The difference is whether you want to unlock the iPhone or not. Upgrading to 3.1.2 still provides you ways to unlock the iPhone, however, as far as I know, 3.1.3's baseband will be trickier, or even impossible, to unlock.

In a nutshell, jailbreak can work up to 3.1.3, while unlock only up to 3.1.2.

If you just want to tether, but don't bother unlock. 3.1.3 should be ok for you. At least, that's what I do right now. Not a fan of AT&T, but not against it either.

I still have iPhone os 3.0 on my 3GS. Should I keep the os or update before I JB?

Those of you just jail breaking 3.1.3 not unlocking what the easiest way to do that? I used to ail break my gene 1 iPhone issuing the pwnage tool. Can that still be done with 3.1.3?

I used Pwnage tool 3.1.5 to jailbreak iPhone 3G running 3.1.3 with modem firmware level 5.12.01 It works great. Takes a few minutes.

I'm having no luck on my 3G or 3GS both are at 3.1.3, can somebody shoot me a link for jail breaking 3.1.3? google is not helping me

Just installed MyWi and running from my iPad now.
This is great!

So now does anyone know how much data use will set off a flag at AT&T?
I don't plan on doing mmuch more than normal surfing and YouTube and music on iPad when i'm not home. Is this a big data hog?

I am also concerned about the data usage
and how much can be done before placing
a red flag with AT&T.

I heard at&t technically has a cap of 5gb, but i know some people who went over and nothing happened.

5gb should be plenty, as long as you don't stream video too often.

and At&t doesn't usually do anything unless you go over it monthly

Thanks very much. Also is there any advantage to USB or Bluetooth tethering? Is it just tethering your MacBook to the iphone without wifi? I assume it uses less battery? Is it any faster? I just left Bluetooth and USB off for now.

Thanks again!

MyWi does work great! Yesterday I watched an entire episode of Modern Family on the ABC app via iPhone mywi tether :)

Just be careful with video streaming- I hear AT&T will flag you if you use more than 5GB per month data.....

All right all you smarties here....
I just got MyWi on my 3G and love it.

I know that OS 4.0 will disable jailbreak (no?) and therefore I won't upgrade. I will be updating my iPhone when the next version comes out.

So, can I get a new iPhone then, and then when I want to take advantage of MyWi, just pop out the sim and put it in my other iPhone?

Is it that easy to switch phones?

I don't think we will know until 4.0 comes out but I like the way you're thinking :D

I might do the same.

It's going to be interesting to see if ATT does anything at all. They approved the Slingplayer app on 3G and just in the few weeks of the NCAA bball tourney I streamed well over 8 gigs in those few days. I pretty much watched all day at work and while traveling. So far no email or warning and they can't really do anything as they approved the app.

Absolutly love MyWi with the iPad. It kills battery life on the iPhone 3gs though. It locked my iphone one time to the point that the ONLY fix was to restore, so Im 3.1.3 instead of 3.1.2 since iTunes no longer lets you restore to an older firmware, even with the Option + Restore trick. Even modified the host. Made a custom 3.1.3 to flash that doesn't touch the baseband so Im good. Working great now though. Love internet anywhere and I already pay for a data plan. Not going to buy two, even when my iPad 3G shows up. I just wanted the option and need the GPS chip.

Nice!

Can you report back and let us know how many minutes you can use the MyWi on a full charged iPhone? I would hate to do all this and find out it only lasts 20-30 minutes on a full charge.

Its much longer than that. I have a fresh jailbreak on 3.1.2. No backgrounder, no sbsettings, nothing except cydia and MyWi. Was in the park the other day browsing and watching the masters using MyWi and my iPad. Wasnt testing for this specifically but id say it went from 100% to 60% over about 45-1hr.

I have a 3GS which i have heavily used so my cycle count may be lower than some. Nonetheless, ill do a more formal test tonight and report back.

I just used it on my lunch break, I tethered for 45 minutes with the phone at 100% (I have a dock for it on my desk at work). I watched a couple of Youtube videos, did some surfing and after it was all said and done my iPhone was at 90%. Not bad if you ask me. 3GS (got it launch day) with only Cydia and standard Apple apps.

I have 3GS with version 3.1.3 (7E18) and the previous site says you need to have OLD boot rom to be able to jailbreak.. Where do I find my boot rom and what is the "old". Boot rom...? It says non MC Model.. My Model says MB717LL so Am I ok to Jailbreak?

4.0 has been jailbroken already so soon after 4.0 is released officially the jailbreaks will be released.

Here. Follow the instruction and enjoy. Now I am back to waiting for my 3g iPad.

pwnage app isn't working for me. Get to the part where it says to plug the iphone in and it will do the recovery mode stuff but never detects that it is plugged in. If you look at the most recent comments on this page http://www.iclarified.com/entry/comments.php?enid=5432&laid=33#commentsanchor you can see others are getting the same issue.

Does jailbreaking the iPhone still disable push notifications? Or has that issue been solved?

When was this an issue? I've had my iPhone jailbroken since push notifications came out and I've never had a problem getting them.
