The longer I own the mini 5 the more its design bothers me. I didn't think it would, but it surely does. I expect I have become accustomed to narrow bezels on TVs, computer monitors and other tablets. I am staring at Dell UltraSharp monitors with their elegant understated design for many hours virtually every single day. I suppose it is bound to have a significant influence.

With very small bezels, it could become very hard to hold the mini without constantly instigating unwanted input all the time. The bezels could be a few mm smaller right now. Anything much more can ruin the user experience.

I can understand that argument. I can also well remember Steve Jobs telling us that we could never expect an iPod with a colour screen for what seemed liked an equally logical reason.
 
Some of you should think of the mini 5 as the mini pro...heck the mini 4 had a A8 processor and no Pencil support...You skipped 4 generations of cpu/gpu technology with the A12, got additional ram, kept a headphone jack and received pencil support and some complain it's not pro enough due to the design; nothing was ever wrong with this design and it saves money for a change....🙄🙄🙄🙄

That would be $0. iPad mini 4 (A8/2GB) was released in 2015 for $399 when the Air 2 (A8X/2GB) dropped in price to $399.

The mini 4 has the A8. However I agree its a good update.

In US maybe, in Europe i’m sure that the price difference was 100-150 euros, which at the time was almost literally 100-150$. I remember it very clear because i was deciding if i should keep using minis (i had the mini 2) and save some money or “upgrade” to air2 increasing the size but it will cost me a lot more.
 
I've been using the Mini as a notebook a work all week and got to say that I love it. I no longer have random sticky's and sheets everywhere. Also, although I love Face ID on my phone, I'm really appreciating Touch ID on the Mini. If the Mini had Face ID, I would have to lift the iPad up every time to unlock it or reach my face over the mini which can be awkward. If the Mini had Face ID, I could disable it and have the screen always unlocked at work, but I would forgot to add it back after work.

I love the new Mini. It has everything I want with the exception of the rear camera. They could have made at least a slight upgrade. I don't care about the new design and actually prefer the older design with Touch ID. This one has 3GB RAM, second gen Touch ID, 7MP front camera, gigabit LTE, A12, fast charging, and 256GB storage among other things.

This Mini is the first iPad to be on par with the larger iPad while also carrying the same colour gamut. The Mini 2/3 in particular was known to have crappy colour gamut which I notice really easily.

I’m glad you enjoy it so much, as do I. I don’t mind the rear camera so much, as I’ll take my phone out for that.

The camera wasn't upgraded because they didn't want a bump on the back. If I had to nitpick I would say they should have updated the Apple Pencil to the current version but you can't have everything. Even if they didn't want to make the case flat it would have been a great time to introduce a new dongle LOL. As a whole it's much better than I expected. I was expecting A10 and a cheaper screen. I'm currently using the 4th gen mini but this is on the list to buy.

Didn’t the iPhone SE have a 12MP without the whole protruding camera thing though? Guess the 8MP also kept costs down from the perspective that the Air, Entry Level iPad and the Mini would then all share the same tech.

Using a new (and old) mini - I don't see a problem with smaller bezels. I think this dimension of a tablet is perfect for the pro treatment - I usually palm the mini in one hand and use my finger or pencil in the other. When palmed, I can still easily see all the screen and all the bezel-ness, so reducing those bezels to be a pro is a good move, IMO.

Bring on the iPad Mini Pro...

I was actually just about to opt for the 10.5 Pro before they released the mini 5, so I'm glad they released it before I went through with the original purchase.

You're right. It's probably to keep costs down. There are a lot of compromises to everything. It doesn't have a 120 Hz display either. I think the iPad mini is more marketed at businesses and of course it's unlikely they would care if the camera was 12 MP. I know a vendor that sets up displays. He uses a Samsung tablet and the only thing he uses the camera for is to confirm the display is correct. I'm still debating on upgrading to the new mini but my 4th gen still works perfectly so at the moment the cost is hard to justify. That's a big problem with Apple due to the lifespan of their devices many people don't upgrade. The only time I've upgraded iPhones is when I damaged my old one. My iPad stays home most of the time so it's unlikely it will get damaged.

Get a glass screen protector and have it installed at the Apple store if you're not good at this. IMO a screen protector is a must for any touch screen device. In a perfect world our fingers and screens are free from dust and screens never get scratched. In the real world scratches happen so there's a reason screen protectors are made.

Does anyone have suggestions for a good iPad Mini 5 case? I like the thin Apple smart cover/smart case design, but they don't seem to make the smart case for the mini anymore and I'm nervous about only using a front case when the device is still in my bag.

Most of the cases I can find seem to be folio-style cases which are a little bulkier than I'm keen on.
