Hi all,

Has anyone with the new MK experienced any issues in using the pass-through charging port?

I have tried three different USB-C cables and all result in ‘Not Charging’ being displayed next to the battery icon (See picture).

I have been on the phone to Apple Support for the last hour trying to explain this to them, it would appear to be a hardware issue and they are arranging collection of this one and dispatching a replacement upon receipt of the faulty unit.

Are you using third party cable or wall plug? Doesn’t seem the brick is powerful enough?

I have the same issue. 3rd party cable won’t charge through the port on the Magic Keyboard, but official cable will. Problem is, the Apple cables are not long enough. Any ideas if any 3rd party cables will work?

Hmmm, I’m using a third party cable and that’s working. Although I have serpate issues with mine (imperfections on the material of the palm rest).

I’ve tried charging with this Anker cable and the iPad charger from my old iPad Pro 10.5, and have had no issues:

Excellent, thank you. I think I just have a really old charger I guess.

I would go for the 2 Meter USB-C cable. That's 6ft of distance.

This does worry me slightly. I am using the 29W battery brick. hopefully that should do it.

Same issue here. I am using a new mophie USB-A to C cable bought at Apple online and my new iPad Pro 11” is not charging.

I have had positive success with the iPad Pro plug and the USB-C to USB-C cable that is supplied with it.

But no success with several Anker cable (MFI certified) and Anker Powerport plugs.

I expect it is software related.

No trouble charging with any of my 3rd party chargers and cables, but I have the 11” model. So maybe it’s a 12.9” issue with requiring more power?

I am using the 11” iPad Pro. No third party USB C cable (Anker, Mophie) charges the iPad via the keyboard connector. However charging the iPad directly works just as it should.

“Not Charging” does not mean it is not charging. In Apple parlance, it means it is not charging ”enough”. Keep an eye on the battery level if you just let it sit there off for a while. It could be charging but just slowly because it is defaulting to a safe rate or something along those lines.

I am using a UNI 10 foot USB C to USB C cable. Works great connected into the iPad. I started at 93% and its up to 98% after 30 minutes of heavy usage too. Seems like it charges fast using the apple 18w charger. Hope this helps.

The issue is not using the iPads charging plug, the issue is when connecting a third-party cable to the new magic keyboard

You are absolutely right, indeed it does charge but very slowly

I have a Anker PowerPort Atom PD 2 that I normally use with an Anker POwerline+ USB-C to USB-C to charge my iPad 12.9. When I plug the charger/cable into the Magic keyboard the iPad beeps and shows the charging icon, but after a few second stops and then beeps and shows charging again as if I was unplugging and plugging it back in. It will continuously do this until I unplug it. The PowerPort Is 60w so I don’t think its a power issue. When I use the stock iPad charger I don’t have this issue.

Yes, confirming there’s an Anker issue. I have the newest generation Powerline+ III USB-C cable with a PD2 adapter. Only periodic charging through the MK. I doubt this can be fixed by firmware/software on Apple’s side, so looks like I’m forced to return the Anker items.

The Nintendo Switch Type C Charger does NOT work on the Magic Keyboard. Which is stupid because it works on the iPad

The Switch Charger isn’t usb-c Pd compliant. If it works on anything but the switch, it’s just luck.

I am seeing a similar issue as well. When I plug my Anker PowerPort Atom PD 4 100W charger with a first-party USB-C cable into my Magic Keyboard pass-through port, the iPad constantly switches between charging and not charging state. If I switch over to the Apple 87W USB-C charger, the iPad charges just fine. Seems like an issue with third-party/Anker chargers.

Same with mine
