I’ve been using the mini 6 for 3 years. I can’t see the jelly roll, and I’ve tried really !
Me too. But I use the mini the most in landscape. Perhaps that’s the reason. Great form function factor in this size.

“ In the most recent episode of the Six Colors Podcast…”

Back in June, I referenced Apple’s six colors in regard to a new multicolor Lock Screen customization and the comment was removed by a moderator with the note that I should “avoid making posts that are about political, religious, or social issues.”

So is it okay to assume the same action will be taken here? This podcast mention seems, on that same basis, highly inappropriate, and I am offended personally and on behalf of other readers. Please redact, thank you! 😊

To some, just like with science, Apple has become a stand-in for religion? I’ve got nothing

Most likely the moderator didn’t know about sixcolors.com and thought it was an LBGTxyzetc site.

for that commenter and for the mod I assume it’s an age thing. Who doesn’t know Jason Snell, he’s kind of a big deal in Apple circles. He’s a silly Walt Mossberg

It’s really not talked about here, but the Apple Watch Ultra (at least the original) also had jelly scrolling. It really bothered me when I first got it, and went to the Apple Store to return it and noticed all the display watches had the same issue. To me it’s quite noticeable and something I never noticed on the series watches I’ve had.

I suspect Apple Watch Ultra had the same issue as the mini, although I don’t understand why they wouldn’t rotate the display assembly on that since there’s no “landscape” use there.

I noticed and thought I was crazy! Well, maybe I’m still crazy but this confirmation makes me feel a little better. Ok back to being crazy…

People are different. I never, ever use my iPad Mini in portrait. If I download an app or game that is portrait only, I delete it instantly.
yes people are different. my first mini was the 2.5 ( i'm still using it occasionally for reading and some very old games). I now use the mini 5 exclusively for hours daily, mostly for reading books and surfing. my air is gathering dust but what I wanted to say is that i don't remember the last time I used it in landscape. it certainly was years ago (or maybe never).
so if you don't play games or watch videos then portrait is the best choice.

How does this cause eyestrain? Doesn’t it only occur when scrolling? How many people are trying to read while scrolling? I get a headache doing that even on my 120Hz IPP, not because of a jelly effect but because the text is blurry while scrolling (despite the refresh rate). So I scroll then read. I’d guess most do the same with the mini.

Apple definitely covers itself often, like every company, but I can’t agree that this is one of those times. Every display produces various artifacts in the right real-world circumstances — even ultra-expensive pro-grade monitors. This is why technical reviews will measure for a range of artifacts, distortions, inaccuracies, etc. and report on them. People can then compare and pick the model that performs best in their use-cases. But one’s choice is always a compromise because no model is perfect.

Rarely, a particular spec or measurement is rendered effectively meaningless because tech has advanced to the point where there’s no longer noticeable differentiation around that spec, at which point, reporting on it will slow. The last time I recall this happening is with contrast on OLED displays, since their pixel-level true black results in silly measurements that are tied to the limits of the measuring instrument.

I don’t doubt for a second that some people very much see the effect and are bothered by it. That doesn’t change the fact it’s still just a side-effect of the display tech that most people won’t notice — even, as this thread shows, when they actively try to notice. Thus, I can’t call this a defect in build nor design; it’s just a performance spec like any other, like, say, the edge distortion on the wide-angle lense. Even if Apple adjusted things in the 7 to be better and bragged about it, that doesn’t mean the 6 was flawed in the sense of legal (or ethical) culpability, nor that Apple had anything to “admit” to. It just means the 7 is an improvement in that respect.

I’m not sure I’d even mind if the problem was moved into the landscape orientation. I never use the mini in landscape (unless I’m watching video).

Honest question: Why would they fix something they called normal behaviour?

Why? Because in design that is what one does. Continually try to improve on earlier versions. Improving version 7 is not a denigration of version 6, it is ongoing improvement, a very good thing.

No arguments there. I was simply making the argument that it is false to say the Mini is only useful in portrait. I do use it for surfing, in landscape. I just prefer holding it that way. As I said, people are different.

My iPhone (also Mini) is the opposite by the way - I use it exclusively in portrait, and if an app or game is landscape only, I don’t use it on my phone.

For some reason, Apple's 120Hz isn't as smooth as Samsung's 120Hz. I've got both and can definitively say the Samsung screen (S24+) will scroll smoother (and looks better in use).

Waiting on real-world reviews before I consider ordering. I got burnt pre-ordering iPad Mini 6 and I couldn't tolerate the jelly scroll which was evident out of the box (and yes, I saw it for myself without others pointing it out on the Internet).

I hope it's fixed as I'd love this smaller iPad.

Same here - I hope they come soon.

Guess we need to wait for someone like from New Zealand on the other side of the timeline to get the info a day early.
Available starting 23.10.
From NZ$949
Apple always does it this way, we depend on the earliest hardware critiques from certain countries before even Cupertino locals see it in person. ;)

Don’t they usually send units out to bloggers a little earlier? Unless this is too low key, was hoping to see something by now.

And a masterclass in avoiding lawsuits! But if they only rotated it, they move the jelly scrolling to the other orientation. I hope they didn’t do that I really hope they weren’t that stupid
Why haven’t there been lots of complaints about jelly scrolling using the older large iPads in landscape mode then? Or the earlier Minis?

Perhaps the shorter vertical makes it a non-issue?
