The upgrade / firmware restore finally worked... 27 tries later. Restoring the backup now. Hopefully in another 15 minutes I'll be up and running again. Thanks to those on the board for shedding light on this one. Much appreciated.

Trying that now.

Shutting of firewall and virus protection. This computer should be completely open for now.

let's see if this works...

----------

Nice try, but still no luck. :(

...so, has anyone had any luck updating from this error?

I have been trying to update non-stop all day long and still cannot get it to update. Now, I'm thinking it's more than just an error in connecting with Apple.

sigh, this is getting quite frustrating.

I only get the option to "Restore" - back to original settings when I plug my iPad in now.

It has lost any data that was on the iPad and is only displaying the iTunes logo with the USB cable. iTunes detects that it needs to be restored to defaults but that is where I get stuck.

Hope your iPad 2 upgrade goes smoothly tonight.!

Same here for my 64gb iPad 1. Some BS because mine wasn't backed up to where it should be. I had a similar issue with my iP4, it told me I could disconnect, it didn't say it would screw up my install on my app's. Not cool. I'm not happy at all with this.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_5 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8L1 Safari/6533.18.5)

FIXED!!!

Ok, so here's my "fix".
I gave up. I've been trying to update it since last night. Tried it on 3 PC's. Different OS, USB ports, plugs, DFU, blah, blah, blah...

So I took it to the apple store. They had one guy just doing iOS updates. I told them my iPad was now a brick.

He hooks it up, places it in DFU and on the first try UPDATE SUCCESSFUL!!!

I don't know why, I don't know how, but he got it to work in the first try.

So, there's my "fix". Take it to Apple!

BACKUP BEFORE YOU GO! (assuming you could still back it up. Mine couldn't).

Good Luck!

Same as some of the others here, just kept trying and at some point last night it just worked!

Apple servers clearly can't cope with the number of iOS devices out there now all wanting to upgrade at the same time. I think they may spread the upgrade out next time!
