I wouldn't mind a mini 5 with pen support, it would be a terrific portable digital sketch/notebook! Easy to carry, even in a jacket pocket. Can doodle on documents etc and do heavier work on a computer or larger iPad when you're stationary.
I basically want an updated mini to have an easy sketchpad for work and seminars in order to easily scribble on pdfs and to later access the same pdfs on my laptop.

Apple is clearly not putting the energy into the iPad mini line that they did in years past.

I don't know... They put zero effort into it during the year of the Mini 3, where all they did was add TouchID and call it a new model, but then followed up with a significant upgrade in the following year with the mini 4.

with all the speculation that Apple is gonna release a 10.5 iPad and No real news on what the iPad Mini could have I was thinking is there any possibility Apple kills off the iPad Mini ?

They may eventually kill it off when something better can replace it. There's nothing better at the moment.

Since people tend to hold onto iPads longer than iPhone I think Apple is moving to a model where they will be updating the iPad models less frequently (1.5-2 years), but I suspect that the mini is still popular enough that they won't abandon it completely. I'd expect a revamped iPad lineup in the spring which will probably include a new mini.

I really hope not. I adore my iPad Mini for watching video like Netflix and YouTube when I'm doing things around the house. It's a first gen so it's getting pretty slow and it constantly reloads pages in Safari but it still plays video like a champ.

I don't think so. The Mini may never been the flagship of the iPad line or sport the best specs, but my understanding is that they sell pretty well. I'm a fan of the form factor myself.
My feeling as well is that it will continue to get last generation CPU but that it will continue to be supported. It makes sense if you don't own the Plus sized phone. And with the SE selling as well as it is selling and the regular sized phone selling better than the Plus, many hundreds of millions of people fall into that category. Continuing to design for the iPad Mini just doesn't seem like it would be that hard to develop and support.

Yeah, and to be honest, I don't mind if its processor is a generation behind the larger iPads. Some people complained that the Mini 4 got an A8 chip instead of an A8X or A9, but you have to remember that a smaller form may present some technical limitations compared to the bigger iPads, and they want to keep the price down to make it a more appealing entry level option.

I think it is price difference and also a vehicle to put the older chips into after they are no longer in the flagship iPhone. So I think the mini iPad and the Apple TV is always going to be one generation behind the iPhone. Apple likes to get a couple of years out of the chips it works so hard to develop. This would be another way to do it. And since the chip is running a smaller screen, it may get better performance. But since iPad Mini's have much more room than an iPhone, I don't think the technical challenges are particularly hard.

hope not. i cant see it. besides, what will they fill the gap with? they'll have a gaping hole in their ipad size line up.

i'm wanting to purchase a mini soon, so waiting to see if a new mini is in the offing. if not, a mini 4 it'll be.
trouble is, the regular ipad size is just way too big compared to the mini. and there is nothing else.

I was thinking specifically about why the Mini 4 got a dual-core A8 instead of the tri-core A8X.

I think that the latter might have been a bit energy demanding for a smaller device with a smaller battery. Notice that no iPhone ever had an A8X.

I have no issue getting last gen's processor. I'm much more concerned with the RAM, and the iPad mini 4 did not disappoint in this regard.

The size of the screen doesn't really matter as far as performance goes. It's the resolution that counts.

The current iPad Mini is running a lower resolution screen than the iPad Pro 9 and 12. So it should get better performance on that screen. I'm not sure if they will increase resolution even in a refresh as that resolution is already significant for a relatively small screen.

If a refresh got:
  • Wide color display (P3)
  • True Tone display
And the A9x CPU, that would be very nice.

But my Mini buying days are probably done for now. I'm going to get an iPad Pro with pencil support as my next iPad. Haven't decided on if it will be the 12 or the 9 yet though.

Actually, only the 12.9" Pro has a higher resolution. But because of the smaller display the Mini has higher pixel density than all of them.
