Not that this has anything to do with the iPad, but the reports on the FCC has measurements in metric - thought USA was still imperial users?
The US government doesn't mandate than industry must use imperial units. It's just that the US government hasn't mandated the use of metric units. Individual groups, etc. can use metric units as desired. For practical purposes, most industries have stayed with the old system because they haven't been forced to change.

For example, some sports (track & field, swimming) have changed to international metric measurements as well as certain industries (wine bottles are 750mL and some other beverages are offered in 1L and 2L containers). For consumer electronics, most are manufactured in Southeast Asia, so providing design specifications in metric measurements is not out of the ordinary.

LOTS O ROOM for expansion!

I can see them putting the SD slot on the side and cameras for front and back.

I really wish people weren't salivating for them just so Apple would lower the price by $100 or offer the 3G one for the same price since you have to pay extra for the service anyways...

Then there wouldn't need to be a WiFi only one if they were the same cost because the service is optional.

I question your math skills, as well as awareness of reality. Or maybe you weren't paying any attention at all. It's an unsubsidized, non-contract radio, something that isn't easily available in the US market, never mind at the prices offered. I priced out competing service for netbooks from VZW and they wanted at least twice as much. $40 for 250 MB, $60 for 5GB. I'd say $15 for 250 and $30 for 5GB through AT&T/iPad is a much better deal, especially without a contract. You could pay back the cost of the radio in just over four months vs. Verizon's netbook plans. I don't get why this is so hard for people to understand.

Wow I have never seen so much unused space in an Apple device. They could have crammed in so many other features if they wanted to.

This take the argument that the iPad is an oversized iPod Touch to a new level...hell it even seems like it uses the Touch logic board.

wow surprised that theres that much open space in there.
There's really not. The edges have to accommodate the display assembly frame, which fits into the shallow space left at the margins, along with the tapered back. Not much will fit there except various antennae. The gap is not in a location to facilitate a camera, a USB port, and SD card slot, or anything of any particular interest. Just room for more logic board.

As for the gap near the logic board, it's a lot smaller than it looks--about 1" by 1.25" of usable space, mostly or entirely filled on the 3G model by the 3G radio and GPS hardware.
For some reason the site is broken for me and won't let me download the PDFs. Does anyone see if the camera hole is in the frame like those leaked pics from awhile back?
The top center backside of the display still shows the mount backside. Pictures don't show the front of the frame at all, where the depression for the camera mount is/was. It's probably still there.
Not much else in there eh? no wonder Apple said they could sell these for cheaper if the market dictated. They're gonna make a killing on this thing.
What else were you expecting? Have you ever seen the inside of a MacBook? Take out the fans, battery, optical drive, and hard drive and you're left with a very small logic board, proportionally about the same as what's in the iPad.
The photo where everyone exclaims about how spacious it is, well, remember that the space could be filled with the backpane of the screen. It's really hard to tell if that is wasted space for future upgrades or merely a consequence of the teardown. Also the case is curved, so the usable space may be far less than you think. Weight and balance is a concern too...
All quite true, but that small gap in the deeper part of the case is also undoubtedly where the 3G hardware goes. It's not swimming in empty space by any stretch of the imagination.

The logic board is both taller and far wider than what's in the iPod touch. See the photo. This is about 1.5" by 5", plus a long extension arm in an L shape. The iPod logic board is about 1" by a little over 2"

iPad Internal Chips from the FCC Site ( a little magic to find them though....)

The FCC site had the chips covered.... gotta love acrobat image export though....

had a feeling the batteries were going to be huge and make up the space, I knew the board didnt need to be that much bigger than the iphones so...screen and batteries make up the rest

It's the fricken ambient light sensor.
It's the fricken ambient light sensor.
It's the fricken ambient light sensor.

and...
It's the fricken ambient light sensor.

One thing is clear there is plenty of room for a bigger Main Logic board.

That means it wouldn't be unreasonable to pester Apple for a lot more Flash Storage. The paltry amount of secondary storage is iPads most troublesome feature. Or feature lack if you will.

There is also plenty of room for an SD slot or USB port. Hey maybe REV B will be more appealing.

It isn't what I see that is interesting but the negative space, the open areas. That is a lot of void space inside the iPad... Future expansion.

Yes, but this teardown was the WiFi ONLY model. That space might be filled with the 3G radios on the 3G version. Well the radio chip won't take much space.and they use foil for the antenna, So the could squeeze a camera in there.

Do you quantify the value of hardware based on the amount of electronics inside?

agreed....that kind of logic is like: i spend ten minutes at my car mechanic(dentist, doctor, lawyer, etc.) and i get this bill for $250???
so that means (6 X 250 = $1500 an hour) I'm paying this schmuck $1500 an hour? i also can buy a whole chicken in the supermarket for $5.00 and this lousy restaurant is charging $18.00 for a dam chicken breast??
take a hint: go to a cheaper restaurant, do you own taxes/legal/medical work and build your own computer (or let dell do it)

It's not. It's not. etc.

If you look at the teardown, the ambient light sensor is clearly visible to the left of the center mount on the top bezel (shown top left in the "back of display" FCC photo).

The camera mount is still there, but it's probably still just as empty as it always has been.
Can anyone tell where the speakers are? I'm wondering what kind of sound it will produce?
You can see the dual speakers in several of the photos. They're the two round shapes in the plastic piece next to the lower (unlabeled) battery pack in the photos.

A nice thought but there ought to be a plug in connection for 3G / GPS.

Who thinks they can find USB pinouts (via the 30 pin at least) and solder them to a SD reader? Maybe the guts of the camera connection kit? Make all that internal? heh heh The hard part will be opening it, thats for sure.

unless of course Apple builds an entirely new main logic board for that feature. In any event you would think that a USB port would be the way to hook up GPS and the 3G modem.

Don't get me wrong as I like your idea very much and it would be a very worthwhile upgrade if a 32GB donge or SD card were used. The bigger problem would be accessing the extra Flash. Nothing I've seen indicates that the Camera kit gives the machine read write access to that flash. It is a question of drivers and APIs at this point. Still the thought of RTVing inplace a bunch more internal flash is a nice thought. I do hope it can be made to work.

By the way I'm fairly convinced that spare USB ports are available someplace on the board/processor. USB is the most common way to interface cameras in laptops for example. For this and other reasons I'm convinced that the A4 has spare ports.

This is why the service economy sucks. I'm fine with cooking for myself, doing my own taxes, building my own computer, and I've never needed any legal work I haven't been able to carry out myself. As for medical work, I'm glad for the technical service of doctors - I'm not going to operate on myself - but why wouldn't I investigate my own problems as much as I can?

An elective ten minute appointment with any doctor is pointless: if your appointment is only taking ten minutes, you're either making a habit of wasting your and your doctor's time on something trivial or the doctor's not spending enough time investigating the problem.

Ah right-o. I never realised the FCC didn't specify a unit.

I recently discovered an unknown allergy to a form of penicillin. It took my Dr. less than 10 minutes to diagnose and write a prescription. I'm not sure I would consider that a waste of either of our time. I get cured, he gets paid, and it doesn't take much time. Win-win in my book.

Back on topic - Wow! Look at those batteries.

why would the ambient light sensor be facing the same direction as the back of the display ? How about don't have a frontal frame shot so don't know.

Touch sensitive back?

Are those levels in the back connected to wires? It looks like few levels are. Is that for touch sensitive feature that will come with OS 4? That would be the biggest surprise. ):apple:
