This is not earth-shattering news. There have been plenty of rumors regarding the iPad Mini 4 being an iPad Air 2 but shrunken down, so it only makes sense.

I'm glad to see the get so much attention. I just hope the Air 3 isn't skimmed over this year. :(
Given that the Air 3 is really a high end product, I don't know how much more they could add to it. If they do a full "up to par" upgrade on the Air, I really hope they don't ignore the Mini. It's not really fair that they offer such a great Air and poor Mini at the same price ratios as they were before. The only logic I could see is that they wanted people to wait for the next mini.

The difference between the Air and Mini should only be size, IMO.

I would wait for this iPad mini arrive and see if there is something interesting.

Apple can drop sketch for new notes app on iPad mini 1 for apparently no reason. Don't expect Apple will throw split view on iPad mini 3. Apple is also an evil company.

I'm not sure if that has to be the case. Unless I'm missing something, the presence of Split View on only the iPad Air 2 just means that the iPad Air's specs as a whole do not meet the requirements for Split View. For example, if 2 GB of RAM is a requirement, then the iPad Air wouldn't support Split View no matter how powerful its CPU (and it might be the case that a hypothetical A7 iPad with 2 GB RAM supports Split View). So I don't think the iPad mini 4's specs necessarily have to be ≥ the iPad Air 2's specs.

EDIT: Streamlined my explanation.

Here's my guess: if the iPad mini 4 supports Split View, then a September 9th announcement for the iPad mini 4 would allow Apple to say that both the iPad Air and the (new) iPad mini support Split View in time for iOS 9's release.
Great point!!!

I can't wait to buy the iPad mini 4! Does anyone know why the rumors are saying it's going to be announced on Sep 9 with the iPhone and AppleTV (possibly)? Seems like so much for one keynote. Usually it's iPhone Sep, iPad Oct/Nov.
iPhone has to have its own keynote/announcement. Otherwise the other products will risk detracting attention away from the iPhone 6S hype.

This would have excited me 2 years ago. My iPad2 sits on a shelf unused. My N7 rarely leaves my bag. I even found my iPad original in a box in the garage (STILL WORKS, albeit a little slowly). Sadly, tablets don't do it for me anymore. I do want a Skylake mac mini though... unless it's crippled like the last "update". I'm offering you my money Apple, eff it up.
I have sold each of my old devices when I upgrade to new ones. Sold: iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPad 2, iPad 3; gave away MBP 13" (2011) to a friend. Have an old 2009 iMac which I have replaced but haven't decided what to do with yet. Too much trouble to sell, and probably a decent backup machine. Re my next upgrade - I think I would much rather have a new MacBook than a new iPad. My current iPad Air (1) is adequate for what I use it for - mostly web, email, and reading. Since I usually buy the cellular iPads (64GB), the price for a MB isn't that much more (obviously, no cellular option; but I can hotspot it to my iPhone 6 Plus when out and about) - and once the price drops a bit, that is probably my next purchase. I'm very curious to see what the next Core M processor improvements will yield. But, I don't think we'll see them (whatever they may be) in market until late 2016, maybe later.

It's like the bending iphones, they are not bending according to Apple, but they are going to make the iPhone 6S bend-proof...

It's cute you think they will be "bend-proof", but they will still bend. Just like HTC, Samsung and Nokia phones bend too - some with more force, some with less.

Like all revised products some features will get upgraded. Like between the 5 and the 5s they moved some internal screw holes - that didn't make the 5s 'bend-proof'.

and like 8GB and 16GB phones already were too small since 2010.

I'd love to agree with you. But it depends on the user.

- For my personal phone 16GB has been too small for years (currently on a 64GB 6, looking at a 128 model for the next upgrade).
- For my work issued 5c for 8GB is more than enough (we don't install many apps or take pictures and video on these handsets).

I have no idea what number of phones Apple sells to corporate users. Maybe they should only sell 8/16Gb to corporate users. And for the consumer up the minimum to 32GB.

Even then though I'm hesitant, I know a lot of regular users who get on just fine with 16GB. But without the data (which I'm sure Apple has) we can't just say 'everyone' needs more than 16GB.

And the iPad Mini 3, asking a 100 bucks for Touch ID only.

Nope.

2013 iPad Mini 2 was launched at $399.
2014 iPad Mini 3 was launched at $399 (Mini 2 reduced to $299).

Exactly the same price. They didn't ask $100 for adding Touch ID, they gave you Touch ID for the same price as the earlier model. They gave you $100 off if you didn't want Touch ID.

And even after this some sheeps are defending Apple's choices like it's a God. Apple isn't God. Apple isn't perfect. Yet, My next phone will be an iPhone.

I can't remember anyone saying saying Apple is perfect, not even on this forum.

Not seeing here it, split view just to get a new iPad.... Except maybe viewing side by side, but it makes comparing easy or have two apps side by side to copy info across. it's just a smaller view.... which drowns out the fact of why u have full screen apps in the first place.....

Users want the bigger screens.... u can already switch apps, full screen

Picture in picture, leave that for the bigger TV screen, where "i have no idea why* but u would watch Twitter AND something else in another overlapping window at the same time. If u need to constantly move something, its in your way

On a smaller display like the iPad, will just make this more irritating.

Although your post holds some merit and I agree with it, I really resent that people prefer to keep calling each other names on this forum such as Fanbois, Sheep or KoolAid Drinkers. It doesn't add anything in terms of credibility to your posts that you do this.

Did you never come across *LTD* (now banned), the most prolific Apple Worshipper alive? Most people on this forum can actually differentiate, but he (or she) was more convinced of Apple products than Jobs and Cook.

edit: changed TLD to *LTD*

So an iPad Mini will be able to support split screen, but my freaking $1,000 iPad Air that's less than 2 1/2 yrs old can't? What a crock of s. Sorry Apple but I'm not playing your game, if you gimp my iPad Air, I'm NOT buying your new iPad. I'll either get a 128 Surface or a cheap Macbook (but I probably wouldn't get that because I loathe rewarding bad/sleazy behavior).

I want to hear about a revolutionary new iPad Air 3.

Unfortunately , revolutionary here has to do more with software than hardware. The current OS was built for a smartphone back in 2007, I guess it can't be scaled to be used as a serious working tablet OS. My opinion is Apple should come up with a new OS

1 GB RAM the last years was an absolute d*ck move. Apple knew long before iOS 9 that they would implent split view, but they decided to keep on to 1 GB RAM wasn't enough since iOS 7. It's like the bending iphones, they are not bending according to Apple, but they are going to make the iPhone 6S bend-proof... and like 8GB and 16GB phones already were too small since 2010. I agree that the 1GB of Ram last year was ****** move but I don't agree about the mythical bendgate and don't care of you would call me sheep or whatever. Just because Apple decided to enhance the durability of the newer version (to avoid having idiots walking into the Apple store testing their muscle powers on bending phones) it doesn't meant there was a real issue to start with. On the real life never heard or seen anyone with bend iPhones
