Waiting for Apple's announcements coming soon. iPad mini to be one? I don't understand what the advantage would be to grab a mini over the regular iPad? Is it cost alone?

None. It's just a rumor.

----------

Lots of good ideas and comments. Thanks people. Now I have the really difficult decision--it WAS iPad, now I am not sure

A decision? You do understand that Apple has not announced a mini? It's simply a rumor.

Well, making a decision to wait based on a rumour is a decision, isn't it? :D

If you don't need a specific product right now, and there is an alternative, albeit rumoured, product that is tempting enough, it boils down to how likely one finds the rumour to be true and what the consequences of waiting a bit would be.

Mistaking rumours for facts is one thing, gambling on rumours to be true when you really don't have anything to lose is something completely different...

Restating my intentions:
Although I HAD previously decided to purchase a 'regular' iPad, I am now considering the possibility that an iPad mini will be offered this fall and so the decision on what my next Apple purchase will be is something I will have to make a decision about, based upon the offerings of Apple, of course.

For me, the main benefit would be price if I was comparing the two models.

I personally don't find a mid-sized, non-pocketable form factor very beneficial. I like reading magazines, viewing photos, and navigating on a larger screen. I usually find a way to rest the larger iPad on something if I want to hold it with one hand.

Because of the smaller size, I would be less likely to hold it that far away (far enough away to rest it on something), so I would probably need to actually hold it closer to my face and carry the entire weight the whole time (this is just a guess based on using smaller devices like the Kindle Keyboard and iPhone).

I do see a benefit for women that carry purses large enough to hold a mini iPad, but not enough room for a regular iPad. However, that had no real benefit for me. I would need to hand carry it or toss it in a bag, which I can do with the regular iPad.

I have to read a lot of pdf documents and I think the actual size of the iPad is perfect .
A smaller size would not be a good idea for what I need.

Yep, try reading a book or other PDF file (contract, etc) on a 7" inch screen as opposed to the current iPad 9.7 inch screen? No thanks.....

I have the original iPad but bought a Blackberry Playbook because of the size, however i have just got a MacBook Air and thats kind of replaced my ipad so a mini ipad to replace my buggy as hell playbook would be lovely

And that's why the Kindle app will adapt to any size screen, letting you adjust font size. I read books on my iPad, my TouchPad, and my phone, all with ease.

wow, you've got some big hands! seriously, I doubt anyone would be expecting the mini to be so small as to allow one-handed use. that's what the ipod touch is for.

:) Fair point, what I really meant was that it ought to be easier to hold with one hand for prolonged use. Didn’t mean holding and manipulating the touchscreen with a single hand.

.

And if the 16g entry level wifi only model is $349, would that price make it attractive to you?

You can probably price the device by comparing the iPod touch with the iPad and picking a middle ground.

It's not going to be $199, and likely won't be $299 as an 8g tablet is unlikely.

I've been thinking of replacing my original iPad which my son mostly uses. Would definitely be a better size for him to use.

$349 for 16GB would be about the limit. $299 would be better :)

I see no advantage for me, none whatsoever but I will still buy one as soon as it's available. It will sit nicely next to my iPad 2 and my iPad 3! :D

Jesus, if you need something that's smaller, easier to hold in one hand, and that fits in your purse, there's already a product for you - it's called the iPhone! Hell, even an iPod Touch!

The iPad mini is the stupidest idea I've ever seen given so much attention. It's farce. It's the idea of a twelve year old fanboy with no logic, that doesn't understand Apple whatsoever. Can you seriously see a big enough gap in the market to warrant THREE iOS devices at different sizes? Ridiculous! And imagine the ball ache it will present to app developers.

Not, going, to happen. Get over it people.

I'm thinking that there will be just a 16GB model released at a price of $299.

You have a point but I would still pay 399 for better specs.

$299 for a 1024x768 res, A5 chip, 8GB and 512RAM is VERY unattractive to me :( sadly I see this more of a reality now

Edit: and a poxy vga front facing cam. oh and no Siri.

If they brought the mini out at the same price of the iPad (3), I don't think it would be very successful. While many are saying the size is better, I don't think very many people would pick it over the larger iPad at the same price point (assuming they could only chose one of them).

Therefore, I think price is an important element of its success. I think a model at $249/$299 would get people in the stores and they could work on getting them to spend more (for more memory) at that point.

Personally, I have an iPad and see no reason at all to buy the mini. As I mentioned, neither are pocketable and I think most apps are better on a larger screen.

You are SO wrong. Its going to happen, believe it. The 7" tablet at a reasonable price point and powerful is THE sweet spot. When the ipad was introduced at 10 inches it was then the sweet spot. By now its become like an old fashion laptop in terms of being too heavy and cumbersome to be portable. Seems strange but true. Times and fashion changes, dude. Apple is certainly going to jump into the fast growing and very popular mini tablet market. I have an ipad3 and love it but its a hummer compared to my mini cooper nexus 7.

I was going to order the iPad 3 white today and saw this thread about a smaller iPad. My parents having the iPad 2, using it I find it often to heavy. Some questions:

1. Can someone sum up the rumors about the iPad mini for me? How high are the chances for iPad mini being announced on September 12th?
2. I would use the iPad for surfing, reading ebooks & newspapers, some small apps, card games and perhaps some movies. Do you think with iCloud the 16 GB version of iPad 3/mini would be enough?
3. Is it possible to redownload movies from iTunes now? My parents bought about ten movies for their iPad, I always thought they can't redownload them and have to backup them on their PC.

7.85" would be absolutely perfect for e-books.

agree- this is the reason i have stayed away from the current slew of smaller tablets. 7 is too small, but just under 8" should be about right.
Weight and thickness plays a role as well.

Take the itouch- enlarge to 7.85" - done.

For girls, fits in their purses better.
Not cost alone, still a luxury item. $300vs$400 iPad... not that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things.

iPad 2 heavy? See a PT.

1. 9/12? Very unlikely.
2. iCloud vs. local storage is irrelevant. Cloud is used for backups, and syncronizing data. Not for overflow storage.
3. Some movies, depending on agency agreements with Apple.
