store overnight).

Skipped iPad 1 due to budget reasons.
Skipped iPad 2 because its screen didn't compare well to the iPhone 4's retina screen.
Went with the iPad 3 because I can afford one, and it has a high-resolution screen. I would have skipped this one as well if it had the same 1024x768 screen. After all, it's mostly a toy/convenience thing since I have an iPhone and iMac already.

(I can see adding a MBA at some point in the future if Apple releases a 13.3" version with, say, 1920x1200 pixels, and a version of OSX to support resolution independence. That's 170 dpi compared to the current 13" MBA's 127 dpi. 170 dpi would be "retina" at 20.2" viewing distance.)
