wow surprised that theres that much open space in there.
Very interesting.
They just took the iPod Touch logic card and mounted it behind a big display and then filled in most of the empty space with batteries.

The US government doesn't mandate than industry must use imperial units. It's just that the US government hasn't mandated the use of metric units. Individual groups, etc. can use metric units as desired. For practical purposes, most industries have stayed with the old system because they haven't been forced to change. Not that this has anything to do with the iPad, but the reports on the FCC has measurements in metric - thought USA was still imperial users?
LOTS O ROOM for expansion!
I can see them putting the SD slot on the side and cameras for front and back.
I really wish people weren't salivating for them just so Apple would lower the price by $100 or offer the 3G one for the same price since you have to pay extra for the service anyways...

There's really not. The edges have to accommodate the display assembly frame, which fits into the shallow space left at the margins, along with the tapered back. Not much will fit there except various antennae. The gap is not in a location to facilitate a camera, a USB port, and SD card slot, or anything of any particular interest. Just room for more logic board.wow surprised that theres that much open space in there.
The top center backside of the display still shows the mount backside. Pictures don't show the front of the frame at all, where the depression for the camera mount is/was. It's probably still there. For some reason the site is broken for me and won't let me download the PDFs. Does anyone see if the camera hole is in the frame like those leaked pics from awhile back?
What else were you expecting? Have you ever seen the inside of a MacBook? Take out the fans, battery, optical drive, and hard drive and you're left with a very small logic board, proportionally about the same as what's in the iPad.Not much else in there eh? no wonder Apple said they could sell these for cheaper if the market dictated. They're gonna make a killing on this thing.
All quite true, but that small gap in the deeper part of the case is also undoubtedly where the 3G hardware goes. It's not swimming in empty space by any stretch of the imagination. The photo where everyone exclaims about how spacious it is, well, remember that the space could be filled with the backpane of the screen. It's really hard to tell if that is wasted space for future upgrades or merely a consequence of the teardown. Also the case is curved, so the usable space may be far less than you think. Weight and balance is a concern too...
The logic board is both taller and far wider than what's in the iPod touch. See the photo. This is about 1.5" by 5", plus a long extension arm in an L shape. The iPod logic board is about 1" by a little over 2"This take the argument that the iPad is an oversized iPod Touch to a new level...hell it even seems like it uses the Touch logic board.

The FCC site had the chips covered.... gotta love acrobat image export though....![]()
It isn't what I see that is interesting but the negative space, the open areas. That is a lot of void space inside the iPad... Future expansion.
Do you quantify the value of hardware based on the amount of electronics inside?![]()
It's not. It's not. etc. It's the fricken ambient light sensor.
You can see the dual speakers in several of the photos. They're the two round shapes in the plastic piece next to the lower (unlabeled) battery pack in the photos. Can anyone tell where the speakers are? I'm wondering what kind of sound it will produce?
Who thinks they can find USB pinouts (via the 30 pin at least) and solder them to a SD reader? Maybe the guts of the camera connection kit? Make all that internal? heh heh The hard part will be opening it, thats for sure.
Clean.
Still doesn't incline me to buy one, though. Version two for me!
go to a cheaper restaurant, do you own taxes/legal/medical work and build your own computer (or let dell do it)
The US government doesn't mandate than industry must use imperial units. It's just that the US government hasn't mandated the use of metric units. Individual groups, etc. can use metric units as desired. For practical purposes, most industries have stayed with the old system because they haven't been forced to change.
For example, some sports (track & field, swimming) have changed to international metric measurements as well as certain industries (wine bottles are 750mL and some other beverages are offered in 1L and 2L containers). For consumer electronics, most are manufactured in Southeast Asia, so providing design specifications in metric measurements is not out of the ordinary.
This is why the service economy sucks. I'm fine with cooking for myself, doing my own taxes, building my own computer, and I've never needed any legal work I haven't been able to carry out myself. As for medical work, I'm glad for the technical service of doctors - I'm not going to operate on myself - but why wouldn't I investigate my own problems as much as I can?
An elective ten minute appointment with any doctor is pointless: if your appointment is only taking ten minutes, you're either making a habit of wasting your and your doctor's time on something trivial or the doctor's not spending enough time investigating the problem.

If you look at the teardown, the ambient light sensor is clearly visible to the left of the center mount on the top bezel (shown top left in the "back of display" FCC photo).
