Just got off the phone with Apple, they told me I must use the apple cable plugged into the keyboard or it will charge the iPad. I went and dug out the iPad box to try the Apple cable and block and sure enough it worked. I always used Anker cables but the ones I have will not work.
PS: Apple even sent me a replacement keyboard because even they didn’t know why It wasn’t charging.

I took a gamble and purchased another charger off Amazon, and it works fine in the keyboard port.

I recently purchased an Anker charger and USB C cable and they work fine with my Magic Keyboard.

Hmmm, I’m using a third party cable and that’s working. Although I have serpate issues with mine (imperfections on the material of the palm rest).

Same here, no problem with several different Anker cables.

I am seeing a similar issue as well. When I plug my Anker PowerPort Atom PD 4 100W charger with a first-party USB-C cable into my Magic Keyboard pass-through port, the iPad constantly switches between charging and not charging state. If I switch over to the Apple 87W USB-C charger, the iPad charges just fine. Seems like an issue with third-party/Anker chargers.

Bet you're right. I have some Anger chargers that I'll try. My report about the Anker cable was using an Apple charger.

Slightly different issue.

Is the iPad supposed to charge when the case is closed and plugged in via the passthrough usb-c port?

I have an Anker charging cable and when I plug in, to either the iPad or a third party charger, it does charge, but when I unplug it, a spark flies, or I hear crackling near the end of the USB-C cable!! Very odd.

I suspect there is some grounding or other type of issue that causes a charge buildup. I thought maybe I misheard it or imagined it the first time, or perhaps it was a physical "crinkling" from the hinge - but I've done it maybe 3-4 times now, and I've heard the crackling each time, and seen a spark twice. Oddly, it actually happens at both ends of the USB-C cable - even after unplugging at the magic keyboard, if I unplug the other end of the cable, from the charger, I hear a similar sound. Maybe there are some very simple/small IC/circuits, near the ends of the cable that are building up charge somehow.

This scares me a bit, in terms of it damaging the iPad or keyboard, so I am only using the apple cable now - which works well and doesn't have the issue, with either the third party charger, or the Apple charger... it appears to be only cable related - very strange.

Same here too. Some of my 3rd party chargers which had no issues with the iPad’s built-in charging port don’t work with the Magic Keyboard’s pass-through charging port.

My Omars 45W PD battery pack is charging my 11” just fine using a Unisame USB-C cable. It’s charged 7% in 14 minutes.

I use a magnetic cable from AS connected to the USB port of a surge protector to the magic keyboard and it charges my 12.9 Pro just fine. I have a friend who is having issues with her MK not charging the iPad but it charges when plugged in directly to the iPad. I think she has a defective MK.

It seems the issue is fixed for me after updating to iPadOS 14.6, but I need a few more days to confirm it.

I was experiencing charging issues on my iPad Pro 11" when using the Magic Keyboard pass-thru charging port on iPadOS 14.5 with an Ugreen charger and an original Apple 2-meter USB-C cable.
