All of these issues could've been avoided if they gave the iPad mini a proper mini led display and 120hz, instead we got a price bump, and the same crappy Retina display that has been around for years.
If they did all that, the ipad mini would cost $700 and be an “ipad mini pro”, therefore no longer being a smaller ipad air/mid-range device like it’s been for years.

Most people would not buy it at that price—though a small minority of us might. I wish apple gave us options for the mini and had a mini equivalent of each tier of ipad instead of just the one at mid-range. That would solve all our problems, but it simply won’t happen.

HDTV Test explains why it is happening:

Essentially, it is the location of the TCON (Timing Controller) on the right side instead of at the top like on earlier models.

And if you scroll slower, you don't see it. It is most-pronounced when you are "speed flicking" content.

It's most pronounced when you make a video of the iPad screen, say at 240 fps to 1,000 fps, and then play it back as slow motion. Which all of the reviewers/complainers seem to do.

Of course that's something that everyone does all the time when using their iPad to read a story, right?

Jeeeeeez.

Yeah, most wouldn’t, but I’d jump all over that!!!

Also, wasn’t there just an article that Tim doesn’t want Apple products to be used for doom scrolling? Maybe the jelly effect is new negative feedback to prevent such beavior. 😹

Watch this be fixed in iPad Mini 7. I highly recommend owners of the Mini 6 to get Applecare plus, coming from someone who was burnt by bright spots on the 2017 iPad Pro 12.9 2 years after purchase due to a design flaw. The screen is the weak link of this Mini 6 and it’s not safe to be without warranty a year after purchase.

It's criminal that apple gave the mini a price bump this year, with hardly any improvements apart from a redesign.

Still using the same old dated display from years ago. felt like throwing up, when they were raving on about the Retina display during the event. 🤦‍♂️😂

5G. Wifi 6. USB-C. 1GB more RAM. Apple Pencil 2 support. Larger screen smaller size. Better camera, including 4K/60 video.

Hardly any improvements?

The iPad Mini's controller board is along the long edge because that is where it can fit so that moved the TCON controller to the side and the display is now being refreshed from left to right instead of top to bottom. This is likely why it is more obvious on the Mini than the iPad or iPad Air, which do "jelly scroll" from top to bottom.

As an aside, the iPad Pro also has it's TCON on the side and it also refreshes the same way as the Mini does, but the 120Hz refresh rate of ProMotion helps cancel out the effect (and the larger display probably helps, as well, since your eyes cannot focus on as much of the screen at one time as on the smaller Mini).

I expect the "fix" for this will be when ProMotion comes to the Mini.

I used to think I wouldn't, but I do now, and I am by no stretch of the imagination a "pro" user of ipads. I just want better and more because I have an awful combination of both ****** and sensitive eyesight, so a higher refresh rate would help with that 😹. Sure, I'm used to 60hz on my iphone, but a) there's no scan-skew in portrait mode, b) I'm going to get an iphone with promotion next go around, and c) it matters even more on a bigger screen.

Means nothing if the main thing that you look at 24/7 is still garbage. 🤦‍♂️😢
C'mon, no need to be hyperbolic. "Garbage" is too far. A better word would be subpar but frankly, it's good enough for most people. It's really just a smaller ipad air, arguably to a fault.

Following complaints of "jelly scrolling" on the iPad mini 6 display, another issue has gained traction online that also has to do with the device's 8.3-inch Liquid Retina LCD panel.

iPad-mini-6-orange-BG.jpg

A poster on Reddit brought attention to a discoloration and distortion issue that they were having when touching the screen with the iPad in portrait orientation.
The Redditor claims they received a replacement from Apple, except the new device had the same problem, "but worse." While a handful of users replied to the original poster saying they were experiencing a similar issue – although for one or two, it was reportedly evident in another part of the display – most users who engaged with the post were unable to replicate it on their own device.

For what it's worth, MacRumors was unable to reproduce a similar distortion effect around the area suggested in the top-right corner of the iPad mini's screen. It is possible to create distortion where the finger makes contact anywhere on the display, but only by exerting unwarranted pressure. But then the same effect is demonstrable on any LCD panel when applying undue pressure, so we were unconvinced that what we were seeing was evidence of a mass defect with the panel in the iPad mini 6.

Users seeing a similar issue as to the one demonstrated in the above video have the option of taking their iPad mini 6 to an Apple Store or Repair Center to ask for a replacement unit.

As for the jelly scrolling issue, Apple has said that the effect is normal behavior for an LCD screen, and that likely means the company does not plan to offer replacements for users who are seeing this issue. For that reason, those unhappy with the ‌iPad mini‌'s display should make sure to return the tablet within its 14 day return window.

I’ve had the new mini for about 3 days now. I Haven’t personally owned a iPad in over 5 years. ive always liked the mini size, and the new screen size is very nice. It’s a wonderful DPI, and I have to say It’s been an absolute pleasure. Incredibly responsive and easy to read text and comic books.

I haven’t noticed any discomfort scrolling in either landscape or portrait layout.

I haven’t recovered my screen in slow motion. So I have t actively tried to find the issue.

I’m really glad I decided to try it out, after reading some of the hysterical comments I almost didn’t.

Not sure if it’s affecting a small number of new iPad mini’s or if it’s just the results of hyper focusing on a perceived issue. Either way find it funny lots of negative comments are from people who don’t even own a new iPad minI.

"except for the things that don't matter to me that Apple improved on, there is very little improvement". ;)

I'm baffled as to why so many feel personally offended if people don't agree that the issues are as serious as they believe they are.

"Garbage" is an incendiary word.

Thanks for the heads up. Appreciate it because I'm about to purchase a Mini.

What I find hilarious is all of the videos claiming it's a problem show the screen being recorded at 240 to 1,000 frames per second, and then played back in slow motion! And nobody gets what's going on! Astonishing.

Doing the same thing video recording someone speaking or chewing food would be similarly hilarious!

So unlike the Jelly, which is on all Mini 6's -- this perhaps could just be manufacturing issues it sounds like?

Good idea to wait a bit if anyone is going Mini 6 it sounds like -- hopefully this all gets ironed out.

the only problem I have seen with my new iPad Mini is one flawed pixel that Is visible on a white screen. I can live with that!

It certainly seems like they did. People were clamoring for the Air/Pro-like design to come to the Mini. I warned them that Apple would have to significantly increase the price by at least $100 (and possibly as much as $200). The $100 increase got the basement-level treatment. The full high quality approach would've been a $200 increase but then only a fraction of those buying at the $100 increase would've sprung for the Mini.

The Mini has traditionally "felt" more expensive than it should be... but for those of us who are fans of the Mini (Mini 5 is the end of the line for me) the best and true way to discover the value is to actually use it.

Just how many of those complaining about the current Mini 6 would be willing to pay $599 for a base Mini 6 that didn't have jelly scrolling, ProMotion, FaceID, and higher quality screen?
I’m in.
